The chamber exploded in a deafening shockwave as the First Ruin shrieked, the sound converting into a kinetic wall that slammed Mei straight into a stone pillar.

Shattered obsidian rained around her. Ash filled her lungs. The ceiling groaned—the entire structure was caving in, not to escape, but to bury her alive.

A black tendril shot from the dust, punching through the flagstones where her skull had rested a fraction of a second prior. Rolling, Mei drew her dagger and severed the whip with a single backhand strike. The severed stump writhed, bubbled, and regenerated instantly.

Damn it.

She sprinted. The walls blew outward as the creature tore through the foundation. Another tendril raked across her chest, searing white-hot pain through her veins. Blood soaked her sleeve, but she kept moving, diving through a opening just as the roof caved in.

Then, the world shattered into a hallucination.

Black skies raining fire. Blaze Headquarters reduced to cinder. Joshua bleeding out in the mud. Fei screaming. Her own rotting corpse dangling from a tower of black glass.

Mei stumbled, her mind reeling under the psychic assault. Not real. It’s not real.

A phantom of Joshua reached out, weeping. She didn't hesitate—she drove her dagger straight through his chest.

The illusion dissolved into static. The creature recoiled, its multi-faceted eyes wide with a frantic, desperate fear.

It’s not trying to kill me, Mei realized, her vision clearing. It’s hiding.

It lunged. Mei ducked beneath a sweeping claw that pulverized the stone behind her, drove an elbow into its ribs, and rolled. The floor gave way. She dropped into the dark, her fingers catching the ragged lip of the chasm at the last second.

Beneath her boots hung a void of writhing, apocalyptic memories. Above her, the monster stepped up to end it.

That’s when she saw it.

Buried deep beneath the swirling psychic noise was a single, humming thread of raw silver. Every illusion, every tendril, every fragment of this dying world was tied directly to it. The core. The foundation.

Mei grinned, blood staining her teeth. "There you are."

"STOP!" the creature screeched, its voice echoing with the agony of a dying world.

Mei hoisted herself over the ledge and charged the thread. The monster lashed out—one claw grazed her ribs, launching her into the back wall with a bone-crunching impact. Coughing up crimson, she dragged herself forward, her arm outstretched.

She grabbed the silver thread.

Agony detonated behind her eyes. Billions of lives, deaths, empires, and extinction events flooded her consciousness at once. Her knees hit the deck. Blood gushed from her nose as her skin turned translucent, silver light pulsing through her veins like poison. The Archive was consuming her, digitizing her soul into its horrific record.

Remember us, a million voices whispered inside her skull. Become us.

Her legs dissolved into silver mist. Across the illusionary plane, seven gargantuan figures materialized beyond the thread—the remaining Six Ruins, watching her drown. Before her stood Aurelian, the First Archivist, no longer a beast, but a terrified man clinging to the wreckage of a dead world.

"You couldn't let them go," Mei spat, her left arm vanishing up to the shoulder.

"You don't understand!" Aurelian wept.

Assassins attack foundations, Kieran's voice echoed from her past.

"I understand fine," Mei growled. She locked both hands around the silver line. "You made one mistake. You showed me how to break you."

She pulled. The thread groaned. Her body flickered on the edge of non-existence.

You cannot destroy what you love!

"Watch me."

She heaved with everything left in her fading soul. The silver thread cracked, radiating fractures across the sky.

"Die!"

SNAP.

The world detonated.

The First Ruin unraveled in a blinding flash of silver sparks. Tendrils disintegrated into ash, the sky shattered like glass, and millions of trapped souls rushed upward into the atmosphere like a rising tempest.

Mei fell through the blinding light, slamming hard onto solid earth as her physical body snapped back together.

"Mei! Mei, stay with me!"

Hands dragged her upright. Joshua was hovering over her, his face pale with panic. She coughed up a mouthful of ash and blood, leaning against him.

"I'm... fine," she wheezed.

"Your body was fading out!" Joshua checked her arms. "You almost vanished!"

She looked down. Her arms were solid. But coiled tight around her right wrist was a thin, thread of pure pitch black. When she touched it, it sank beneath her skin, disappearing into her bloodstream.

She froze.

Across her vision, the world suddenly erupted into a web of shimmering silver lines—connecting Joshua, the rubble, the dead sky, mapping out millions of possible deaths and apocalyptic futures in a fraction of a second. She slammed her eyes shut, forcing the nightmare away.

"Mei? What is it?" Joshua asked, reaching for her.

She looked at him. For one horrific second, she saw precisely how, when, and where he would die.

She broke his grip and stood up, clutching her dagger.

Far beyond the burning horizon of the Ashen Sector, six ancient, world-ending entities opened their eyes in the dark. The First Archivist was dead, but its crown had been passed.

The Ruins weren't just waiting for her anymore. They were turning her into one of them.

"We need to move," Mei said, her voice hollow as she stared into the dark. "It's not over."
