The First Gate opened, and the air died.
No battlefield waited beyond. Only a corpse of a galaxy—frozen constellations suspended in absolute zero, entire solar systems trapped in the microsecond before extinction.
At the center, looming over the stilled cosmos, sat a throne carved from pitch.
The ancient thing sitting upon it opened its eyes.
Silver light detonated across the void. Pressure slammed into every member of Shadow Squad and Team Blaze, pinning them in place. The titan rose, starlight bending around his shoulders.
Astraeus, Judge of Heroes.
His gaze swept over Joshua, Fei, Jacob Wong, and Ryker—then locked onto Mei.
“You return.”
Joshua snapped his eyes to her. “Return?”
Mei kept her mouth shut, but Jacob stepped into the gap, hand dropping to his hilt. “Nobody touches her.”
Astraeus chuckled—a sound like grinding tectonic plates that shook the dead worlds. “Still protecting her?”
“What is he talking about, Jacob?” Joshua demanded. “What happened before we found her?”
“Remember,” Astraeus commanded, lifting a single hand.
The void exploded.
Reality tore open into the memory of the Ashen Nebula. Planets burned below a sky split by dimensional fissures. In the center stood Jacob—alone, bleeding, and cornered by a nightmare of black crystal armor: The Celestial Devourer.
Jacob’s fist shattered a continent, rupturing the beast’s chest, but the Devourer didn't flinch. It adapted. Jacob’s next blow miss-distanced. The counter-strike was predicted. The gap closed, Jacob’s breath rasped ragged, and the monster raised a single, space-warping claw.
Event Horizon Claw. Gravity buckled. Jacob froze. The strike dropped.
Flash.
Mei materialized between them.
The claw drove through her shoulder, spraying blood into the distorted gravity field. Fei gasped; Joshua swore—but Mei didn't even blink.
She read the monster’s rhythm in milliseconds.
Strike. Step. Pulse from the Black Sun Heart in its chest. Regenerate. Repeat.
She shifted her stance. Defensive blade parrying, killing blade held in reserve. The Devourer adapted—Mei adapted faster. She cut a joint; it compensated. She retreated; it pursued. She pivoted; it took the bait.
She wasn't running. She was leading it into the trap.
The beast lunged, overextending. Mei slipped beneath its guard, vaulted off its arm, and drove both blades directly into the energy channels encircling the Black Sun Heart. A brutal twist of her wrists.
The channels ruptured. The miniature sun collapsed in on itself. The Devourer screamed, disintegrating into static as Mei landed in a low skid.
The memory shattered.
Back in the void, Joshua stared at her, wide-eyed. “You killed that thing?”
Mei wiped blood from her collarbone. “Eventually.”
Jacob offered a dry, faint smirk. “Saved my life first.”
Astraeus descended from the throne, his steps ringing against space itself. “You carry too many endings, girl.”
For a fraction of a second, the phantom smell of rain on a classroom window hit Mei’s senses—an old teacher’s voice echoing: None of this is your fault.
She locked it down.
“The First Trial is Judgment,” Astraeus declared.
Golden light flared. Two divergent roads sliced through the dark:
SILVER: TEAM BLAZE
BLACK STARLIGHT: SHADOW SQUAD
“Only one path may advance,” Astraeus thundered.
Silence hit like a physical weight.
Joshua broke it first, stepping backward away from the silver road. “We’re not leaving them.”
“Not a chance,” a Blaze veteran spat, moving beside him.
Fei crossed the gap without hesitation. “If Mei goes, I go.”
Jacob looked at the split, shook his head, and walked straight into the middle ground. “Guess we’re making this complicated.”
One by one, every warrior fell into line between the two tracks.
“You’re out of your minds,” Mei muttered. “You don't have to do this.”
“That’s exactly why we are,” Joshua grinned.
Mei rolled her eyes and stepped toward Shadow Squad. “I choose them.”
Jacob raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
“Because Blaze can handle themselves,” Mei said, folding her arms. “These idiots turn every simple run into a catastrophic disaster.”
Joshua blinked. “Was that a compliment?”
“Don't get used to it.”
Astraeus slammed his staff against the void. “Enough!”
The two roads shattered into thousands of silver and black shards. But instead of dissolving, the fragments drifted together, fusing into a broad, newly forged highway cutting straight through the dead galaxy.
Astraeus stared at the path, then bowed his head slightly. “You forced a third choice. The First Trial is cleared.”
The frozen stars around them flared back to life, flooding the void with light.
Astraeus stepped close to Mei, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. “You pass... but do not forget, girl. You spend your life standing between death and everyone else.”
He paused, looking into her eyes.
“Remember that you are someone worth saving, too.”
A pillar of starlight smashed down ahead of them, revealing the Architect’s Key suspended over the threshold of the Second Gate.
The team moved out. For the first time in her life, Mei didn't march at the point to take the first blow. She walked shoulder-to-shoulder, surrounded by the living.
Behind them, Astraeus watched until the last shadow crossed the light, leaving the reborn galaxy to its silence.
