"The Capital’s barrier—the Aegis of the Sun—is tuned specifically to intercept external threats," Kael said, pacing around a massive tactical map carved into an obsidian table inside the fortress's command tower. "If forty thousand Iron Vanguard troops march across the border, the High Council will collapse the mountain passes and incinerate the valley before we clear the third line."
"Which means the heavy army is a distraction," Joshua said, leaning over the map. His shield rested against his knee, its golden light now tinged with a faint, violet shadow hue after absorbing the fortress’s ambient aura. "You draw their gaze to the southern border, and we slip inside."
"Not 'we,'" Kael corrected, his cold silver eyes locking onto Mei. "The inner sanctum requires a royal blood seal. Only Mei and I can pass the barrier's heart. You and the speedster will be the breach team."
Fei scoffed, spinning an obsidian dagger around her knuckles. "I don't take orders from the guy who tried to feed us to a void chimera an hour ago."
"It wasn't personal," Kael replied without looking up. "It was a stress test. If you had died on the drawbridge, you wouldn't have survived the Capital’s shadow-hunters anyway."
"Enough," Mei’s voice cut through the room like a drawn blade.

Unlike the cracked, ash-choked wastes, Luminaria burned with artificial sunlight. Towering white marble spires reached into a pristine blue sky, framed by floating gardens and crystal bridges. But beneath the gleaming streets lay six hundred feet of ancient drainage channels and forgotten tombs—the city's rot hidden under gold leaf.

Even deep underground, the earth shuddered. Far to the south, the sky turned a bruised purple as Kael’s Iron Vanguard collided with the Capital’s forward legions.
"The distraction worked," Joshua whispered, holding his shield forward as they trudged through the knee-deep water of the primary aqueduct conduit. "The perimeter sensors just went offline. The Council is routing 80% of their barrier power to the front line."
"Path's clear up to the High Sovereign’s private lift," Fei reported, dropping down from a overhead vault line without making a splash. "Guards are light—mostly honor guards who haven't seen a real fight in fifty years."
Mei stepped out from the shadows of the arched tunnel, her black cloak damp with sewer mist, her eyes fixed on the massive brass gate at the end of the hall. The Lotus Clan crest was etched into the keystone above it—tarnished, scratched, and half-covered in moss.
She placed her gloved hand against the center of the seal.

The heavy brass doors slid open silently, revealing a pristine white marble spiral staircase leading straight into the heart of the Grand Sovereign’s estate.
"Joshua, Fei," Mei said, stepping onto the first riser. "Hold the lift shaft. If the High Council’s shadow-hunters try to cut off our escape, lock it down."
"Don't take too long," Fei smiled thinly, snapping her twin swords into her broad guard stance. "I want to be out of this shining dump before nightfall."
Mei didn't answer. She activated [Shadow Veil], her form dissolving into a whisper of black mist as she ascended toward the throne room above. The time for answers was over.
