The metallic tang of ozone and dust hung thick in the air as the maintenance shaft vibrated again. Down below, the deep, rhythmic thrumming of something massive dragging itself through the ruins sent a fresh cascade of gravel rattling against the metal floor plates.

Joshua pushed himself up, his tactical HUD flickering back to green stability. "That thing didn't die when the anchors went down. The collapse just slowed it."

"It's tracking the residual energy of the Core Fragment," Mei said, her voice low as she checked her blade. "Which means it knows exactly where we are."

A Hunter near the front of the column clicked his flashlight on, illuminating a narrow, dripping service tunnel that sloped sharply downward into the subterranean underbelly of the facility. "This conduit runs off-grid. If it connects to the lower maintenance ring, we might hit an auxiliary tram line."

"Move," Joshua ordered, switching his rifle to high-output mode. "Blaze, double file. Keep your weapons hot. Mei, you're with me in the rear."

They moved fast through the labyrinth of pipes and rusted catwalks. Every shadow seemed to stretch and shift under the erratic amber glow of emergency beacons. The air grew colder, smelling less like machine oil and more like damp earth and old salt.

Mei kept pace behind Joshua, her eyes locked on the junction intersections behind them. The psychic echo of the vision—the burning fortress, the blood, the smile—still hummed at the edge of her consciousness. It wasn't just a memory; it was a warning written in another timeline. Every step they took away from the collapsed chamber felt like rewriting a predetermined outcome.

A heavy metallic crash echoed far down the tunnel behind them.

"It found the hatch," one of the trailing Hunters hissed, his breathing ragged.

"Faster," Joshua muttered without slowing down.

The tunnel abruptly opened into a massive underground terminal. Rusted cargo carts sat abandoned on overgrown tracks that vanished into twin tunnels plunging deeper into the dark. At the center of the platform stood an intact emergency transport car, its power console blinking a faint, amber standby light.

"We can override the terminal and drop the blast doors behind us," Joshua said, sprinting toward the console. "It'll buy us five minutes."

"Five minutes won't be enough if it smells the anomaly signature on the Core," Mei replied, scanning the perimeter. The ceiling here was vaulted and webbed with thick cables—and covered in thousands of tiny, erratic heat signatures.

Click. Click. Click.

The sound rolled down from the upper scaffolding like falling hail.

"Joshua," Mei warned, drawing her second dagger. "It's not alone."

From the darkness above, dozens of smaller predators—scuttling, multi-limbed horrors born from the rift's backwash—dropped onto the platform. The Blaze Hunters immediately opened fire, filling the terminal with blinding muzzle flashes and the roar of heavy caliber rounds.

Joshua slammed his hand onto the transport console, overriding the manual locks. "Car's live! Get the wounded inside!"

Two Hunters dragged a third toward the open bay doors of the transport car while the rest formed a ragged circle, pouring suppressing fire into the descending swarm. But the creatures were too fast, bounding off the concrete pillars and darting through the crossfire.

One lunged directly toward Joshua while his hands were locked on the terminal interface.

Mei didn't hesitate. She threw herself forward, intercepting the creature mid-air. Her blade sank deep into its carapace, and she used its momentum to spin and hurl it into the path of an oncoming wave of monsters.

"Get on the car!" Mei shouted over the deafening screech of the swarm.

"Not without you!" Joshua fired his underbarrel grenade launcher, clearing a ten-foot radius around the platform edge.

A monstrous roar shook the terminal. From the primary tunnel, the tall, multi-limbed horror from the chamber re-emerged, its massive claws tearing through steel reinforcement bars as if they were paper. The smaller creatures parted instantly, bowing to the apex predator.

It locked its sightless head directly on Mei.

"Mei, now!" Joshua yelled, grabbing her arm as she vaulted backward onto the car's threshold.

She sliced through the manual override cable with her dagger just as the monster lunged. The heavy steel blast doors slammed shut with a thunderous crash, sealing off the terminal a split second before the creature's claws could punch through.

Inside the cramped transport car, the engine whined to life, and the vehicle lurched violently forward down the dark subterranean track, carrying them deeper into the unknown depths of the sector.

Joshua slumped against the bulkhead next to her, breathing hard, his gaze shifting from the retreating darkness to Mei's face.

"You keep doing that," he said quietly, the chaos of the fight fading into the rhythmic hum of the accelerating cart.

"Doing what?" Mei asked, keeping her eyes fixed on the forward tunnel.

"Saving my life." Joshua offered a faint, weary half-smile that mirrored the one from her vision—only this time, there was no blood, no fire, just the stark reality of the present. "I'm starting to think you're making a habit of it."

Mei felt the tension in her shoulders ease just a fraction. She sheathed her blade and looked back at him.

"Get used to it," she said. "We have a lot of timelines to break."
