Continuity

The storage hut suddenly felt much smaller. The lantern hanging overhead filled the cramped room with stale heat, and the silence pressing in around them seemed heavier than the thick wooden walls. Adrian stood motionless, staring at the glowing red display while his heartbeat pounded loudly enough that it almost drowned out every other sound.

EXECUTIVE BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED

No, absolutely not. It wasn't just that the words were impossible, it was the wording itself. Not AUTHORIZED USER, not REGISTERED OPERATOR. EXECUTIVE BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED. That implied something far worse, whatever this forgotten system was... it wasn't recognizing Adrian’s Pip-Boy. It was recognizing him.

Tandi looked back and forth between Adrian and Cassandra, growing more uncomfortable by the second. "I feel like I'm missing several really important parts of this conversation."

"You and me both," Adrian muttered, unable to take his eyes off the screen.

Across from him, Cassandra still hadn't moved. The lantern cast sharp shadows across her face, emphasizing the rigid set of her jaw. She wasn't frightened, not exactly, but there was unmistakable recognition in her expression now. Recognition... and calculation.

Somehow, that was even more unsettling, finally, she broke the silence. "Where exactly did Vault 13 get that Pip-Boy?"

Adrian looked up. "I told you already."

"No." Her answer came much sharper than before. "You told me they issued it to you." The change in her tone caught him off guard. She wasn't simply curious anymore. The careful distance she'd maintained since they met was slipping, replaced by an urgency that hadn't been there before.

This mattered to her, a lot. Adrian slowly lowered his arm. "I honestly don't know anything else." That, at least, was true, mostly.

Cassandra stepped closer. "How long has it been behaving strangely?"

"Since I left the Vault."

"I need specifics."

He thought back over the last several days. "Screen flickers, random messages, weird system behavior." He hesitated, "Maintenance robots act different around me."

That got her full attention. "What robots?"

"Just a couple of maintenance units near some old ruins." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I didn't mention it because I figured it was coincidence." Now he wasn't so sure.

Cassandra's eyes narrowed. "They ignored you?"

"Pretty much."

Tandi frowned. "Hold on." She pointed between them. "Why does that sound bad?"

Neither of them answered, because honestly... it sounded incredibly bad. Before anyone could speak again, the Pip-Boy chimed softly. Fresh lines of text began scrolling across the display.

LOCAL NETWORK ENVIRONMENT DETECTED

SEARCHING FOR AVAILABLE INFRASTRUCTURE...

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?" Tandi asked.

Cassandra answered without hesitation. "It's trying to connect."

Silence settled over the hut once again.

The screen continued updating.

CIVILIAN NETWORKS: OFFLINE

DEFENSE NETWORKS: OFFLINE

EXECUTIVE RESPONSE GRID: UNAVAILABLE

SEARCH CONTINUES...

Another line appeared.

WARNING: INFRASTRUCTURE LOSS EXCEEDS ACCEPTABLE PARAMETERS

Adrian stared at the warning. For some reason, those words unsettled him more than everything that had come before. Without meaning to, his imagination filled in the blanks. Satellites drifting silently along dead in orbit. Military command bunkers waiting forever for orders that would never come. Cities reduced to radioactive ruins while automated systems continued searching for a government that no longer existed.

The Continuity Authority wasn't simply old software. It was trying to perform a job that had ended decades ago. A ghost trapped inside a machine. Still searching, still waiting… still believing America would answer.

"Jesus," Adrian whispered.

Tandi rubbed both hands over her face. "Okay." She exhaled slowly. "I officially hate this."

"Yeah," Adrian said quietly. "I'm starting to join you."

☢ ☢ ☢

For the first time since entering the hut, Cassandra finally looked away from the Pip-Boy. Her attention settled entirely on Adrian. "You need to understand something." Her voice had changed again, calmer, more controlled, almost instructional. "The government before the Great War built systems specifically designed to survive nuclear war."

Adrian nodded slowly. "Continuity programs."

"Yes."

There was that word again. Continuity, not survival. Continuation. As though the United States had never planned to die, only to endure.

Cassandra folded her arms, choosing each word with obvious care. "Most of those systems failed after the bombs, others became isolated. A few... adapted." Her eyes drifted back toward the glowing screen. "But executive systems..." She stopped.

Mid-sentence.

Adrian caught it immediately. "You know about them." This time it wasn't a question.

Cassandra remained silent for several seconds. When she finally answered, her voice was almost reluctant, "...a little."

Adrian didn't believe that for a second. Everything about her reaction suggested something far deeper. Every answer she gave raised two more questions. Whatever Cassandra Hale really was... whatever life she'd lived before Adrian stumbled into the wasteland... this was dangerously close to it.

Tandi looked from one to the other in mounting frustration. "Can someone explain what 'executive' actually means?"

Cassandra answered without taking her eyes off Adrian. "Pre-war command authority."

The words hung in the air, simple and matter of fact. But they carried enormous weight. Adrian slowly looked back down at the Pip-Boy strapped to his arm. For the first time since waking up inside Vault 13... he had the growing suspicion that the wasteland hadn't chosen him by accident.

Something from the old world had been waiting and somehow... it had finally found the person it believed should answer. The implications settled over the room one piece at a time. Then all at once.

Tandi's eyes widened as she looked between them. "Like military authority?"

"Yes."

Adrian let out a weak laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Cool. Awesome. Love that for me."

Nobody laughed, that was never a good sign. The Pip-Boy vibrated again, the low hum sounding unnaturally loud inside the cramped storage hut. Fresh text appeared.

PARTIAL ACCESS ROUTE IDENTIFIED

A second later, the display changed again, coordinates. Nothing else, no map and no description. Just a blinking location marker somewhere far southwest of Shady Sands. Cassandra saw it immediately and for the first time since Adrian had met her, her composure cracked open. It wasn't the measured concern she'd shown during firefights or the guarded caution she carried everywhere… it was genuine alarm.

"You recognize it," Adrian said quietly.

She didn't answer, she didn't have to. The silence told him enough. His stomach tightened. "What is it?"

Cassandra kept staring at the coordinates for several long seconds before finally speaking. "An old military site."

Tandi frowned. "You know every military site in California?"

"No." A brief hesitation followed, "...only the important ones."

There it was again, another piece slipping through the cracks. Little by little, the image Adrian had built of Cassandra kept falling apart. She wasn't just another wasteland traveler, she wasn't just an exceptionally capable survivor. Whatever she really was... it had something to do with the old world.

The Pip-Boy continued displaying the coordinates without another sound. Waiting and patient. As if it knew they would eventually move.

Adrian dragged a tired hand across his face. "This feels like the beginning of a really bad idea."

"Yes," Cassandra replied without hesitation. Then, after a moment, she added quietly, "...which usually means it's important."

He stared at her. "You know that's exactly how horror movies start, right?"

She looked back at him, completely serious. "I don't know what horror movies are."

Adrian sighed, "...right."

Tandi pointed toward the glowing screen. "So, what now?"

Nobody answered immediately. Realistically, Adrian could see only three choices. He could ignore the message and pretend none of this had happened. He could somehow destroy the Pip-Boy and hope whatever was inside it died with it. Or... he could follow the coordinates.

The problem was, deep down, he already knew which option he would choose. Not because he trusted the system. If anything, he trusted it less with every new message, but curiosity had always been one of his biggest flaws, and this was the biggest mystery he'd ever stumbled into.

Across the room, Cassandra studied him with a knowing look. "You're thinking about going."

Adrian met her eyes. "You're not?"

She didn't answer right away. When she finally did, her voice was quieter than before, "...yes."

That surprised him. Despite all her warnings, all her caution, and whatever history she clearly had with the old world... part of Cassandra wanted answers just as badly as he did.

The Pip-Boy flickered one final time, another line appeared beneath the coordinates.

PRIORITY DIRECTIVE: RECLAMATION

Both Adrian and Cassandra froze. Neither of them said a word. Tandi looked back and forth between them, clearly sensing the change without understanding it. "What?"

Adrian barely heard her, his eyes stayed fixed on that single word. Reclamation. The same word that had haunted the strange messages since he left Vault 13. The same word buried somewhere inside whatever protocol had chosen him.

Until now it had been vague. Just another piece of an impossible puzzle, now it was a directive. An objective… a mission.

Slowly, Adrian looked up. Cassandra was already watching him. For the first time since they'd met... they both understood they weren't just dealing with an old Pip-Boy anymore. Something from before the Great War had reached across eighty-five years of ruin and it had just given its first order.
