Statute
Static continued hissing softly through the Pip-Boy speaker. Nobody moved, nobody even seemed to breathe normally. Adrian stared at the screen, his mind desperately trying to make sense of what he'd just heard.
Genetic variance accepted under Continuity Preservation Statute. The sentence felt strangely clinical. Like it had been written by lawyers, approved by generals, and preserved for nearly a century without anyone ever questioning it. It also carried the unsettling feeling that bureaucracy had somehow survived the apocalypse.
Tandi finally found her voice. "What does that even mean?"
Excellent question, Adrian slowly turned toward Cassandra. Cassandra caught him watching her almost immediately. For several seconds neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian broke the silence. "You know that phrase."
It wasn't a question anymore. She said nothing, she didn't have to. The silence answered for her.
The Pip-Boy crackled again.
"Executive authentication... incomplete." Another burst of static. "Additional verification pathways... available."
The screen shifted, new options appeared one after another beneath the warning.
VOICE AUTHORIZATION
FEDERAL CREDENTIALS
COMMAND PHRASE
BIOLOGICAL CONFIRMATION
Adrian stared at the list. "This feels aggressively above my pay grade."
Tandi pointed uneasily toward the screen. "Why does it think you're... executive whatever?"
Adrian let out a helpless laugh. "I was really hoping one of you knew." Neither of them smiled.
Cassandra remained focused on the display, studying it the same way she studied battlefields. Only this time there was something else beneath her concentration, unease.
Adrian took a cautious step closer. "Cassandra."
Her eyes finally lifted to meet his. He saw it again, conflict. Something held tightly behind years of practiced self-control. She looked like someone standing on the edge of saying far more than they should.
Eventually she spoke. "The old government built succession systems."
Adrian frowned. "Meaning?"
"In case leadership died." The implication landed immediately, the Great War. Military command shattered in minutes. America hadn't simply planned to survive nuclear war. It had planned for the possibility that its entire leadership would disappear overnight.
So, it created replacements, fallback authority… Continuity.
Tandi rubbed both hands over her face again. "You're telling me there's still some old government machine trying to run America?"
"Yes." Cassandra didn't hesitate, not even for a second.
Adrian slowly looked back down at the Pip-Boy. He finally understood why the word Reclamation bothered him so much. These systems didn't believe America had died, they believed it had... paused. Waiting for someone with the proper authority to press play again.
The speaker crackled to life once more. "Continuity authority... remains active." Heavy static distorted every other word. "Reclamation directives... pending executive confirmation."
Adrian frowned at the Pip-Boy. "Okay, first of all..." he pointed accusingly at the screen. "Stop saying 'Reclamation' like you're about to invade Canada."
Tandi stared at him. "This is your reaction?"
"I cope through sarcasm."
"That's actually fair."
☢ ☢ ☢
The machine ignored both of them. "Current national infrastructure status... unacceptable." Without warning, the display flickered. Images replaced the text, not photographs exactly. Reconstructions of archived intelligence snapshots. Ruined cities stretched across the tiny monochrome screen. Collapsed highways, silent military installations, orbital satellite constellations blinking out one by one and skyscrapers burning beneath mushroom clouds.
Then casualty estimates began scrolling. Millions, then tens of millions. The numbers climbed faster than Adrian could read them. Entire regions appeared on the display before being stamped with a single word. LOST
Another map, another region. LOST Another. LOST Adrian felt his stomach turn. For the first time since arriving in this world, the Great War stopped feeling like ancient history.
This wasn't something he'd read about in terminals or watched through cinematic opening sequences. These were status reports, records generated while civilization was actively collapsing. The Pip-Boy wasn't just showing him history. It was showing him the last moments of the United States government as it watched an entire nation die in real time.
The screen finally steadied, one line remained.
RESTORATION PRIORITY REMAINS UNCHANGED
Without warning, Cassandra stepped forward. "Disable visual playback." The command came out instantly. Sharp, professional almost instinctive.
The synthesized voice paused for the first time since establishing contact. Then it answered. "Command authority... insufficient."
Silence settled over the storage hut, a different kind of silence this time.
Tandi slowly turned toward Cassandra. "You've done this before."
The observation hung in the air, Cassandra's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Before she could answer, the Pip-Boy crackled again. "Warning. Unauthorized personnel detected."
All three of them froze. The display shifted once more, a thin scanning bar appeared and began moving steadily across the screen. Left to right. Nobody spoke while it worked. The bar reached the end, stopped and new text appeared.
INDIVIDUAL IDENTIFIED
A second line followed.
STATUS: LEGACY CLEARANCE HOLDER
The room went completely still, Adrian slowly turned toward Cassandra. She looked like someone had just had the ground pulled out from beneath her. Not fear, exposure. The look of someone whose deepest secret had just introduced itself.
Tandi stared between them. "What?"
Neither answered. The Pip-Boy did.
CLEARANCE LINEAGE CONFIRMED
Another line appeared.
HALE, CASSANDRA M.
Then another.
PROVISIONAL ACCESS STATUS: ACTIVE
Adrian felt his heartbeat stumble. Hale. Clearance, lineage. His mind raced through everything she'd said over the past week. Her knowledge of military systems, the way she'd recognized the interface, how she'd known the terminology and the instinctive command she'd given only seconds ago.
None of it had been coincidence… none of it.
☢ ☢ ☢
Cassandra closed her eyes for the briefest moment. Just one slow breath. When she opened them again, the mask had returned. Calm controlled and professional. But Adrian had already seen what the crack had exposed.
Tandi pointed directly at her. "You know this thing?!"
Cassandra met her gaze, "...yes." No hesitation, no excuses and no attempt to dodge the question. Just the truth. The storage hut suddenly felt even smaller than before.
Adrian couldn't take his eyes off her. "You've known what this was the entire time?"
"No." The answer came immediately and honestly. "I suspected."
That one word carried far more weight than any explanation could have. She hadn't known, but she'd recognized enough to be afraid.
The Pip-Boy speaker crackled softly once more. "Legacy lineage access... recognized." A brief burst of static followed. Then, in the same emotionless voice... "welcome back... Hale family."
The words echoed through the room. Mechanical and impersonal. Yet somehow deeply personal at the same time.
Outside, someone laughed around one of the celebration fires. Music drifted faintly across the settlement. Life in Shady Sands carried on, completely unaware that inside an old storage hut, two survivors had just been recognized by a government that had supposedly died almost a century ago.
Adrian looked from the Pip-Boy to Cassandra. His thoughts finally settled into one unavoidable conclusion. Cassandra Hale wasn't simply connected to the old United States. She had inherited a piece of it too.
