Hidden Things
The words settled over the storage hut like a weight. Someone hid it.
Wind rattled softly against the outer walls while distant laughter from the celebration drifted across the settlement. It sounded impossibly far away now, like it belonged to a different world. Adrian kept his eyes on Cassandra. "You don't hide military facilities by accident."
"No," she replied quietly. "You don't."
Tandi folded her arms. "Okay... I officially feel underqualified for this conversation."
"Honestly?" Adrian sighed. "Same." At this point he felt underqualified for his own life.
The Pip-Boy continued displaying the coordinates without another sound. Patient, always waiting. Cassandra stepped closer to the glowing display again, studying the numbers with narrowed eyes. After several seconds, she spoke. "These coordinates aren't exact."
Adrian frowned. "What?"
"They've been intentionally offset."
That pulled his attention away from everything else. "You can tell that just by looking?"
"Yes." The answer came without hesitation, again. Way too much familiarity.
Tandi pointed directly at her. "You keep doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Knowing terrifying government stuff like it's normal."
For the first time all night, Cassandra answered without trying to soften it. "It was normal where I grew up."
Silence, Adrian's brain caught the wording immediately. Not my father told me stories and not I read old records.Where I grew up. That was different. Tandi noticed it too, judging by the look she gave Cassandra.
Before either of them could ask another question, the Pip-Boy crackled back to life. "Environmental scan... complete." Another line followed. "Civilian settlement viability low."
All three of them looked at the screen. Adrian blinked. "Excuse me?"
The mechanical voice continued. "Agricultural sustainability, insufficient. Defensive infrastructure, inadequate. Long-term survival probability, unacceptable."
Tandi looked personally offended. "It insulted the town."
Adrian pointed accusingly at the Pip-Boy. "Yeah, absolutely not. These people are doing their best."
The machine remained unimpressed. "Recommendation, federal intervention."
Cassandra went still. She understood the implications immediately. Adrian wasn't sure he understood all of them, but he knew enough. Federal intervention, in old government language, probably didn't mean sending agricultural advisors. It usually involved soldiers.
Tandi looked between them. "You both made the same face again."
Neither answered, the speaker crackled once more. "Population recovery possible, under reclamation oversight."
Adrian slowly rubbed his forehead. "Okay..." he looked at the Pip-Boy. "The creepy patriotism machine is starting to sound a little fascist."
A tiny snort escaped Cassandra before she caught herself, it vanished almost immediately. "The system isn't ideological."
Adrian looked at her. "That feels debatable."
"No." She shook her head. "It's procedural."
That was somehow worse, ideology could change. Procedure simply kept moving. Cold, efficient and unquestioning. The wasteland suddenly felt much smaller beneath the shadow of whatever these systems had once been.
☢ ☢ ☢
Adrian leaned back against one of the storage crates, trying to organize everything racing through his head. This had escalated unbelievably fast. A week ago he'd been starting a replay a heavily modded Fallout 3. Now an ancient government network recognized him as an executive authority, hidden continuity systems were coming online, Cassandra Hale clearly belonged to a family tied to those systems and somewhere beneath almost a century of dust... a dead nation was waiting for orders.
Completely insane. Somehow... still less stressful than working retail during the holidays.
The Pip-Boy chimed, a fresh message appeared.
LOCAL POWER SIGNATURE DETECTED
A directional marker appeared beneath it, not southwest. Close, very close.
Cassandra noticed it immediately. "So there is something here."
Adrian frowned. "Here where?"
She looked toward the floor. "Under the settlement."
The room fell silent. Tandi stared at her. "Under Shady Sands?"
Cassandra nodded slowly. "Probably old infrastructure."
Adrian found himself looking down at the dirt floor as well, of course… of course there was buried pre-war government infrastructure beneath an innocent farming village. This was Fallout. Nothing stayed simple for long.
Tandi looked increasingly uncomfortable. "You're telling me there's government stuff under our town?"
"Most settlements are built near old infrastructure," Cassandra explained. "Water systems, utility corridors and old transportation routes."
Adrian slowly connected the dots. "Vaults."
Cassandra's eyes drifted toward him. "Sometimes."
The Pip-Boy interrupted again. "Subsurface relay detected." Another line followed. "Limited node access available."
Adrian immediately pointed at the screen. "No."
Cassandra glanced at him. "You don't even know what it does."
"Exactly."
For once, Tandi nodded in agreement. "I'm actually with him on this one."
The machine continued regardless. "Relay status dormant." A final line played. "Executive presence may restore local operational capability."
Tandi groaned loudly. "I hate every sentence this thing says."
Reasonable, very reasonable. Adrian looked back at Cassandra. "You know what a relay is." Again, it wasn't a question.
She exhaled slowly before answering. "Communications infrastructure."
"How advanced?"
A brief hesitation. "Potentially... very."
Translation. Dangerous.
He noticed something else. Despite everything she'd said, despite every warning she'd given him... part of Cassandra wanted to find it. The same curiosity pulling at Adrian tugged at her too. Because whatever lay beneath Shady Sands wasn't just another forgotten bunker. It connected to the Continuity Authority. To Reclamation, to the old United States and, somehow... to her.
The realization came to Adrian all at once. "You've been looking for places like this."
Cassandra froze, only for a fraction of a second. But it was enough… bingo.
Tandi looked between them. "You have?"
A long silence followed, finally, Cassandra nodded, "...yes."
No denial, no carefully worded half-truth. Just honesty. Adrian studied her for a long moment. "Why?"
For the first time since he'd met her, Cassandra looked away. It was a small movement, but it was the most vulnerable he'd ever seen her. When she finally answered, her voice was almost a whisper. "Because my family disappeared trying to protect them."
☢ ☢ ☢
Silence filled the storage hut, Adrian didn't have a joke this time. Nothing sarcastic came to mind, because suddenly everything fit together. The secrecy, the training and the caution. Her knowledge of military systems.
She hadn't been wandering the wasteland at random, she'd been following the trail of people she'd lost. Searching for ghosts that the rest of the world had forgotten.
The Pip-Boy hummed softly once more. One final line appeared beneath the coordinates.
RECLAMATION REQUIRES SACRIFICE
Adrian stared at the words. For the first time that night... he wasn't sure the machine was talking about America.
