Reclamation America

The first thing Adrian learned about the wasteland was that it smelled nothing like he expected. Not ash, smoke or anything dramatic or cinematic as the games made the apocalypse seem.

It smelled like hot dust, dry stone, rusted metal, sunbaked decay and underneath all of it something old… something abandoned.

The Vault door rumbled shut behind him with a grinding roar that echoed across the canyon walls. Adrian stopped walking. For a moment he just stood there staring out across the desert while the massive steel door sealed itself behind him forever.

The sound faded slowly, then there was only wind. Real silence. Not city silence or suburban silence. True emptiness. No traffic, no distant sirens and no planes overhead… nothing.

The Mojave in New Vegas had always felt alive. This place didn’t, this felt dead.

Adrian adjusted the strap of his duffel bag and slowly started walking. The sun was merciless, within fifteen minutes sweat clung to the back of his vault suit while heat radiated upward from the cracked earth beneath his boots. The Vault suit itself was surprisingly durable but absolutely terrible for desert travel.

“Fantastic design,” Adrian muttered. “Really tactical.”

Wind swept dust across the barren landscape around him. Every rock formation looked identical, every direction looked empty and the farther he walked from Vault 13… the smaller he felt.

That sensation surprised him most, in the games the wasteland always felt manageable. Scaled down and understandable. Here? It stretched endlessly toward the horizon… an entire dead world.

Hours passed slowly, Adrian followed the rough map markings while trying not to think about how easily he could die out here.

He passed old road fragments buried beneath sand, rusted highway signs half melted by time, skeletal remains of ancient cars and at one point he found an old billboard collapsed against a rocky hill. Only fragments of the advertisement remained visible beneath dirt and faded paint. A smiling family, Nuka-Cola bottles in their hands. The words on it faded away.

Adrian stared at it quietly. Even ruined… Fallout’s America still looked weirdly optimistic. Like the world had smiled while marching toward nuclear annihilation.

A sudden crackling noise snapped Adrian from his thoughts. He froze instantly. Movement somewhere ahead. His hand moved toward the pistol awkwardly.

Another sound, low growling. Adrian slowly turned, three creatures stood partially hidden among nearby rocks. Hairless, lean and malformed. Their skin looked stretched painfully tight across exposed ribs while their cloudy eyes locked directly onto him… Mole rats.

“Oh.” The relief lasted about half a second, then the nearest one screamed and charged him. “Oh SHIT.” Adrian yanked the pistol from the holster so fast he nearly dropped it.

The mole rat closed distance terrifyingly fast, its claws tore across the dirt while saliva sprayed from its oversized teeth. Adrian fired wildly, the gunshot exploded across the desert.

The recoil shocked him instantly. Louder and harder than expected. The first bullet missed completely, the second shot hit. The mole rat twisted sideways violently with a wet shriek but kept coming.

“Why are you still moving, you disgusting skin goblin?!” Adrian stumbled backward while firing again. The third round finally smashed through the creature’s skull, it collapsed only a few feet away.

The other two charged each coming from a different angle. Adrian’s pulse spiked. The wasteland suddenly became chaos. Snarling, gunfire and dust.

The second mole rat slammed into his leg hard enough to nearly knock him down. Pain ripped through his calf as claws shredded the vault suit fabric. Adrian screamed something incoherent and emptied two rounds directly into the thing at point-blank range, sending blood spraying across the dirt.

The third creature lunged.

BOOM.

The shotgun blast echoed across the desert like thunder as the mole rat exploded sideways in a spray of gore. Adrian froze. Someone stood atop a nearby rock formation holding a pump-action shotgun low against one shoulder.

Long coat, dust-covered boots and dark hair tied back loosely. The stranger moved with calm deliberate confidence while smoke drifted slowly from the shotgun barrel. Adrian stared upward breathing heavily.

The woman stared back down at him with sharp unreadable eyes, then casually pumped the shotgun.

CHK-CHAK.

The sound echoed beautifully across the wasteland.

“Nice shot…” Adrian managed weakly.

The woman stepped down from the rocks carefully, up close she looked somewhere in her mid twenties, sun tanned skin, an athletic build and wasteland gear layered carefully over darker armored fabric beneath. Not scavenger equipment, too organized and too clean.

Her eyes flicked over him quickly. Vault suit, pistol and Pip-Boy. She paused slightly at the Pip-Boy.

Interesting.

Then her expression became neutral again. “You’re bleeding.”

Adrian looked down. “Oh.” His leg hurt significantly more now that adrenaline was fading. “Yeah that seems medically accurate.”

The woman stared at him silently for a second, “…you always talk like that?”

“When terrified? Yeah.”

Something that might have been amusement flickered briefly across her face. Gone almost immediately. She stepped closer and crouched beside the dead mole rat.

Slow deliberate movements, definitely not amateur wastelander behavior. Adrian noticed immediately.

The woman glanced toward him without looking fully. “You shoot like garbage.”

“That was literally my first gunfight.”

That actually made her pause. “You’ve never fired a weapon before?”

“I mean” Adrian hesitated, “not at something trying to eat me.” Which technically wasn’t a lie.

The woman studied him more carefully now. “You’re from a vault.”

“Very observant.”

"You move wrong."

Adrian frowned. "What does that mean?"

"You hesitate." She gestured toward the dead mole rats. "You expect people to give you time to think." Her eyes met his. "The wasteland doesn't."

The woman stood, slinging the shotgun over her shoulder. Adrian noticed the details now. Military posture, disciplined movements and constant awareness of everything around her.

Not a raider or a merchant, something else. She extended a small medical kit toward him. “Wrap the leg before infection sets in.”

Adrian accepted it carefully. “Thanks.”

“Don’t thank me yet.” The woman scanned the horizon slowly. “You fired a lot.”

Right, gunshots. Noise in the wasteland was bad.

Adrian immediately started wrapping his shredded calf while trying not to hiss in pain. “This place really is trying to kill me immediately huh?”

“Yes.” No hesitation whatsoever.

That actually made him laugh. A little hysterical and some of it genuine. Because despite the pain… despite nearly dying… he felt alive. More alive than he had in years. The realization hit him suddenly and hard. This world was horrifying, violent, unfair, brutal and Adrian loved every second of it.

That thought should have disturbed him more than it did.

The woman watched him quietly. “You’re strange.”

“You have no idea.”

The wind swept across the desert again, for a few moments neither spoke. Then finally, “What’s your name?” Adrian asked.

The woman hesitated almost imperceptibly. Then answered, “Cassandra.”
