The smoke smelled like burning rubber and cooked meat, Adrian noticed that first. Not the blood or the bodies. Not even the overturned caravan wagon half blocking the ruined highway. The smell hit before anything else.
Hot, greasy and wrong.

They crouched along the rocky ridge overlooking the attack site while dusk settled fully over the wasteland. Below them, six raiders moved around the wreckage beneath the glow of makeshift lanterns.
The caravan had been hit hard, one brahmin lay dead beside the road with its second head partially blown apart. Another still twitched weakly in the dirt while blood pooled beneath its enormous body. Three human corpses were scattered nearby, trader guards from the look of it. One had been stripped naked already.
Adrian stared down silently, this wasn't stylized Fallout violence anymore. This was murder. Ugly, messy real murder.
A raider kicked one of the bodies over and laughed loudly, the sound echoed through the darkness.
Cassandra studied the scene calmly beside him. "Six," she whispered. "Two rifles. Pipe weapons mostly."
Adrian swallowed slowly. The shotgun suddenly felt much heavier in his hands. His heartbeat thudded hard enough he could hear it in his ears.
Cassandra noticed instantly. "Nervous?"
"Shockingly yes."
"That's good."
Adrian glanced sideways at her. "You worried I'd enjoy this too much?"
"No." Her eyes stayed fixed on the camp below. "I'd worry if you enjoyed it too little."
That sentence sat heavily in his chest, because she meant it. Out here hesitation killed people. Morality still existed, but survival came first.
A raider near the wagon suddenly shouted. Two others dragged something from the back of the caravan. Someone, a woman, still alive.
Adrian's stomach tightened, she looked barely conscious. Hands tied. Face covered in blood.
One of the raiders grabbed her hair roughly while another laughed. "Good condition too," someone called.
Another answered, "Maybe for another hour." The group burst into ugly laughter.
Adrian felt something cold settle behind his ribs. Not fear, anger. Pure immediate anger.
Beside him Cassandra watched his reaction carefully. "Still want to help?"
Adrian kept staring downwards, "...yeah."
Good answer apparently, because Cassandra handed him a handful of shotgun shells. "Then listen carefully." Her voice changed slightly, sharper now and more professional. "Raiders rely on confusion and fear. Most are cowards once resistance starts." She pointed toward the camp. "Tall one with the hunting rifle dies first." Adrian nodded slowly. "Second rifleman near the fire next." Another nod. "You miss either shot and this gets ugly fast."
"I'm noticing a pattern where things are ugly regardless."
"That's the wasteland." Simple and matter-of-fact. Cassandra checked the pistol she had swapped for the shotgun before looking toward him again. "When shooting starts, commit fully."
Adrian met her eyes, no jokes now and no flirting. Just reality. "You do this a lot?"
"Yes." Not pride, or shame. Just fact.

Below them, the raiders continued tearing through the caravan while the captured woman struggled weakly beside the fire. Adrian adjusted his grip on the shotgun, his palms were slick with sweat. This was insane.
Yesterday he'd been sitting in his apartment watching television. Now he was preparing to kill actual human beings alongside a mysterious wasteland woman who moved like she'd spent her life in special operations… life came at you fast.
Cassandra looked at him one last time. "You ready?"
No, not even remotely. Adrian racked a shell into the chamber anyway.
CHK-CHAK.
The sound seemed unnaturally loud among the rocks, he let out a slow breath. "Let's go save capitalism."
Cassandra blinked. "What?"
"Nothing."
Then she moved, one moment she was beside him. The next she was sliding down the rocky slope with frightening speed, disappearing into the darkness toward the right side of the camp. Adrian swallowed and followed, because staying on the ridge alone suddenly sounded like an even worse idea.
☢ ☢ ☢
The night air had turned noticeably colder. Cassandra circled wide. Adrian crept left, using the rusting shell of an old car for cover while trying very hard not to trip over his own feet and die before the shooting even started. The rifleman near the fire shifted, Adrian raised the shotgun.
The barrel trembled… ‘breathe.’ The raider laughed at something behind him… ‘breathe.’ Adrian pulled the trigger.
BOOM.
The blast shattered the quiet, the raider's chest erupted in blood and torn leather before he was thrown backward into the fire. Chaos exploded across the camp. "AMBUSH!" Another rifleman spun toward the sound.
BOOM.
Cassandra's pistol barked, half the man's face disappeared as he collapsed before he could shoulder his rifle. The camp dissolved into panic.
Adrian worked the pump almost automatically.
CHK-CHAK.
A raider rushed around the wagon with a rusted pipe pistol in hand, Adrian fired again. The blast caught him square in the chest. He folded into the dirt, screaming, still alive.
Adrian hesitated, for half a heartbeat he simply stared while the man writhed and clawed at the ground. "Oh... fuck..."
A gunshot cracked past his head, something hot tore across his shoulder. Then pain exploded through him.
"MOVE!" Cassandra shouted.
Right, move. Adrian threw himself behind the overturned wagon as bullets hammered into the rusted metal above him, the world became noise. Gunfire, screaming, the terrified bellows of the surviving brahmin and the crackling flames… his own heartbeat pounding inside his skull.
One raider grabbed the captive woman, dragging her upright to use as a shield. Cassandra fired once, the round punched through his throat. He collapsed without another sound.
Another raider charged Adrian with a rusted machete raised overhead, there wasn't time to think, instinct took over. The shotgun swung upward beneath the attacker's chin.
BOOM.
Blood sprayed across the wagon canvas as the body collapsed almost on top of him. Breathing hard, Adrian shoved the corpse away.
Jesus Christ, this was real. Not a game or a movie… real!! Some part of him thrilled at the intensity of it! Not the killing, not really. The survival, the complete, brutal clarity of life and death. No emails, no bills and no meaningless routine. Just existence stripped down to its harshest truth.
A final gunshot echoed across the highway. Then... silence. Adrian remained crouched for another few seconds, the shotgun still clutched tightly in his hands. Smoke drifted through the cold night air while his ears rang.
Finally, Cassandra's voice broke the silence. "Clear."
He rose cautiously, the camp looked like a slaughterhouse. Bodies lay scattered around the wagons. One wounded raider still twitched weakly beside the fire, Cassandra walked toward him without hesitation. The man looked up, panic filling his eyes. "Please..."
BOOM.
Silence returned, Adrian stared.
Cassandra calmly reloaded before looking at him. "What?"
"You just..."
"He was dying."
No anger or cruelty. Just certainty and perhaps… mercy. Adrian honestly couldn't decide.
☢ ☢ ☢
Near the fire, the rescued woman collapsed into quiet sobs. Cassandra immediately crossed to her, something in her posture changed, only slightly. But enough. She spoke more gently while cutting the woman's bindings free.
Adrian slowly lowered the shotgun. Now that the adrenaline was fading, his hands shook uncontrollably. He looked down, blood stained the sleeves of his Vault suit. Not his… mostly.
"Holy shit." The words escaped almost as a whisper.
A few minutes later Cassandra returned. "She'll live."
"That's good."
"Her husband won't."
Adrian's eyes drifted toward the dead trader lying beside the road. Right, not everyone got saved. There were no clean victories out here. The realization settled heavily inside him.
Cassandra studied him in the flickering firelight. "You okay?"
Adrian let out a tired laugh. "That feels like a much more complicated question than it did an hour ago."
She didn't argue. The wind carried smoke across the ruined highway while stars slowly emerged overhead. The wasteland stretched endlessly into the darkness.
Adrian looked down at the dead raiders, then at the shotgun resting in his hands. Finally... he looked back at Cassandra.
