"Anddd... my first worker has appeared."
Liam found himself surrounded by dozens of pupae, his excitement growing as he watched them slowly approach the final stage of their development. As the queen, he had already spent most of his stored energy and body reserves producing eggs, leaving him heavily dependent on the workers that would soon emerge. Once they became active, he would finally have others capable of searching for food and maintaining the colony.
Liam focused his attention on one particular worker pupa and watched as its cocoon gradually began to open. The outer layer shifted before the newly emerged ant slowly pulled itself free. For several moments, it remained still, its pale body struggling to adjust to its surroundings before its legs finally moved beneath it and supported its weight.
The tiny worker eventually stood upright before looing directly toward Liam.
"So cute..." Liam couldn’t help feeling fascinated by the sight.
"It looks like a little white cotton candy."
The newly emerged worker didn’t remain idle for long. Only a few hours after becoming capable of movement, it began performing its first task. Without requiring any instructions from Liam, the worker immediately left the colony and began searching the surrounding environment for sources of sugar and other nutrients.
Liam watched it disappear into the tunnels.
"I don’t know if ants are workaholics or just slaves."
He paused as another worker began moving nearby.
"Or maybe they’re just passionate about their jobs?"
"Meh, I don’t even know."
The colony continued developing while Liam observed the worker’s journey.
About an hour later, the worker returned. Liam immediately noticed that it wasn’t carrying anything.
"You are back now, so where’s the food?"
The worker approached him without anything visible in its mandibles. Liam became confused as the worker ant grew closer and closer.
"What... is she going to feed me with her mouth?" The realization made Liam hesitate.
He had spent enough time observing ants to understand what was about to happen, but knowing about something and experiencing it personally were completely different things.
The worker moved toward him and began feeding him through direct mouth-to-mouth transfer.
Liam was reluctant at first, but after the worker continued attempting to feed him, he eventually gave in.
"That was so gross..." Liam paused after receiving the nutrients.
"Yet it was kind of sweet." He embarrassingly admitted.
Days passed from Liam’s perspective, and the small nest gradually transformed into a much larger network of tunnels. The ants expanded in multiple directions, creating separate nesting areas, feeding grounds, storage chambers, and passages connecting the different sections of the colony.
Eventually, another chamber was constructed.
The chamber served as a final resting place for workers that had exhausted their short lifespans after spending their entire existence serving the colony and its queen. One by one, the bodies of fallen workers were carried inside and placed together, eventually forming a quiet pile within the chamber.
Their individual lives were brief and easily forgotten as the colony continued moving forward, functioning not as a collection of individuals, but as a single living organism that constantly replaced those it had lost.
He stared at it for a moment before mentally sighing.
"Hopefully, we won’t have to use that room anytime soon."
The colony continued expanding gradually. The number of workers increased from a single individual to several, then dozens. New workers emerged from their pupae and immediately joined the endless cycle of labor that kept the colony functioning.
Liam watched the growing population with fascination.
"It’s crazy that this is basically a harem... Though I’m also technically a female."
The thought amused him. Liam chuckled internally, remembering that the overwhelming majority of ants within a colony were female, with males primarily serving reproductive purposes.
The more Liam observed, the more fascinated he became by the colony’s organization.
The ants continued working without requiring commands from him. They scavenged for food, transported resources, cared for the developing brood, maintained the tunnels, protected the nest, and continuously expanded their territory.
Nobody needed to tell them what to do. Each ant simply performed the role that had been assigned to it by the colony’s biological and social structure.
They worked almost endlessly, moving through the tunnels like tiny machines that never seemed to run out of energy.
Liam watched them for a long time. "This is actually incredible."
He had originally entered the colony because he wanted to practice managing life and understand how a single organism could influence the development of a larger society. Instead, he had discovered something far more interesting. The queen did not directly command every worker. The colony functioned because every member had a role.
Liam slowly began understanding the principle behind it.
For a colony to successfully grow, every member couldn’t simply perform the same task. There needed to be a stable social hierarchy where different individuals fulfilled different functions, allowing the entire group to operate as one enormous system.
The realization reminded him of the civilizations he eventually wanted to create on his planet. A civilization where he wouldn’t need to constantly intervene.
He then continued watching the colony grow, becoming increasingly curious about how far these tiny creatures could develop under his observation.
And in no time, multiple weeks had already passed from Liam’s perspective, bringing with them several generations of workers that were born, served the colony, and eventually disappeared into the quiet chamber reserved for the dead. Each generation inherited the work of those that came before, continuing to expand the tunnels, gather food, care for the growing brood, and protect the nest from threats.
The colony slowly increased in size as new workers replaced the old, allowing its territory to stretch farther into the surrounding soil. Liam watched every generation with growing fascination, seeing how their combined efforts gradually transformed the once-small nest into an organized and thriving colony.
None of them understood the future, yet every worker continued its duties, unknowingly contributing toward the survival and prosperity of generations that would come long after it was gone.
