Reincarnated as a Slave, I Built the Strongest Empire

The small hut assigned to us sat near the edge of the rebel outpost, half-hidden by the mist and the soft glow of the marsh plants. Night had settled fully over the Whispering Marshes, and the distant sounds of the camp felt far away. Inside, a single oil lamp cast warm light across the rough wooden walls. Lira sat beside me on the low pallet that served as our bed, her fox ears slightly lowered, her tail curled loosely against her leg.

She had recovered more than I expected. The worst of the burns had scabbed over, and the exhaustion that had clung to her for days had begun to ease. Still, there was a quiet weight in her golden eyes when she looked at me.

"Do you think they can win?" she asked softly.

I didn’t answer right away. My mind turned over everything I had seen since arriving, the limited numbers, the reliance on cautious southern nobles, the way Veyra and Elandor watched me with different kinds of suspicion. At our current strength, the rebellion stood little chance against Grimgor’s full might. One major push from Blackfang Hold could scatter them. I knew that. But looking at Lira, at the hope she still carried despite everything she had lost, I couldn’t bring myself to crush it.

"We have a chance," I said at last. "And we’ll only get stronger. The more people who see that Grimgor can bleed, the more will stand with us. We’re not finished yet."

Lira studied my face for a long moment, then a small, tired smile curved her lips. "You always say it like you already know the ending."

"I don’t," I admitted. "But I’ve survived worse odds."

She shifted closer, her shoulder brushing mine. The soft fur of her ear tickled the side of my neck when she leaned in. "After all this... if we make it through... I think I’d like to settle somewhere quiet. Somewhere the fighting can’t reach. Maybe raise a family. Something simple."

I turned my head and found her already watching me. The lamp light caught the gold in her eyes and the faint flush rising across her cheeks. For a moment neither of us spoke. The air felt heavier, warmer.

Lira was the one who moved first. She leaned in and pressed her mouth to mine. The kiss was soft at first, almost hesitant, as if she was giving me the chance to pull away. I didn’t. My hand rose to the side of her face, thumb brushing the edge of her jaw, and I kissed her back. Her lips parted under mine. The taste of her was warm and faintly sweet. A low sound escaped her throat when my tongue met hers.

The kiss deepened. Her fingers curled into the front of my shirt, pulling me closer. I felt the soft press of her breasts against my chest, the way her body angled toward mine. My other hand slid down her side, careful of the still-healing burns, and settled at the curve of her waist. Her tail flicked once against my leg.

When we finally broke apart for air, her breathing was uneven. "Antoine..."

I didn’t answer with words. I kissed her again, slower this time, and guided her back until she lay against the thin mattress. I followed her down, bracing my weight on one forearm so I wouldn’t crush her. Her hands moved under my shirt, palms sliding over the scars on my chest and stomach. The touch sent heat racing under my skin.

I pulled my shirt off and tossed it aside. Lira’s eyes traveled over me, lingering on the old wounds and the newer ones that had only recently closed. There was no pity in her gaze—only want. She reached up and traced a long scar that ran across my ribs. I caught her wrist gently and kissed the inside of it.

Her own clothing came away piece by piece. The scavenged tunic, the soft bindings beneath, the worn trousers. I took my time, careful with the bandaged areas, kissing the uninjured skin of her collarbone, the slope of her shoulder, the soft underside of one breast. Her nipples tightened under my tongue. She arched when I closed my mouth around one, sucking gently, then harder when her fingers threaded into my hair and held me there.

"Antoine," she breathed again, voice lower now.

I moved lower, trailing open-mouthed kisses down the plane of her stomach. Her muscles jumped under my lips. When I reached the soft fur at the junction of her thighs, she parted them for me without being asked. The scent of her arousal was warm and musky. I settled between her legs and dragged my tongue slowly through her folds.

Lira’s hips lifted. A soft, broken sound left her. I licked again, slower, mapping the sensitive places that made her breath catch. When I found the small, swollen bud at the top of her sex, I circled it with the tip of my tongue, then sealed my lips around it and sucked gently. Her thighs trembled on either side of my head. One of her hands fisted in the bedding; the other stayed in my hair, guiding me without forcing.

I slid one finger inside her, then a second, curling them upward while I continued to work her with my mouth. She was wet and tight, clenching around my fingers with every slow thrust. Her breathing turned ragged. Soft, desperate noises spilled from her lips, my name mixed with half-formed pleas. I kept the rhythm steady until her back arched sharply and her inner walls pulsed hard around my fingers. She came with a quiet, shaking cry, thighs locking around my head for a moment before they relaxed.

I eased back and wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. Lira looked up at me, eyes half-lidded, cheeks flushed, lips parted. She reached for me, pulling me up until our mouths met again. The kiss was hungrier this time.

I shed the rest of my clothes. When I settled between her thighs again, the head of my cock brushed against her slick entrance. I paused, searching her face.

"Yes," she whispered. "Please."

I pushed in slowly. The heat of her body closed around me inch by inch. She was tight, still fluttering from her climax, and the sensation forced a low groan from my chest. Lira’s hands gripped my shoulders. Her legs wrapped around my waist, heels pressing into the small of my back, urging me deeper. When I was fully seated, I held still, giving her time to adjust. Her breath ghosted against my neck.

"Move," she said softly.

I did. Long, controlled strokes at first, pulling almost all the way out before sliding back in. The wet sound of our bodies meeting filled the small hut. Lira met every thrust, lifting her hips to take me deeper. Her fox ears lay flat against her hair. Soft moans left her with each roll of my hips.

I shifted the angle, bracing one hand beside her head and sliding the other beneath her lower back to tilt her hips higher. The new position made her gasp. I drove into her harder, the pace building. Sweat slicked our skin. The lamp light painted shifting shadows across the walls as we moved together.

Lira’s nails dug into my back. "Antoine—don’t stop—"

I didn’t. I fucked her with steady, deep thrusts, grinding against her on every inward stroke. Her second climax built faster than the first. I felt it in the way her body tightened around me, in the broken sounds she made against my shoulder. When she came again, her walls clenched hard, pulsing around my cock. The sensation dragged me over the edge with her. I buried myself deep and spilled inside her with a low, rough groan, hips jerking through the aftershocks.

We stayed like that for a long moment, breathing hard, bodies still joined. I rested my forehead against hers. Lira’s fingers traced lazy patterns along my spine. Her tail curled loosely around my calf.

Eventually I eased out of her and shifted to the side so I wouldn’t crush her. She turned with me, tucking herself against my chest. One of her ears brushed my jaw. I wrapped an arm around her waist, careful of the healing burns, and pulled her closer.

Neither of us spoke for a while. The only sounds were our slowing breaths and the distant night noises of the marsh.

Lira eventually lifted her head enough to look at me. Her golden eyes were soft, a little vulnerable. "I meant what I said earlier. About after. About wanting something quiet."

I brushed a strand of hair from her face. "I know."

She searched my expression. "Do you want that too? Or is the fight all there is for you?"

I didn’t answer right away. The truth was complicated. Part of me still lived for the next kill, the next level, the next step toward the empire I intended to build. But lying here with her warm against me, the sharp edges of that ambition felt a little less absolute.

"I want to survive long enough to find out," I said finally.

Lira smiled, small and real, and settled her head back against my chest. Her hand rested over my heart.

I closed my eyes and held her closer, listening to the steady rhythm of her breathing until sleep finally took us both.
