I woke before dawn, sleep had been light, sleeping on the cold floor with insects crawling around was a lot more difficult than I had thought. The others lay scattered around the makeshift camp in the outer hall, wrapped in scavenged cloaks and furs. Seventeen survivors now, it wasn’t much, but it was a start at least.
I rose quietly, grabbed my axe, and stepped into the pale morning light filtering through cracks in the ancient stone. The Kharadun Outpost looked different in daylight. It was a lot more worn than I remembered, dwarven craftsmanship still evident in the precise stonework and faded runes that glowed faintly along the walls. Vines choked the outer walls, but the structure still showed some promise.
A blue interface materialized at my command.

[Followers: 17 (Morale: Cautious)
Title Active: Breaker of Chains (Beginner) – +10% Intimidation vs. slavers, +5% Morale to followers]
I allocated the first improvements mentally. The system responded with a soft chime as resources shifted. The outer gate would come later; for now, basic traps and a watch rotation were priorities.
"Lira," I called as the fox-eared beastkin stirred. She approached, ears alert. "Scout the surrounding ridges and lower trails. Look for patrols, game, or anything useful, and stay hidden."
She nodded sharply. "I’ll be back by midday." Her tail flicked once before she vanished into the mist.
"Garrick," I continued. The old sergeant limped over, still favoring his branded shoulder. "Organize the survivors into work details. Clear debris from the courtyard, reinforce the barricades with what we have, and inventory every weapon and scrap. No one sits idle."
Garrick’s jaw tightened, he stared at me for a second but saluted out of old habit. "Aye."
I kept my eye on him. Something about him was off, and I didn’t like it one bit. But it wasn’t my top priority at the moment, surviving came first.
Elara hovered nearby, looking small amid the ruins. "What about me?"
"Help with inventory. Note anything that might be repaired or useful. And stay close to the others for now."
She brightened slightly and hurried after Garrick. Delegating felt strange but necessary. Before the work began in earnest, I gathered everyone near the small pyre we had built for the fallen. The three bodies.
"Last night, three of us died," I said, voice carrying across the group. My Breaker of Chains Title throbbed subtly, lending weight to my words. Faces turned toward me, some fearful, others resolute. "They were strong but weren’t strong enough. This world doesn’t reward weakness or mourning. It rewards those who learn from blood and keep moving. Honor them by surviving. By growing stronger. Their deaths buy us time and a lesson."
A few heads bowed, one woman wiped tears, but no one protested openly. The Title’s minor morale boost held them together. We lit the pyre. Flames rose, carrying the dead into whatever afterlife this brutal world offered..
Work began in full afterwards. I moved among the groups, correcting grips on tools and directing efforts. Garrick was efficient, barking orders like the sergeant he once was. By mid-morning, basic barricades rose and a training yard took shape in the cleared courtyard, nothing fancy, just open space marked by stones and wooden posts.
Lira returned as promised, breathing hard but unharmed. "Patrols are still sweeping the lower trails, but they’re disorganized. Grimgor’s men are angry. Also, there’s a small caravan route two days east. Lightly guarded supply wagons heading toward his stronghold. Could be a target if we’re bold."
My interest sharpened. A raid meant resources, weapons, and a chance to bleed the enemy. "Excellent work." I praised, as usual she was turning out to be a useful asset..
Elara approached during a break, clutching a small, dusty amulet she had found in the debris. "This was with the rations. It... hummed when I touched it."
I took it. A faint mana resonance. It looked like an amulet, or a charm. I handed it back to her, she needed it more than I did.
"Keep it, might be useful in the long run."
"Thank you." She clutched it tightly, eyes shining with determination.
As the sun climbed, I retreated to a quiet corner near the old forge with the Minor Mana Crystal, It was hightime i used it. I focused on my axe, willing the system to guide me.
[Crafting Attempt: Mana-Infused Weapon Enhancement]
[Success! Minor Mana Crystal consumed.]
[Iron Axe (Crude) → Enchanted Iron Axe (Low Grade)]
[Effect: +10% damage, minor mana edge (increased cutting power against armor)[
Satisfaction coursed through me as I examined the weapon in my hand. The axe now carried a faint blue glow along its edge, and looked a lot more refined than it did seconds ago. The system basically worked like magic.
The afternoon brought the training montage. I gathered the willing, about twelve strong, including Lira, Garrick, and Elara. I wasn’t exactly a great teacher, and trying to teach people who had zero martial art experience was definitely going to be a tasking job. But this was necessary, if we were going to survive, then they needed to know how to fight.
I took a deep breath then got to work. I demonstrated basic stances, footwork from my past-life martial arts, and how to channel intent into strikes.
They practiced in pairs. Sweat flew. Grunts and occasional cries of pain echoed. Garrick adapted quickly, his old training resurfacing. Lira’s agility made her a natural with the spear. Elara struggled but showed surprising resilience, landing a solid hit on a larger man through sheer will.
System notifications flickered for the group.
[Follower Training Session Successful]
[Group Morale +8%]
[Two followers have gained minor combat experience. Potential for future class unlocks.]
It was a good start, if things continued this way, perhaps we might just be able to get something out of this band of slaves.
As evening approached, Garrick found me sharpening the newly enchanted axe. His face set in a look I didn’t quite understand. "A word, Antoine."
I nodded, already sensing that he was about to say something annoying or stupid.
"You fight like the devil himself, and these people are following you because you give them results. But they need more than orders and cold speeches. They need hope. Training is good, but tell them why. Tell them what we’re actually building here, something worth bleeding for."
I met his gaze evenly, unsure if I should answer him or not. He was right, at this point these people were only following me because I had saved them. Sooner or later they would begin to question why they were really here. If i wanted to keep them, then it was probably best to tell them what I had in mind, what I intended to do.
"You’re right, it’s best they know what we’re actually fighting for. I want go build more than just a hiding camp. I want to build something more, an empire if you must, somewhere safe for all the humans being enslaved." I lowered my voice, letting the vision slip through. "Freedom is temporary, chains return unless you break the system that forges them. So taking down the forces that oppress us is also something necessary."
Garrick studied me for a long moment, probably thinking that I was a madman. Perhaps my small victory had gotten to my head, that was what he probably thought.
"That’s a very ambitious goal, and you hope to achieve that with a band of slaves?" He asked.
"I know it seems like a dream now, but it’s something I’m willing to try." I replied.
Lira, overhearing the tail end, smirked. "Empire, huh? I like the sound of that. My pack would’ve followed a leader like you."
I smiled at her, grateful that she saw the vision and didn’t think that I was completely out of my mind. "Thank you," I said before returning to cleaning my axe. Garrick didn’t leave immediately, he stared at me for another minute, before reluctantly turning and walking away.
As night fell, I reviewed the base status once more.
[Kharadun Outpost – Progress: Basic Fortification (62%)]
[Follower’s Morale: Steady]
I had also earned enough experience from training oversight and minor tasks to push forward.
[Level Up! You have reached Level 4.]
[HP and Stamina increased. +5 Attribute Points available.]
[Total XP: 89/500]
I allocated three points to Strength, one to Agility, and one to Perception. If I wanted to really build an empire, then I needed as much strength as I could. There was also the fact that the people here weren’t too strong either. I considered raiding the caravan Lira had mentioned earlier, but then again, it meant losing more valuable followers.
Before I could finalize the plan, shouts came from the outer watch. Garrick and two others dragged in a wounded orc scout they had captured trying to sneak close to the ruins.
The orc snarled through broken teeth as they bound him. "You... the Slave Who Killed Karg. Lord Grimgor has put a bounty on your head. Hundred gold and a slave harem for whoever brings him your corpse.."
Without wasting another second, I raised my axe and took his head.
[You have slain Level 2 Orc Scout. +4 XP]
Murmurs erupted from the onlookers in an instant, and Garrick stepped to my side.
"That was harsh, we could have gotten more information out of him—"
"And risk the others tracking him here?" I interjected swiftly. He stared at me with a defiant look, then backed away. I cleaned my axe on the orc’s corpse then turned to the group.
"Rest tonight," I told them, as the orc was dragged away for disposal "Tomorrow, we prepare, we will raid them like they did us, take what they stole from us, and show them that we’re done hiding!"
"YEAHHHH!!!" They all chorused in joy before slowly disbanding.
The decision was set. stay and build the foundation stronger, but launch the first proactive raid soon. Grimgor’s bounty meant time was short, but it also meant that word was spreading. With time people will hear of my name and the empire I was building.
