Dumbfounded and unable to comprehend, Ascalon froze on the spot.
Still, thanks to Lucifer’s nonsensical stunt, she was no longer as guarded as she had been a moment ago.
See?
Pure intellect.
However, the atmosphere was gradually growing a bit awkward.
Just as Lucifer was preparing to rely on his world-shaking intellect once again to break the ice, the sound of footsteps echoed from down the hallway.
“Ah, Lucifer, Ascalon.
We were just looking for you.”
Theresa and Theresis walked up side by side, and behind them was a Sarkaz boy who looked to be around the same age as Ascalon.
He had blonde hair and seemed to be a child under the care of the Military Commission.
But compared to Ascalon, who was a wild child from the wastes, this golden-haired Sarkaz boy seemed a bit timid and socially anxious.
Upon seeing Theresis and Theresa, Ascalon finally let down her guard, shuffling over toward them.
In this unfamiliar place, the royal siblings were among the very few people who could make her feel safe.
Looking at Ascalon’s subtle expression, Theresa felt a little embarrassed to break the news to her.
She gently stroked the back of Ascalon’s head, lost in thought.
This only made the atmosphere feel a bit more awkward.
Theresis cleared his throat.
Only then did Theresa snap out of it.
“Right…
Well, Lucifer, we actually called you over today because there’s a special task we’d like to entrust to you.”
“I’m all ears.”
Lucifer tucked his blood-wine back into his coat, looking every bit the submissive corporate slave waiting for his boss’s orders.
Theresa gently nudged Ascalon and the blonde boy forward.
“Theresis and I have been really busy lately, so we were hoping you could help babysit these two kids, Ascalon and Manfred.”
“?”
A giant question mark popped up over Lucifer’s head.
Did he look like someone who could handle kids?
Were they absolutely sure he wouldn’t leave them with lifelong PTSD?
Theresa seemed to have anticipated Lucifer’s concerns, quickly adding:
“Don’t worry, they’re both very resilient children.
Think of it as a warm-up training for them, how about it?”
“Well, true, but…
wouldn’t it be better to ask the King of the Scavengers?”
Even Theresa and Theresis had been trained by the King of the Scavengers.
Wouldn’t babysitting two kids be a complete piece of cake for him?
“Well, the old man has other matters to attend to, and Ramaelian has her own work.”
Lucifer got the message.
They were basically calling him out for being the slacker with the most free time.
“I recall the Sanguinarch has nothing to do right now either, why not ask—never mind, forget I said anything.”
Lucifer hesitated.
He imagined a timeline where the Sanguinarch had two crazy disciples, and he couldn’t help but shiver.
Thinking it over, it seemed Lucifer really was the only one with both the ability and the time to play babysitter.
On the other side, both Ascalon and Manfred felt a bit resistant upon hearing that they were going to be dumped onto some shady, unknown Vampire.
Manfred aside, Ascalon—who had just been sweating bullets from Lucifer’s presence—felt extremely conflicted.
They still preferred to be trained by Theresa or Theresis.
Seeing himself being rejected like this, Lucifer got irritated.
Oh, they liked Theresa and Theresis that much?
Well, now he just had to steal their affection!
“Now, now, Lucifer isn’t like the other Sanguines.
You mustn’t judge him by stereotypes.
Besides, he’s not any weaker than Theresis or me.”
Comforted by Theresa’s words, Ascalon and Manfred finally accepted their fate.
If Lucifer really was as powerful as Theresa claimed, then learning under him wouldn’t be so bad.
“Well then, I’ll leave them in your care, Lucifer.”
Theresa clasped her hands together, flashing a warm, heart-melting smile.
Theresis, who had been standing beside her playing the silent expert, finally spoke up.
“I hope you can train them into capable warriors.”
“I got you, bro.”
