Jiu Lan remained on the platform after the medical crew carried Chen Huo away. The cheers had not fully faded. Her breathing was steady. The thin blade in her hand felt lighter than it had at the start of the match. Confidence sat in her chest now, solid and warm.

The announcer’s voice carried across the arena. “Jiu Lan is the victor! Challenger, do you wish to face another opponent, or shall we open the floor to volunteers?”

She turned toward the seating area reserved for the Shi Clan. Her green eyes found the young woman the crowd had been talking about all morning. Shi Mei sat with quiet composure, silver-black hair falling neatly over one shoulder, her posture relaxed in a way that only came from real strength.Full novel: Rise of the Blood Monarch [Isekai - Cultivation - Xianxia] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Jiu Lan raised her blade slightly. “I challenge Shi Mei.”

The arena went still for a heartbeat, then exploded into noise.

“She just beat a rank five and now she wants Shi Mei?”

“That girl has no sense of her own limits.”

“Shi Mei is rank nine. This will not last long.”

In the Lu Clan section, Jiu Yin leaned forward. “Good,” he said under his breath. “If you are going to lose, lose against someone worth losing to.”

Jiu Ping’s hands tightened in her lap, but she did not stop her daughter.

Shi Mei rose without hurry. She stepped down from her seat and crossed the platform with the same calm grace the earlier match had shown. When she reached the center, she bowed first.

“You fought well against Chen Huo,” Shi Mei said. Her voice was even and clear. “I accept.”

Jiu Lan bowed in return. “I want to see the difference with my own eyes.”

The announcer called the match. The crowd leaned in.

Shi Mei drew a slender sword. Pale blue Qi gathered along the edge, not roaring like Chen Huo’s fire, but flowing in a thin, controlled line. Jiu Lan circulated her Moonlight Qi. A faint silvery glow gathered along her own blade.

Shi Mei moved first.

She did not charge. She stepped in with a short, clean thrust aimed at Jiu Lan’s shoulder. Jiu Lan turned the strike aside and answered with a cut toward Shi Mei’s wrist. The two blades met with a sharp ring. The force that came back through Jiu Lan’s arms surprised her. Shi Mei’s cultivation sat far above her own. Every contact carried weight.

Shi Mei pressed immediately. Her sword moved in tight, efficient arcs. Jiu Lan gave ground, circling, using the same slipping footwork that had worn Chen Huo down. She cut once at Shi Mei’s sleeve and opened a shallow line of cloth, but no blood. Shi Mei’s response was a low sweep that forced Jiu Lan to leap back. The tip of Shi Mei’s sword kissed the edge of her robe.

The crowd murmured.

“She’s lasting.”

“Shi Mei is holding back.”

Jiu Lan felt that too. Shi Mei was not fighting at full force. Even so, the pressure did not ease. Jiu Lan darted in again, moonlight Qi flashing along her blade as she aimed for Shi Mei’s exposed side. Shi Mei turned the cut with the flat of her sword and stepped inside Jiu Lan’s reach. A palm strike, wrapped in pale Qi, landed against Jiu Lan’s ribs.

Pain bloomed. Air left her lungs. She staggered two steps and barely raised her blade in time to stop the follow-up slash. The impact rattled her teeth.

She did not fall.

She reset her stance and came forward again. This time she changed rhythm, feinting high and cutting low. The blade scored a thin line across Shi Mei’s forearm. First blood.

A ripple went through the stands.

Shi Mei looked down at the cut, then back at Jiu Lan. There was no anger in her face. Only a sharper focus.

“Good,” Shi Mei said.

The next exchange was faster. Shi Mei’s sword became a blur of pale light. Jiu Lan blocked, slipped, and answered where she could. Another shallow cut opened on Shi Mei’s shoulder. In return Jiu Lan took a strike across her upper arm that burned like ice and fire at once. Blood ran warm down her sleeve. Her breath grew heavier. Her Moonlight Qi still moved, but it was thinner now, stretched by the gap in rank.

Shi Mei advanced without wasted motion. Each step closed the space Jiu Lan needed to work. Jiu Lan tried one last sequence, a circling cut meant to create an opening at the neck. Shi Mei read it, stepped through it, and set her sword against Jiu Lan’s throat.

The point did not pierce skin. It simply stopped there, steady and undeniable.

The arena went quiet.

Shi Mei lowered her blade first. “You forced two cuts on me. That is more than most at your rank manage.”

Jiu Lan’s chest rose and fell hard. Sweat ran along her temple. She lowered her own blade and bowed, deeper this time.

“Thank you for the match. I see the distance clearly now.”

Shi Mei returned the bow. “Then close it. The Jiu name is not finished.”

The announcer declared Shi Mei the winner. The crowd broke into mixed noise. Some praised Jiu Lan for lasting as long as she had. Others said the result had never been in doubt. A few voices from the Jade Valley section sounded interested rather than dismissive.

From the viewing platform, the Jade Valley observer spoke first, her tone refined and cool. “Her Moonlight flow is incomplete, but the instinct is correct. She does not panic when overpowered.”

The Thousand Peaks observer let out a short laugh. “Not enough meat on the bones for my taste. Still, she kept standing. That counts.”

The Crimson Moon observer said nothing. His eyes moved from Jiu Lan to Jiu Yin and stayed there a moment longer than necessary.

Jiu Lan walked back toward her family. Her arm stung. Her pride did not. Jiu Ping rose and wrapped a cloth around the cut without a word. Jiu Yin watched her with that same unreadable calm.

“You did what you came to do,” he said.

Jiu Lan sat down, blade across her knees, and looked back at the platform. Shi Mei had already returned to her seat as if the fight had been only a brief pause in her day.

Jiu Lan’s green eyes stayed on her.

Next time, she thought, the distance would be smaller.
