Three knocks.

Then silence.

Nobody moved.

Captain Elias Wren stood directly in front of the reinforced doors.

His sword was raised.

Behind him, six royal guards held the corridor.

General Roderick Vale stood farther back, one hand pressed against the wound along his side.

King Kael Asterion stood beside the royal family.

His sword remained in his hand.

Queen Elizabeth Asterion held Caelan’s hand.

Finn Arden stood near Dr.

Elara Voss, still gripping the spear he had picked up earlier.

Grand Chancellor Adrian Valeris had moved away from the door.

Lucian Varek stood near the secondary passage.

Seraphine Aster watched everyone.

Gareth Rowan guarded the opposite side of the corridor.

Nobody knew who had knocked.

That was the problem.

Elias raised his voice.

“Identify yourself.”

Nothing.

He waited.

Again.

“Identify yourself!”

Still nothing.

One of the guards looked at him.

“Captain?”

Elias lifted a hand.

Wait.

Then—

A voice came from the other side.

“Captain Wren.”

Elias’s eyes narrowed.

He recognized it.

Sergeant Halric Dane.

A royal guard.

“How many?”

“Four.”

“Names.”

A pause.

Then the voice answered.

“Halric Dane. Tomas Pell. Martin Oren. Jace Venn.”

Elias looked at the guards.

The names were correct.

He knew all four.

But his hand did not lower.

“Step away from the door.”

Nothing.

“Sergeant?”

A voice came again.

“Captain, we’ve got wounded.”

Elias looked toward Kael.

The king’s eyes met his.

Neither spoke.

Then Kael gave a small nod.

Elias approached the door.

“Open it slowly.”

Two guards released the first locking bar.

Then the second.

The heavy door moved inward.

Only a few inches.

A hand appeared.

Blood covered the sleeve.

“Help us.”

One of the guards reached forward.

Elias suddenly saw something.

The hand was wearing a royal guard ring.

But the ring was on the wrong finger.

“STOP!”

The door slammed shut.

A blade punched through the wood.

The guard closest to it screamed.

The entire corridor erupted.

“BACK!”

Elias shoved the wounded guard away as another blade broke through.

Then—

The door exploded inward.

Wood splintered across the corridor.

Three men rushed through.

The first swung at Elias.

Elias blocked.

The second drove into the guards.

The third ran directly toward the king.

Kael moved.

1:51 AM

The king intercepted him.

Steel struck steel.

The assassin’s blade was stopped inches from Caelan.

Kael pushed forward.

The assassin stumbled.

Caelan stared.

His father was between him and death.

Again.

“Stay back!”

Kael’s voice was absolute.

Caelan obeyed.

For once, there was no argument.

The corridor became chaos.

Royal guards clashed with the intruders.

A spear struck one attacker’s shoulder.

Another assassin kicked the weapon away.

Elias fought two men at once.

Roderick stepped forward despite his wound.

“General!”

Elias shouted.

“I’ve got this!”

Roderick ignored him.

He struck an attacker across the jaw.

The man crashed against the wall.

Roderick grabbed him.

“Who sent you?”

The attacker spat blood.

No answer.

Roderick hit him again.

“Who sent you?”

Still nothing.

Then another assassin came from behind.

Roderick turned too late.

Kael saw him.

“Roderick!”

Kael threw himself between them.

The blade missed Roderick’s chest.

It cut deeply across Kael’s shoulder.

Blood sprayed across the stone.

Roderick froze.

“Your Majesty!”

Kael staggered.

Then steadied himself.

“Fight.”

Roderick stared at him.

“Fight!”

Roderick turned and attacked.

Kael remained standing.

Barely.

Elizabeth saw the blood.

“Kael.”

“I’m fine.”

She knew he was lying.

She knew him too well.

1:53 AM

Caelan could not move.

His father’s blood had already reached the floor.

A dark line ran between the stones.

Caelan stared at it.

The palace smelled of smoke, metal and blood.

Everything had become painfully clear.

His father had been wounded.

Not in training.

Not in a controlled demonstration.

Not in some story from history.

Here.

Tonight.

Because someone had come into their home with a sword.

“Caelan.”

Elizabeth’s hand closed around his.

He looked at her.

“Don’t.”

She stepped in front of him.

“Look at me.”

Caelan did.

“He’s still standing.”

His eyes moved toward Kael.

His father was fighting.

Wounded.

Breathing heavily.

But fighting.

Caelan nodded.

“He’ll be fine.”

Elizabeth did not answer.

She could not make that promise.

1:55 AM

The battle shifted toward the eastern corridor.

The royal guards were slowly gaining control.

One attacker fell.

Another fled through a broken doorway.

Elias pursued him.

“Don’t let him reach the inner passage!”

Two guards followed.

Gareth Rowan moved toward the king.

“Your Majesty.”

Kael looked at him.

“Protect the prince.”

Gareth hesitated.

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Kael looked toward Caelan.

For a moment, father and son stared at one another.

Caelan saw the exhaustion in his father’s face.

He saw blood on his clothes.

He saw the sword still held firmly in his hand.

Kael gave him the smallest nod.

Not goodbye.

Not yet.

A reminder.

Stand.

Caelan straightened.

1:57 AM

Seraphine Aster reached the corridor.

She stopped when she saw Kael.

Her expression changed.

“Your Majesty.”

“I’m alive.”

Seraphine looked around.

“How many attackers?”

“Unknown.”

“Where are they?”

“Some have withdrawn toward the lower passages.”

Seraphine’s eyes moved toward the broken door.

Then toward the floor.

She crouched.

Blood.

Footprints.

Broken wood.

A torn piece of dark fabric.

She picked it up.

No insignia.

Nothing identifying.

“Director.”

Seraphine looked at the guard beside her.

“What?”

“Another passage has been opened.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

“Behind the old storage chamber.”

Seraphine immediately stood.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

She looked toward Kael.

The king understood.

“They are still inside.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Then find them.”

Seraphine nodded.

She turned.

Then stopped.

“Your Majesty.”

Kael looked at her.

“If you are wounded—”

“I know.”

Seraphine left.

1:59 AM

Elara Voss finally reached Kael.

“Let me see the wound.”

Kael stepped back.

“It’s manageable.”

Elara’s expression hardened.

“That is not your decision.”

Kael looked at her.

“I am the king.”

“And I am the physician.”

For one second, nobody spoke.

Then Elizabeth almost smiled despite herself.

“She’s right.”

Kael sighed.

“Fine.”

Elara examined the shoulder.

Her face became serious.

“The cut is deep.”

“How deep?”

“Deep enough that you should not be holding a sword.”

Kael looked toward the battle.

“Then I’ll hold it with the other hand.”

Elara stared at him.

“Your Majesty.”

Kael’s expression softened.

“Doctor.”

She knew that look.

The king had made his decision.

“At least let me stop the bleeding.”

“Do it.”

Elara pressed cloth against the wound.

Kael winced.

Caelan noticed.

His father rarely showed pain.

That frightened him more than the blood.

2:01 AM

The attack came again.

Not from the broken doors.

From above.

A section of the ceiling collapsed.

Stone and wood crashed into the corridor.

Everyone scattered.

Caelan was thrown backward.

“Caelan!”

Elizabeth caught him.

Dust filled the air.

A guard screamed as a piece of timber struck his leg.

Gareth pulled him away.

“Move!”

The floor was covered with debris.

Kael turned.

“Everyone back!”

A figure dropped from the opening.

Kael raised his sword.

The assassin landed hard.

For half a second, neither moved.

Then Kael attacked.

The assassin blocked.

The king struck again.

And again.

His wounded shoulder slowed him.

The assassin noticed.

He changed his angle.

Kael blocked.

The blade slid across his armor.

Kael countered.

The assassin stepped back.

Roderick entered the fight.

“Your Majesty, let me take him.”

“No.”

Kael attacked again.

Roderick understood.

This was not pride.

Kael was protecting his family.

The assassin lunged.

Kael twisted.

The blade passed his ribs.

Kael struck the assassin across the chest.

The man fell.

His mask cracked.

For a moment, Caelan saw part of his face.

A young man.

Perhaps thirty.

Perhaps younger.

Not a monster.

Not some inhuman creature.

Just a human face.

Blood ran from his mouth.

He looked at Kael.

Then smiled.

Kael’s expression changed.

The assassin moved his hand.

Something small flashed between his fingers.

Seraphine shouted.

“YOUR MAJESTY!”

Kael turned.

The assassin threw the object.

It struck the floor.

A sharp burst of smoke filled the corridor.

2:03 AM

Caelan heard his mother scream.

Then steel.

Then his father’s voice.

“ELIZABETH!”

Caelan pushed through the smoke.

He saw almost nothing.

Shapes moved.

Someone collided with him.

He fell.

Gareth grabbed him.

“Your Highness!”

“Father!”

“Stay down!”

“Where is he?”

“Your father is—”

A blade flashed through the smoke.

Gareth blocked it.

The impact drove him backward.

Caelan crawled away.

Then the smoke began to clear.

Slowly.

The corridor appeared again.

Kael was standing.

But something was wrong.

His sword had fallen from his hand.

His eyes were wide.

He looked down.

A blade protruded from beneath his ribs.

For one second, nobody moved.

The assassin stood behind him.

Blood covered the king’s clothes.

Caelan stared.

“No.”

The assassin pulled the blade free.

Kael dropped to one knee.

“FATHER!”

Caelan ran.

Elizabeth caught him.

“Caelan!”

He fought against her grip.

“Let me go!”

Kael collapsed.

2:04 AM

Everything became noise.

“GET THE KING!”

“Kill the assassin!”

“Protect the prince!”

“Medical team!”

“Move!”

Gareth attacked the assassin.

Their swords collided.

Roderick struck from the side.

The assassin barely escaped.

Elias arrived.

He drove his blade forward.

The assassin blocked.

Three royal guards surrounded him.

There was nowhere to run.

The assassin looked toward the king.

Then toward the royal family.

He did not speak.

Roderick struck.

The assassin fell.

The fight ended.

But nobody celebrated.

Because Kael was on the floor.

And the blood beneath him was spreading.

2:05 AM

Elara dropped beside him.

“Move.”

Nobody argued.

She pressed both hands against the wound.

“Your Majesty.”

Kael opened his eyes.

“Elizabeth.”

“I’m here.”

She knelt beside him.

Caelan stood frozen.

His father’s eyes found him.

“Caelan.”

The prince dropped to his knees.

“Father.”

Kael tried to breathe.

Pain crossed his face.

Elara looked at the wound.

Her expression changed.

Caelan saw it.

He knew.

“No.”

Elara did not look at him.

“Stay with me, Your Majesty.”

Kael gave a weak smile.

“Still giving orders?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

His breathing became uneven.

Elizabeth took his hand.

“Kael.”

He looked at her.

“I promised.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You promised to come back.”

“I know.”

“Then come back.”

Kael closed his eyes for a moment.

Elara pressed harder.

“Stay awake.”

Kael opened them again.

He looked at Elizabeth.

Then Caelan.

His son was crying.

Kael had seen Caelan injured.

Angry.

Frustrated.

Confused.

He had never seen him like this.

Kael lifted his hand.

It trembled.

Caelan grabbed it.

“I’m here.”

Kael’s fingers closed weakly around his son’s.

“Listen.”

Caelan shook his head.

“No.”

“Listen.”

“Father—”

“Listen.”

Caelan forced himself to nod.

Kael struggled for breath.

“You will survive.”

Caelan’s tears fell.

“I don’t want to survive without you.”

Kael’s eyes softened.

“You won’t be without me.”

Caelan looked at him.

Kael’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“You carry what I taught you.”

He paused.

“Not my mistakes.”

Caelan’s face crumpled.

“I can’t do this.”

Kael squeezed his hand.

“Yes.”

Another breath.

“You can.”

2:07 AM

Elizabeth leaned closer.

For the first time that night, the king seemed completely exhausted.

Not politically.

Not physically.

Completely.

“Elizabeth.”

“I’m here.”

“I love you.”

She pressed his hand against her cheek.

“I love you too.”

Kael looked toward Caelan.

“Take care of him.”

Elizabeth nodded.

“I will.”

Kael’s eyes moved back to his son.

“Be better than me.”

Caelan shook his head.

“No.”

Kael almost smiled.

“You don’t have to become me.”

His breathing weakened.

“Become yourself.”

Caelan could barely speak.

“Father…”

Kael looked at him one last time.

Then his eyes closed.

Elara continued pressing against the wound.

“Your Majesty.”

No response.

“Kael.”

Elizabeth’s voice broke.

She touched his face.

“Kael.”

Nothing.

Elara checked his pulse.

Her fingers remained there.

One second.

Two.

Three.

She checked again.

Then she slowly lowered her hand.

The room became silent.

Dr.

Elara Voss looked at Queen Elizabeth.

Her eyes were wet.

She shook her head.

Elizabeth stared at her.

“No.”

Elara swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Elizabeth looked down.

Kael Asterion was still.

The king of Vaeloria was dead.

2:09 AM

Caelan did not understand the silence.

The palace had been screaming moments earlier.

Now nobody spoke.

His father lay motionless on the stone.

Caelan touched his hand.

Cold.

Not completely cold.

But already different.

“Father?”

Nothing.

He shook his hand gently.

“Father.”

Nothing.

He looked at Elara.

“Wake him.”

She said nothing.

“Doctor.”

Elara closed her eyes.

“Caelan…”

“Wake him.”

His voice broke.

“Please.”

Elara knelt beside him.

She placed one hand on his shoulder.

“There is nothing more I can do.”

Caelan stared at her.

He looked back at his father.

The man who had taught him how to hold a sword.

How to study a map.

How to question reports.

How to listen.

How to decide.

How to accept responsibility.

His father was gone.

And the world had not stopped.

2:12 AM

Outside the royal wing, the palace continued moving.

Wounded guards were carried toward the medical rooms.

Servants were locked inside secured quarters.

Royal soldiers searched corridors.

Officials shouted instructions.

Doors were reinforced.

The dead were counted.

The living were treated.

The attack was not over.

But inside the royal chamber, time seemed to have stopped.

General Roderick Vale stood several steps from Kael’s body.

Blood covered his own clothes.

He stared at his king.

The man he had served for years.

The man who had trained him.

The man who had trusted him.

Roderick lowered his sword.

Then dropped to one knee.

“Your Majesty.”

His voice was barely audible.

Elias Wren stood beside him.

His face was pale.

He had failed to keep the king alive.

That thought would remain with him for the rest of his life.

Gareth Rowan stood near the doorway.

His sword was still raised.

But his eyes were fixed on Kael.

Adrian Valeris arrived moments later.

He stopped.

He saw the king.

Then Caelan.

Then Elizabeth.

The Grand Chancellor removed his gloves.

He bowed his head.

Not as an official.

As a man.

“May the gods receive him.”

Lucian Varek stood behind him.

He said nothing.

He simply turned toward the guards.

“Double the inner perimeter.”

His voice was steady.

Barely.

Because someone still had to keep the kingdom functioning.

2:16 AM

Seraphine entered.

The assassin was dead.

She had seen the body.

She had seen the weapon.

She had seen the damage.

But none of it mattered now.

She looked at Kael.

Then at Elizabeth.

Then Caelan.

Her eyes hardened.

“Your Majesty…”

Elizabeth did not respond.

Seraphine turned toward the guards.

“Secure the body.”

Caelan looked up sharply.

“No.”

Everyone stopped.

Seraphine looked at him.

Caelan’s eyes were red.

“Nobody touches him.”

Seraphine lowered her head.

“Understood.”

Caelan looked at his father again.

He did not want him moved.

Not yet.

He was not ready to accept that the body on the floor was no longer the father who had walked beside him yesterday morning.

2:20 AM

The eastern corridor was secured.

The western passage was being searched.

The lower service corridors remained under investigation.

The surviving attackers had either been killed, captured or disappeared into the palace’s old passages.

No mastermind had been identified.

No political faction had claimed responsibility.

No kingdom had declared war.

No explanation existed.

Only blood.

And one dead king.

Queen Elizabeth sat beside Kael.

She had stopped crying.

That frightened Caelan more than her tears.

She gently brushed his father’s hair away from his forehead.

Caelan sat beside her.

Neither spoke.

Across the room, Finn stood with his head lowered.

He had known Caelan since childhood.

He had known Kael as the king.

But tonight he had watched his friend’s father die.

He looked at Caelan.

There was nothing he could say.

So he simply walked over and sat nearby.

Not as a servant.

As a friend.

Elara continued treating wounded guards outside the room.

Roderick refused treatment until every injured soldier had been accounted for.

Elias remained at the door.

Gareth stood beside him.

Adrian and Lucian were already rebuilding order from the chaos.

Seraphine disappeared into the palace again.

The kingdom had lost its king.

But the palace still had work to do.

2:25 AM

Caelan looked at the clock.

He remembered the time.

1:50.

Only thirty-five minutes ago.

His father had been alive.

Thirty-five minutes.

That was all.

Yesterday, Kael had stood in the garden telling him that whatever happened, he would always be his father.

Tonight, those words had become something different.

A memory.

Caelan looked toward the window.

Outside, the first faint hint of dawn remained far away.

The capital was still sleeping.

People were still unaware.

Some would wake tomorrow and complain about taxes.

Some would open their shops.

Some would take carts toward the markets.

Some would send children to work.

Some would wait for soldiers to return.

And when the sun rose— they would learn that their king was dead.

Caelan looked at his father.

Then at his mother.

Then at the people gathered around them.

The palace had changed.

Vaeloria had changed.

And somewhere beneath the grief, beneath the fear, beneath the blood still staining the floor— something else had begun.

The Crown had lost its king.

But the kingdom still needed one.

And Caelan Asterion was still eighteen years old.

He was still a son.

Still a prince.

Still grieving.

But the empty space beside his father’s body was already beginning to point toward the throne.

Not tonight.

Not yet.

For this moment, he was simply a son holding his dead father’s hand.

Outside, another guard began walking his midnight-to-dawn patrol.

His boots passed over the bloodstained stone.

He looked down.

Stopped.

Then continued.

Because the palace was wounded.

The kingdom was wounded.

But neither had stopped breathing.

The King had fallen.

The Crown remained.
