The first System Enforcer didn’t scream. It didn’t even make a sound as it blurred across the iron-gridded floor, its red erasing blade leaving a trail of static in the air.
Kai! On your right! Leo shouted.
Leo didn’t wait for a response. He raised his wrist, and the glowing screen on his arm projected a solid, hexagonal barrier of orange light. The Enforcer’s blade slammed into the shield, sending sparks of raw data flying in every direction. The impact was heavy, but Leo didn’t budge. His form was solid, reinforced by the new rules of the Rebellion.
Nice shield, Leo, Kai said, his voice cold and focused. Now, let me show you the new edge.
Kai drew Sunbringer. The blade was no longer just red; it was a vibrating shard of crimson energy, humming at a frequency that made the very air around it distort. He didn’t lunge like a knight. He moved like a glitch in the frame.
Narrative Authority: Frame Skip!
In a fraction of a second, Kai was behind the Enforcer. He didn’t swing for the neck. He drove the crimson blade into the Enforcer’s back, right where the power core pulsed with red light.
[Alert: System Enforcer Terminated. Experience Gained: 5000 XP.]
[Current Screen Time: 900 Hours -> 895 Hours.]
The Enforcer dissolved into a pile of red pixels, disappearing into the dark iron floor.
Two more! Clara cried out.
She stood back, her silver rod spinning in her hand. She pointed it at the approaching Enforcers, and instead of a slow fireball, a beam of concentrated silver data erupted from the tip. It hit the lead Enforcer in the chest, freezing it in a block of silver code.
"Leo, smash it!" Clara commanded.
Leo roared, his fist glowing with orange energy as he delivered a devastating blow to the frozen Enforcer. The creature shattered into a thousand silver shards.
"The third one is mine," Kai said.
He didn’t even look at the last Enforcer. He just raised his left hand and snapped his fingers.
"Narrative Authority: Force Quit."
[Current Screen Time: 895 Hours -> 885 Hours.]
The Enforcer stopped mid-lunge. Its red eyes flickered, its body began to shake, and then it simply vanished, leaving nothing but a faint smell of ozone behind.
"That was... efficient," Leo said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "But Kai, look at the tower. They’re coming out in droves."
Kai looked toward the Spire of Light. Hundreds of red dots were descending from the upper levels—an army of Enforcers sent to wipe out the glitch.
"We can’t fight them all here," Clara said, her silver rod humming. "We need cover."
"This way!" a new voice shouted from a nearby alleyway.
A girl wearing a hooded cloak made of shifting camouflage stood in the shadows. Her eyes glowed with a bright green light, and she held a device that looked like a cross between a crossbow and a computer terminal.
"Who are you?" Kai asked, his sword still ready.
"I’m the one who’s been waiting for the Genre Shift," she said, her voice sharp. "Call me ’Patch.’ Now move, before the Editor sends a ’Patch-Fix’ to delete this entire block!"
They followed her into the narrow alleyways. The city was a maze of iron pipes and glowing neon signs that advertised things like ’Free Will’ and ’No More Prophecies.’ The frozen people Kai had seen earlier were now fully awake, scurrying into buildings and preparing for war.
"Where are you taking us?" Leo asked, his orange shield still active.
"To the ’Under-Script,’" Patch said, leading them down a flight of stairs into a massive underground chamber. "It’s a place the Publisher hasn’t indexed yet. It’s where we’ve been hiding since the first volume."
The chamber was filled with dozens of people. Some were knights in rusted armor, others were mages in torn robes, and some were modern-looking rebels like Patch. They all had one thing in common: their Script Lines were broken or missing.
"You’re the one," an old man in a tattered scholar’s robe said, stepping forward. "The one who broke the Architect."
"I’m the one who’s trying to stay alive," Kai said, sheathing his sword.
"Elias Thorne was a child playing with toys," the scholar said, his voice grave. "The Publisher... the one who owns the Spire... he is a businessman. And business is bad right now because of you."
"Good," Kai said. "I want him to feel the loss."
Patch turned to Kai, her green eyes scanning his Screen Time meter. "You’ve got a lot of time, but you’re burning it fast. Every ’Narrative Authority’ command you use is a direct hit to your existence. If you hit zero, not even a Genre Shift can save you."
"I know the price," Kai said. "Tell me how to get into the Spire."
Patch laughed, a bitter sound. "You don’t get into the Spire. The Spire gets into you. It’s the source of the Narrative Gravity. If you want to reach the Publisher, you have to climb the ’Ranking Ladder.’"
"The Ranking Ladder?" Leo asked.
"In the Rebellion genre, the Audience decides who gets to the top," Patch explained. "You need ’Engagement Points.’ You need to do something so big, so loud, that the Publisher is forced to invite you to the final floor just to negotiate a ’Series Finale.’"
"What could be bigger than turning the First Apostle into a rabbit?" Clara asked.
"That was a good start," Patch said, pointing to a massive screen on the wall. "But look at the ratings. The Audience is already getting bored of the ’Escape’ arc. They want ’Invasion.’ They want to see you take back the Southern Gate that the Editor just deleted."
Kai looked at the screen. The ratings were dipping. The Audience was fickle. They wanted blood and high stakes.
"Then we give them an invasion," Kai said, his eyes glowing with a dark resolve. "Leo, Clara, get ready. We’re not hiding anymore."
"Wait!" Patch said, grabbing Kai’s arm. "You can’t just walk out there. The Editor has deployed the ’Beta-Testers.’ They’re characters from other stories that were canceled. They’re hungry, they’re desperate, and they’ve been promised a role in the new Script if they kill you."
"Beta-Testers?" Leo asked, his voice shaking slightly.
"Fallen Heroes from other genres," Kai whispered, his mind racing. "The Publisher is using his back-catalog to clean house."
Suddenly, the roof of the underground chamber exploded. A man in samurai armor, his body made of flickering blue flames, descended through the hole. He held a katana that dripped with freezing data.
[Entity: The Ronin of the Lost Arc - Level 60.]
[Objective: Collect the Glitch’s Bounty.]
"The Publisher sends his regards," the Ronin said, his voice a distorted electronic hum.
Kai drew Sunbringer, the crimson light reflecting in his eyes.
"Patch, get the others to safety," Kai commanded. "Leo, Clara, stay behind me. This isn’t a System Enforcer. This is a Main Character."
The Ronin moved, and for the first time, Kai couldn’t see the movement. The blue blade was at his throat before he could even blink.
"Narrative Authority: Counter-Edit!" Kai screamed.
[Current Screen Time: 885 Hours -> 835 Hours.]
The blue blade hit a red wall of text, the impact shaking the entire underground chamber. The Ronin pushed back, his blue flames roaring.
"You are strong, Glitch," the Ronin said. "But your story has already been canceled. You just haven’t realized it yet."
"My story is just getting a reboot," Kai said, his sword pushing back against the katana. "And you’re the first villain of the new season."
Kai kicked the Ronin back and lunged, the crimson blade vibrating with a lethal intensity. The fight for the new world had truly begun.
