The silence that followed Long Chen’s defeat was not peaceful. It was the heavy, pressurized silence of a system reaching its breaking point. The thousands of disciples who had been kneeling were now scrambling backward, their faces pale with a terror that surpassed their fear of the Sect Leader.

Above them, the sky was no longer purple or gold. It was flickering between a dull, unrendered gray and a blinding, static white. The red warning sign that only Kai could see was pulsing faster now, casting an eerie glow over the broken plaza.

"Kai, look!" Clara pointed toward the horizon.Full novel: Role Stealer: The Script Executioner — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The mountains were disappearing. Not crumbling, not falling—they were being erased. A massive, vertical line of black static was sweeping across the landscape, leaving nothing behind but a white, empty void. No trees, no rocks, no air. Just nothingness.

"What is that?" Leo asked, his voice cracking as he clutched his chest. "Is that a demonic technique?"

"No," Kai said, his grip tightening on the obsidian hilt. "That’s a World-Eater. The system has flagged this entire sector as corrupted. It’s not trying to fix the story anymore. It’s trying to format the drive."

Suddenly, three elderly men in golden robes descended from the highest peaks of the Sect. These were the Great Elders, the true power behind the Immortal Sovereign Sect. Their auras were so powerful that the ground beneath them cracked simply from their presence.

"Halt, monster!" the eldest of the three roared, his long white beard flowing with Qi. He looked at the broken body of Long Chen and then at Kai. "You have destroyed the hope of our Sect! You have invited the wrath of the heavens upon us!"

"The heavens aren’t angry at me, old man," Kai said, not even turning to face them. He was watching the black line of static. It was moving faster now. "They’re just cleaning the house. And you’re part of the trash."

"Arrogance!" another Elder screamed, raising a jade staff. "We have cultivated for a thousand years! We are the masters of the elements! Brothers, form the Great Sun Array! We shall incinerate this anomaly and restore order!"

The three Elders began to move in a synchronized dance, their Qi merging into a massive, burning sun that hovered above the plaza. The heat was so intense that the stone began to melt into lava.

"Heavenly Art: The Sun’s Judgment!" they shouted in unison.

A beam of pure, white-hot energy shot from the artificial sun, aiming directly at the approaching line of black static. It was a strike that could have leveled a continent in any other story.

The beam hit the static.

There was no explosion. No sound. The massive beam of energy simply vanished the moment it touched the black line. The static didn’t even slow down. It continued its relentless march, and as it touched the golden sun created by the Elders, the sun simply blinked out of existence.

The three Elders stood frozen, their eyes wide with a shock that bordered on madness. "Our... our supreme art... it was ignored?"

"It wasn’t ignored," Kai said, finally turning to them. "It was deleted. You’re trying to fight a fire with a poem. The rules have changed."

The black line reached the first Elder. He didn’t have time to scream. The moment the static touched his golden robes, his body turned into a collection of gray blocks before vanishing into the white void. The other two Elders turned to run, but they were too slow. The void swallowed them whole, leaving nothing behind.

"Leo, Clara, get behind me!" Kai shouted.

He slammed his obsidian blade into the ground. "System Override: Sector Anchor!"

"I don’t need your permission," Kai hissed, his eyes glowing with a fierce, orange light. He reached into his mind, grabbing the ’Screen Time’ meter and forcing it to burn at ten times its normal rate. "Architect’s Authority: Hard-Code the Floor!"

The stone beneath their feet began to glow with a dark, pulsing orange light. As the black static reached them, it hit an invisible wall. The void roared, a sound like a million screaming machines, as it tried to erase the small patch of ground where Kai and his companions stood.

The pressure was immense. Kai felt his bones groaning under the weight of the entire world’s deletion process. Blood began to leak from his nose and ears, but he didn’t let go of the hilt.

"Kai, you’re hurting yourself!" Clara cried out, trying to reach for him, but the energy barrier between them was too unstable to touch.

"Stay... back!" Kai groaned, his muscles bulging as he fought against the void.

From the center of the black static, a figure began to emerge. It wasn’t human. It was a massive, mechanical monolith, three hundred feet tall, covered in glowing red eyes and rotating blades of pure light. This was the Defragmenter—the physical manifestation of the system’s cleanup tool.

The monolith emitted a low-frequency hum that shattered every glass object in the Sect. One of its red eyes focused on Kai.

"Anomaly Detected," the monolith’s voice echoed, a mechanical drone that vibrated in their very souls. "User: Kai. Role: Extra. Status: Corrupted. Initiating Manual Deletion."

One of the rotating blades of light swung toward them, a massive arc of energy that was designed to cut through the very fabric of reality.

Kai didn’t try to block it. He knew his barrier wouldn’t hold against a direct strike from a World-Eater.

"Leo! The scroll I gave you in the last world! Throw it now!" Kai shouted.

Leo scrambled to pull a tattered, glowing scroll from his robe. It was an item Kai had ’stolen’ from the Sci-Fi city—a prototype dimensional anchor.

Leo threw the scroll into the air. Kai didn’t wait for it to land. He swung his obsidian blade upward, catching the scroll on the tip of the sword and imbuing it with his own distorted energy.

"Genre Incursion: Protocol 9!" Kai roared.

The scroll exploded, but instead of fire or light, it released a swarm of metallic, nanite-like particles that swirled around the monolith’s blade. For a split second, the rules of the Xianxia world were overwritten by the rules of a High-Tech Dystopia.

The monolith’s blade of light suddenly turned into a physical, steel arm—and then it rusted. The sudden shift in genre laws caused a logic error in the monolith’s processing. It stuttered, its red eyes flickering from red to blue.

"Now!" Kai leaped into the air, his obsidian blade trailing a wake of black fire.

He didn’t aim for the monolith’s body. He aimed for the central eye—the processing core.

"You think you can delete me?" Kai screamed as he descended like a dark meteor. "I’m the one who knows where your kill-switch is!"

The obsidian blade pierced the central eye.

A massive explosion of white noise and red light followed. The monolith let out a screech that tore the sky apart. For a moment, the world was a chaotic mess of overlapping genres—vampire knights appeared for a second, then cybernetic soldiers, then dragons—before everything settled back into a blinding, white flash.

When the light faded, the monolith was gone. The black static had stopped moving, leaving a massive, white scar across the world, but the Sect was still standing.

Kai fell to the ground, his body smoking, his obsidian blade dull and cracked. He tried to stand, but his legs gave out.

Clara and Leo ran to his side, pulling him up. "Kai! Are you okay?"

Kai looked at his Screen Time meter.

[Current Screen Time: 12 Hours.]

He had almost nothing left. He had burned through years of life in a single fight.

"We... we won?" Leo asked, looking at the white void that now surrounded their small island of reality.

"No," Kai whispered, looking up at the sky. The red warning sign was gone, but it had been replaced by something worse. A timer.

[Next Synchronization in: 24:00:00.]

"The system didn’t delete us," Kai said, his voice raspy. "It just put us in quarantine. We have twenty-four hours to find a way out of this world before the next wave hits. And this time, it won’t be a machine. It’ll be the Developers."

Clara looked at the white void, then at the broken man in her arms. "Where do we go, Kai? There’s nothing left."

Kai looked toward the center of the Sect, where the Great Library was still standing. "There’s a hidden script in this world. A legend about a ’Heavenly Gate’ that leads to the source. If we can’t hide in the stories anymore... we’re going to have to break into the office."
