The grey light of the alpine afternoon was thinning into a bruised purple as Mordren led Ronan away from the sheltered timberline and up toward the high, wind-scoured scree slopes. Here, the stunted pines gave way to fields of loose shale, jagged granite teeth, and sweeping banks of hard-packed snow.

Mordren stopped beside a massive slab of wind-carved granite, holding up a pale hand for absolute silence. He pointed downward with a single, calloused finger.

Fresh indentations marked the frozen grit, deep, narrow scuffs and sharp, cloven tracks that angled upward across the face of the slope. A mountain goat, lean and hyper-vigilant, had passed less than twenty minutes ago, climbing toward the ledges to feed on lichen before nightfall.Full novel: Ronan: The Death God's Paladin [Grimdark] [Knights] [War] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"A grazing deer waits for the wind to bring it danger," Mordren rasped quietly, his breath pluming in the freezing air. "This one is already moving. It climbs faster than you, it knows every fissure in this rock better than you, and its ears are tuned to catch the clatter of loose stone. If you try to catch it by running like a man, it will hear you a hundred yards away."

"How do I close the distance while it's in motion?" Ronan asked, his eyes tracking the steep, treacherous path of the tracks.

"You use the Wind-Stride," Mordren replied, his obsidian eyes locking onto the boy with a fierce, demanding intensity. "Not as a sprint across an open field, but as a controlled collapse. You drop your center of gravity until your thighs burn. You pull the air into your gut, cycle it through your core, and let your momentum carry you without striking the earth. Your moccasins will hold your weight, but you must govern the impact."

Mordren stepped back into the shadow of the boulder, giving no further instruction. Find it. Touch it before it crests the ridge. If it bolts before you close within arm's reach, you spend the night shivering in the scree without a blanket.

Ronan didn't hesitate. He dropped into a low crouch, sinking his weight deep into his hips. Taking a sharp, measured inhalation through his nose, he engaged the core mechanics of the Faelun movement technique, settling his breathing into a rhythmic, silent cycle that burned the cold air clean in his lungs.

He stepped out from behind the boulder and began to climb.

Moving at speed while maintaining absolute silence was a brutal test of equilibrium. In his old iron-studded boots, Ronan would have relied on rigid ankle support and sheer muscular force, kicking his toes into the shale and sending cascades of gravel clattering down the slope. Now, stripped of that crutch, every step required exquisite calibration.

As he ascended the steep grade, his moccasins gripped the unstable stone. The hardened elk-hide soles conformed instantly to the jagged edges of the slate, while his toes fanned out inside the leather to feel for micro-frictions in the rock face. When a loose patch of shale threatened to slide under his weight, his ankle rolled naturally, absorbing the shift instead of fighting it.

He didn't run like a runner; he flowed like water seeking the path of least resistance through a dry riverbed.

Breathe. Melt. Yield.

The mental mantra synced with the deep, piston-like drive of his thighs. Upward he went, weaving from one slate outcrop to the next, using the deep grey shadows of the granite pillars to mask his silhouette against the pale snowfields.

Two hundred yards up the slope, a sudden flicker of white and grey movement caught his eye.

The mountain goat had paused on a narrow stone shelf about thirty paces ahead, its head raised, ears swiveling backward as it tested the wind for the phantom sounds of a predator.

Ronan froze instantly, pressing his chest flat against the cold face of the rock. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, consciously crushing the spike of adrenaline that surged into his throat. He forced his racing heart to slow down, bleeding the triumphant tension out of his muscles until his blood ran cold and quiet.

The goat twitched its tail, lowered its head, and took another three bounding leaps up the ledge, disappearing behind a jutting spine of granite.

Now.

Pushing off with a controlled, explosive burst of his legs, Ronan utilized the full momentum of his Wind-Stride technique, gliding silently across the open pocket of scree. He rounded the granite spine just as the goat turned back, startled by a sudden shift in the mountain drafts.

The beast's eyes widened in alarm, its muscular frame coiling to spring away up the cliff.

Before the animal could launch its leap, Ronan closed the final gap in a silent blur. He slid to a halt directly beside its flank, dropping his hand out with absolute, deadened intent, and pressed his palm flat against the thick, coarse wool of its shoulder.

The goat shuddered violently, snorting a cloud of frosty air, but before it could bolt, Ronan let out a slow, controlled exhale, releasing the physical pressure of his presence just as Mordren had taught him.

Confused by the sudden, ghostly contact that felt less like a threat and more like a phantom gust of wind, the goat hesitated for a fraction of a heartbeat, then scrambled sideways up the rocks, vanishing into the gathering dusk.

Ronan stood alone on the ledge, his chest heaving with controlled exhaustion, staring down at his open palm where the coarse hairs of the mountain beast still clung to his skin.

A soft, dry crunch of leather sounded from the dark behind him.

Mordren stepped out from the granite shadow, his face impassive, though a rare, hard glint of satisfaction burned in his dark eyes.

"You didn't break the stone," Mordren rasped quietly, looking out across the darkening valley. "And you didn't let your blood speak."

The dark elf turned his gaze back to the boy, the cold wind whipping his pale hair across his scarred cheek.

"You are no longer just a traveler dragging iron boots through the snow," Mordren said, his voice dropping into a rare, solemn cadence. "You are learning to become part of the dark."
