Author's Note: The Lore of the Mana Core

In the world of the Broken Kingdoms, mana is the invisible current underlying all existence. However, as Ronan discovers during his training with old Fergus, not everyone is born with the capacity to command it. Because Ronan currently possesses no awakened Core, he is classified as a commoner, surviving entirely on physical grit, natural instinct, and the skills forged in his father's workshop rather than supernatural power. The following dossier outlines the Fourfold Core System that governs power, magic, and craftsmanship across the frontier.

Mana is a natural energy that permeates the world. It exists within living creatures and throughout the natural environment, including plants, water, air, soil, minerals, magical beasts, and certain artifacts.

Every living being possesses some connection to mana. However, not everyone possesses an awakened Core. For most people, mana remains dormant throughout their lifetime. Those who awaken develop one of four recognized Core types:

Aithren Core: Mind, Magic, Will

Brannor Core: Heart, Strength, Martial Power

Faelun Core: Lower Abdomen, Movement, Flow

Duiren Core: Craft, Skill, Creation

A Core determines how an individual naturally interacts with mana. It does not determine their profession, personality, social status, or ultimate potential. A person can train outside their natural path, and rare individuals can develop techniques that combine multiple Core disciplines.

II. Mana and Its Application

Living creatures naturally absorb small amounts of ambient mana. For ordinary people, this process occurs unconsciously and produces no supernatural effects. An awakened individual gains the ability to consciously gather, circulate, refine, and utilize mana in three primary ways:

Internal Mana: Circulated through the body to enhance physical abilities, movement, senses, endurance, and bodily functions (primarily associated with Brannor and Faelun Cores).

External Mana: Projected beyond the body and shaped into supernatural phenomena (primarily associated with the Aithren Core).

Applied Mana: Directed through hands, tools, materials, and working processes to develop a supernatural connection with a chosen craft (associated with the Duiren Core).

III. Core Awakening

Awakening is the moment dormant mana condenses into a functioning Core. It commonly occurs during adolescence, but there is no fixed age. Awakening may happen naturally or be triggered by extreme circumstances, such as:

Extreme physical stress or repeated physical training

Prolonged magical exposure or concentrated mana

Powerful emotional experiences or life-threatening situations

Specialized magical rituals

Forced awakening is dangerous. An improperly awakened Core can damage the body, destabilize mana circulation, or prevent the Core from developing correctly.

IV. The Four Core Paths

1. Aithren Core

Location: Mind

Domain: Magic, Will, Mana Manipulation

Principle: "The Will shapes mana."

Overview: Mana gathers around the mind and nervous system, allowing the practitioner to perceive, manipulate, and shape mana through thought and will.

Common Professions: Mages, War Mages, Enchanters, Clerics, Necromancers, Elementalists, and Battle Mages.

2. Brannor Core

Location: Heart

Domain: Strength, Endurance, Martial Power

Principle: "Strength overcomes resistance."

Overview: Mana circulates from the Core throughout the body, reinforcing muscles, bones, organs, blood, skin, and the nervous system. The body itself becomes the weapon.

Common Professions: Warriors, Knights, Berserkers, Swordmasters, Lancers, and Champions.

3. Faelun Core

Location: Lower Abdomen

Domain: Movement, Flow, Agility, Stealth

Principle: "Flow becomes movement."

Overview: Governs movement, balance, momentum, and mana flow. Practitioners synchronize mana with breathing, reflexes, and physical motion, relying on efficiency rather than brute force.

Common Professions: Assassins, Rogues, Rangers, Shadowblades, Monks, Scouts, and Dancers.

4. Duiren Core

Location / Focus: Craft, Skill, Labor, Creation

Principle: "Skill gives form to creation."

Overview: Found commonly among rural communities, workshops, and artisan settlements. The Duiren Core awakens quietly through repeated work. Mana cannot replace skill; instead, it magnifies existing skill.

Common Professions: Blacksmiths, Weavers, Carpenters, Masons, Farmers, Leatherworkers, Shipwrights, Alchemists, and Cooks.

V. Core Development and Ranks

Core development requires four fundamental processes: Absorption, Circulation, Refinement, and Application. As a practitioner advances, they improve their Core capacity, density, stability, control, and efficiency. Advancing between ranks requires overcoming limits through controlled breakthroughs.

The Nine Core Ranks

Kindled: The Core has awakened and begun functioning with extremely limited control.

Awakened: Reliable conscious control and basic Core techniques become possible.

Tempered: Significant development brings more stable, dense, and efficient mana.

Forged: A powerful and reliable foundation is established for advanced techniques.

Ascendant: Reaches a level beyond ordinary training, significant on a battlefield or within a specialized discipline.

Sovereign: Extraordinary command over the Core with wide influence.

Transcendent: Surpasses conventional limitations, entering legendary territory.

Mythic: An extremely rare level of development that forms the basis of legends.

Exalted: The highest recognized rank, capable of influencing history and reshaping disciplines. None have been recorded even in legends, yet such beings have reached this level.

VI. Hybrid Disciplines

The four Core paths are not absolute restrictions. Some practitioners learn techniques that combine multiple disciplines:

Spellblade / Arcane Knight: Aithren + Brannor (Combines magic with physical reinforcement and combat)

Shadow Mage: Aithren + Faelun (Combines magic with stealth and mobility)

Shadowblade: Brannor + Faelun (Combines physical power with extreme mobility)

Spell Dancer: Aithren + Faelun (Uses movement, rhythm, and spellcasting as a unified style)

Battle Smith: Brannor + Duiren (Combines martial ability with advanced craftsmanship)

Arcane Craftsman: Aithren + Duiren (Combines magical knowledge with material manipulation and enchantment)

VII. Fundamental Principle

The Fourfold Core System represents four fundamental ways awakened beings interact with mana:

Aithren shapes it.

Brannor embodies it.

Faelun moves it.

Duiren creates through it.
