Chapter 13 - 12: The Grand Construction Begins

Rural Farming: My Buildings Can Be Upgraded

Eight people had trickled into Lin Xian Village. After his father’s introductions, Lin Feng was more or less familiar with them.

Sixth Grandpa, puffing on his tobacco pipe, said, "Dongyue, did your son come back without discussing it with you?"

"If he had, would I be coming to you guys only now? The news has spread all over town, and none of you even told me."

Sixth Grandpa tapped his pipe against a rock. "We all thought you knew. This isn’t the kind of thing we felt comfortable bringing up."

"Dazhuang, you’re a builder. Xiaofeng wants to build a house here to live in. Could you take a look?"

Lin Dazhuang’s burly frame pushed through the crowd from the back. "Dongyue, building a house is no problem. I’ll talk to Xiaofeng in a bit."

"Come on, I’ve booked a table in town. Let’s go down and discuss it over a meal."

Things were going more smoothly than Lin Feng had imagined. Once he bought the greenhouse materials, people would come to help set it up.

Furthermore, constructing the various other buildings wouldn’t be an issue either, as long as the money Lin Feng had could cover the costs.

Finally, even the electricity problem was solved. He just needed to buy some utility poles, and the power grid company would send someone to run a line from the nearest village.

"Xiaofeng, you should still come home with us tonight. There’s nothing in that village right now. It’s not safe to sleep in your car alone."

"Mom, it’s fine. It’s perfectly safe. Besides, there are so many things in the village now. You and Dad should go home and get some sleep. We have a lot to do tomorrow."

"Alright, let him stay in the village. Tomorrow morning, I’ll go buy the materials for you, then come over and get the greenhouse built first.

"As for the house, your Uncle Dazhuang agreed. Based on your requirements, it can be built for 100,000."

Lin Dongyue already knew about Lin Feng’s plans for the village. He didn’t understand any of it, so he would just build according to his son’s instructions.

This would surely be his son’s life’s work from now on. He’d have to bear the success or failure himself.

After seeing his parents off, Lin Feng drove back to Lin Xian Village with a huge smile on his face.

His parents’ concerns were resolved, and the upcoming construction plans were set to begin. It felt amazing.

Feeling cheerful, Lin Feng hummed a tune: "Grinning ear to ear, laughing oh so loud, with wine and song, I live for now; Grinning ear to ear, laughing oh so loud, seeking a life carefree and proud..."

After returning to the mountain, he sat down quietly and looked at the buildings listed on the Village Construction Order. There were still thirty types of buildings he hadn’t constructed.

’Subsidiary Buildings: Silk Institute, Water Mill, Oil Workshop, Restaurant. Special Buildings: Academy, Land God Temple, Mountain God Temple, Folk Workshop, Research Institute. It seems I can’t build any of these right now. I can only construct basic, resource, and defensive buildings.’

Lin Feng glanced at his bank account balance, and his mood soured.

’Still no money. Otherwise, building everything at once would be spectacular.’

He was rather curious. What kind of special effects would appear when these special buildings were constructed?

And what about the Lumberyard and Quarry? They didn’t seem to have any use once built.

He wouldn’t dare touch the trees and stones on this mountain without approval from the relevant authorities.

He scooped up Mo Yu in his arms. "The good times are coming. You need to grow up quickly, too."

Lin Feng checked Mo Yu’s status panel. The stats had increased slightly.

[Pet: Dog (Mo Yu)

Level: 1 (60/100)

Age: Three months

Sex: Male

Talent: None

Skills: None

Constitution: 2

Loyalty: 67 (100)]

In another two days of feeding, Mo Yu would be able to level up. He could then check the changes after the upgrade to get a general idea of how leveling worked.

...

The next morning, Lin Feng didn’t go to sell his grapes. There was too much to do today.

He first marked out the areas that needed construction. Since Lin Xian Village was built into the mountainside, it had a staggered, picturesque look, like a terraced field with a road running through the middle.

The main area he was currently developing was near the village entrance; the area further up the mountain was completely undeveloped.

Below the village entrance was Farmland, a patch of flat ground. Developing further out would mean creating terraced fields, an area now completely overrun with weeds and trees.

There was only one road into the village. Surrounded by mountains and forests, it was difficult for people to walk in.

He planned to build the Livestock Shed on the western side, against the mountain. That spot would definitely need to be leveled with heavy machinery.

’I need to build a Toilet, too. Otherwise, when people come to work, they won’t even have a place to relieve themselves.’

Lin Feng looked at the various things he had bought, wondering what to incorporate when building the Toilet.

’A toilet needs to be clean and hygienic, and it should also produce farm fertilizer. I should focus on these key points.’

After some thought, he decided to install a flushing toilet. In the early stages, the hygiene of the Toilet was more important.

At ten o’clock, Uncle Dazhuang arrived with the machinery, and soon after, various building materials were delivered.

"Uncle Dazhuang, let’s build a Toilet over here first. Otherwise, no one will have a place to go."

"You’re right, we should build the Toilet first. I’ll go tell someone to bring the excavator over."

As they began building the Toilet, his father drove up in a truck carrying the greenhouse materials. Everyone helped unload the items from the truck.

Lin Dongyue looked at the unplowed land and said, "Once the others get here, we’ll start building the greenhouse. I’ll go plow the field first. Oh, and we’re planting wheat in these four acres, so let’s scatter the seeds in a bit."

"Dad, teach me how to operate it. That way, when you guys are busy, I can farm by myself."

"Sure. It’s simple. As long as you have some muscle, all you need to do is control the steering..."

Lin Feng started learning from his father. It really wasn’t difficult, mainly because his strength had increased so much that controlling the steering was incredibly easy.

If his Constitution hadn’t increased, learning this would have been quite a challenge.

Hearing a quest completion notification, Lin Feng realized that the wheat planting quest was already finished.

The reward this time was wheat seeds with a 20% increased yield. Just like before, the effect was directly applied to enough seeds for one acre of land.

He was starting to see a pattern. The Village Construction Order probably didn’t give physical rewards, only conceptual or rule-based ones.

In fact, if his parents hadn’t found out, he could have used the power of the Village Construction Order to build the house directly, but he would have had no way to explain it.

The current situation wasn’t bad either. Although it cost more money, he didn’t have to worry about arousing suspicion.

Besides, once the buildings were constructed, and he upgraded them into Village Construction Order buildings, the structures would gradually correct and improve themselves automatically.

Inside the newly built greenhouse, they had already planted scallions, ginger, garlic, cucumbers, tomatoes, chives, and celery. He had originally wanted to plant some watermelons, but his parents vetoed the idea.

Even the cucumbers, tomatoes, and celery wouldn’t have been planted if he hadn’t insisted. Those vegetables required high temperatures, and it was already past October here, with the weather getting much cooler.

The busy day came to an end. Lin Feng looked at his rapidly dwindling bank balance. If it weren’t for his parents’ help, he wouldn’t have had a single penny left.

’I have to sell these grapes. Otherwise, I’ll really be out of money. I can’t keep relying on my parents.’

Little did Lin Feng know that while he hadn’t gone to sell his grapes, the people who had eaten the Jade Grapes were all undergoing changes due to their effects.

And the changes in these people were, in turn, bringing great fame to his Jade Grapes.
