Chapter 12: Binding of the Ghost

Sengoku Heat I: The Ghost and the Demon King

Location: Private Dressing Quarters, Kiyosu Castle.

Current Date/Time: Dusk. Late Summer, 1559.

The private quarters of Kiyosu Castle presented a sudden shift in the environment.

SLIDE. THUD.

The sliding paper screens shut with a solid thud, sealing the two men inside the shadowed room. The late-summer twilight filtered weakly through the washi paper. Outside, the sharp stench of burnt charcoal and saltpeter from the courtyard vanished, replaced by the scent of old cedar and dry, woven straw mats.

Soma Kurogane stood in the center of the room. His bare feet registered the cool, flat texture of the tatami, a sudden shift from the hot, dusty dirt of the forge. His legs trembled. The adrenaline from the matchlock demonstration was fading fast, leaving him lightheaded and hollow. He clamped his fists hard against his thighs, furious at his body's sudden weakness.

His right shoulder throbbed where the heavy musket’s recoil had driven straight into his collarbone. The thin, rust-brown hemp of his shirt rubbed against the raw, sweating skin of his chest with every shallow breath he took.

Oda Nobunaga did not sit.

He circled Soma slowly, his bare feet making no sound on the tatami. The late-summer air of Owari was already thick, but Nobunaga carried his own heat. As he stepped close behind Soma’s back, the sudden warmth made the hairs on Soma’s arms rise.

“You stood in the dirt and spoke of iron and logic, Ghost,” Nobunaga said.

Nobunaga’s voice was low and quiet. He stopped directly in front of Soma, casting him in shadow. The smell of rich incense and horses rose from his gray silk robes, thick in the narrow space between them.

“You claimed your ‘system’ completely removes the weakness of the man,” Nobunaga continued, his gold-flecked eyes narrowing with a predatory amusement. “Yet here you stand in my inner chambers, shaking like a wet dog in a late-summer storm.”

“It is a standard physical response to sudden, extreme stress, Lord Nobunaga,” Soma deflected smoothly. “The recoil hit harder than expected. I just need a minute to recover.”

“Recalibrating,” Nobunaga repeated, tasting the unfamiliar, modern word with a teasing lilt.

The Warlord raised his hand. The leather-rough pad of his index finger tapped lightly against the tight knot of the hemp sash tied at Soma’s waist. He did not pull it.

“Open the top of your robe, Ghost,” Nobunaga commanded, his tone dropping into a heavy law. “I wish to inspect the 'structural integrity' of my asset.”

Soma hesitated for a fraction of a second, his rapid heartbeat thudding painfully against his bruised ribs. His instinct for privacy rebelled against the command, but the reality of his situation was absolute. In this room, he owned nothing, not even the skin on his back.

He raised his trembling hands to the knot. His clumsy fingers fumbled with the coarse hemp, the friction of the cheap material resisting his pull before finally giving way.

RUSTLE. SHHHHK.

He loosened the upper half of the kosode and let the heavy fabric slide off his right shoulder. The cloth pooled around his elbow, exposing his pale chest and arm to the dusky air of the room.

The visual evidence of the recoil was stark and undeniable. A deep purple contusion was already blooming aggressively across the pale ivory skin of his shoulder. Dark, broken blood vessels formed a jagged map exactly where the heavy iron and walnut stock of the matchlock had slammed into his flesh. Against his unblemished, unscarred chest, the deep bruise looked like a fresh spill of dark, angry ink on pristine white paper.

Nobunaga’s gold-flecked eyes locked instantly onto the damaged tissue.

He builds machines that spit fire, yet his own shell is as fragile as a porcelain cup, the Warlord mused silently, a dark fascination taking firm root in his chest. He hides behind his intellect, but the iron always leaves its mark.

The Warlord stepped half a pace closer, entirely invading Soma’s personal space. The suffocating, furnace-like heat radiating from his broad, heavily scarred chest washed heavily over Soma’s exposed, shivering skin.

“You build a fire that does not breathe, and you claim it is a perfect machine,” Nobunaga whispered, his tone dropping into a register of fascination. He leaned in, his hot breath hitting the sweat gathered at Soma’s collarbone. “But iron does not bruise, Ghost. Only flesh does. You hold the math in your mind, yet your body breaks under the weight of a single shot.”

“My body wasn’t built for the load, My Lord,” Soma said, his voice tight. He stared at Nobunaga’s collar, resisting the urge to step back. “I don't have the mass to absorb that kind of kickback. It’s just a bruise. It won't affect my work.”

"You measure your value in ledgers and blueprints," Nobunaga rumbled, shaking his head slowly. "You think of yourself as a mind suspended above the mud, separate from the blood and the iron. But this..." He gestured vaguely toward the swelling bruise. "This proves you are still tied to the earth. You are not a ghost. You bleed, you bruise, and you tremble."

Soma swallowed, the sound loud in the quiet room. "The trembling is only adrenaline, My Lord. It will pass."

Nobunaga’s smirk was a cruel thing in the dim light. He slowly raised his right hand, his large, calloused fingers hovering just millimeters above the dark purple swelling on Soma’s shoulder.

“We shall see,” Nobunaga softly murmured, his voice a vibrating threat, “exactly how much load your foundation can bear.”

Nobunaga eliminated the final fraction of space between them. The Warlord’s massive frame completely blocked the ambient amber light filtering through the paper screens, casting Soma entirely in a suffocating shadow. The intense body heat radiating from Nobunaga’s chest was absolute, clashing violently with the cold sweat currently beading on Soma’s neck.

Without breaking eye contact, Nobunaga lowered his right hand. His thick thumb pressed deliberately into the exact center of the dark purple contusion.

He did not strike the muscle; he applied a slow, calculating pressure, grinding the damaged, swollen tissue directly against the bone of the collarbone.

Soma gasped. His knees locked, bracing against a sharp spike of pain in his shoulder. He tried to step back, but his feet wouldn't budge from the straw mats. He stood frozen under Nobunaga's gaze.

The pain shot from his collarbone down his arm, making his head swim. Nobunaga’s calloused hand pressed hard against his bruised shoulder, the grip heavy and unyielding. Soma ground his teeth, catching a sharp hiss of air behind his lips. Drawing on the endurance drills from his college rugby days, he forced his breath to slow. He refused to scream, keeping his eyes locked on the gray silk of Nobunaga’s collar.

“You speak of replacing the man with the system,” Nobunaga whispered, his voice a low grate that vibrated against Soma’s sweating neck. The Warlord’s thumb ground a millimeter deeper into the bruised flesh, testing the absolute limit of the engineer’s tolerance. “But a fortress is only as strong as its foundation, Ghost. You hold the math of the future in your mind, yet your body is soft. You are easily broken by the very tools you seek to optimize.”

“The body has its limits, Lord Nobunaga,” Soma said, his voice shaking. He kept his eyes up. “I didn't design myself to take that recoil. It's a flaw in my frame, not the weapon. The math still works.”

Nobunaga let out a resonant hum of genuine amusement. He did not sound angry; he sounded fascinated, like a predator testing the tensile strength of a newly captured bird. He finally released the pressure on the bruise, pulling his thumb back.

But the Warlord’s hand did not retreat.

Nobunaga’s rough fingers trailed down from the bruised shoulder, dragging across Soma’s sweat-slicked chest. His callouses caught against Soma's skin, registering the rapid thud of the engineer’s heart against his ribs.

Soma’s breath turned shallow and rapid. He was completely unaccustomed to this kind of physical dominance. In his own world, his interactions had strict boundaries. Here, in the dim heat of the room, he was entirely at the warlord's mercy.

Nobunaga’s hand slid lower. His thick fingers slipped beneath the open flap of the hemp shirt.

His heavy palm pressed directly over Soma’s groin, sliding over the tight cotton wrap of his fundoshi. Nobunaga gripped him, his calloused hand easily tracing the rigid, heavy length of Soma's erection straining hard against the restrictive fabric.

Nobunaga stepped directly between Soma's legs, forcing his stance wider. He used his height to crowd the younger man, pinning him in place against the shadows of the room.

His broad hand pressed flat over the front of Soma's hemp trousers, grinding his hard erection firmly against his lower belly.

Soma let out a low grunt, his hands twitching at his sides.

Nobunaga’s hand flattened, pressing hard. Under the heavy weight, Soma’s thighs trembled, his toes curling into the straw of the tatami. The coarse cotton of his underwear dragged tight over his crown, the friction so sudden his hips gave an involuntary twitch forward. He swallowed a gasp as a small, damp circle bloomed against the dry fabric of his fundoshi, the moisture cooling instantly against the hot rush pooling in his groin.

Nobunaga leaned closer, his chin nearly brushing Soma’s cheek. A faint, sharp smile touched his lips as he watched the pulse jump in the younger man's throat.

“You claim to be a machine of logic, Ghost,” he murmured, his voice low and steady. “You speak of variables and cold efficiency. But a machine does not gorge with blood when it is frightened. A machine does not swell against its bindings when it is claimed by a new master.”

Soma’s shoulders locked. “It is an involuntary physical response, My Lord,” he said, his chin tilted up even as his knuckles turned white against his thighs.

He tried to slide his hips back an inch, but Nobunaga’s fingers dug into his flesh, holding him in place.

“It is a reaction to stress and pressure,” Soma muttered, keeping his eyes fixed straight ahead. “It doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means everything,” Nobunaga said, his voice dropping to a low, quiet murmur that vibrated in Soma's chest. He closed his fingers around the thick length trapped beneath the hemp, squeezing until Soma’s knees trembled. “It means that beneath your math, you are flesh. You react to my hand, not the numbers in your head. Admit it, Ghost. Your body knows who rules here.”

A hot flush crept up Soma's neck, heat spreading to the tips of his ears. He tried to look past Nobunaga’s shoulder toward the darkened corners of the room, his mind searching for the door, but another squeeze of the warlord's hand snapped his gaze right back. The coarse hemp of the fundoshi rubbed hard against the wet, sensitive head of his penis. His hips gave an involuntary, desperate jerk forward, burying himself deeper into Nobunaga's palm.

“The variables...” Soma’s voice broke, his throat too dry to hold the technical tone. He swallowed, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow jerks. “I cannot control the reaction. Not under this much pressure.”

Nobunaga stared down at him. In the silence of the room, the only sound was the raspy, uneven catch of Soma’s breath. His mouth curved into a slow smile.

He slowly pulled his hand away from Soma’s groin.

The sudden loss of the warm palm let the cool draft of the room hit Soma's sweat-slicked skin. His thighs shook, and he had to lock his joints to keep his knees from buckling completely. Beneath the damp, coarse cotton of his fundoshi, his erection continued to pulse, heavy and painfully tight. He stood shivering in the silence, his body still tense, reacting to a touch that was no longer there.

Nobunaga turned, his dark gray silk robes whispering against the tatami as he walked toward the sliding paper screens.

“Fix your robes, Ghost,” Nobunaga commanded, his tone snapping back to the register of a Sovereign. “Your logic is highly useful in the field, but your flesh requires rest before it breaks entirely.”

He raised his voice, projecting the deep rumble easily into the shadowed corridor beyond the screens.

“Toichi!”

SLIDE.

The heavy cedar door scraped instantly open. The scarred, veteran retainer threw himself over the threshold, dropping to his hands and knees on the tatami mats. Toichi kept his head bowed low, completely ignoring the flushed, half-dressed foreigner trembling in the center of the room.

“My Lord,” Toichi grunted, his gravelly voice tight with deference.

“Escort the Ghost to his quarters,” Nobunaga ordered, not even bothering to look back at the pale engineer. The Warlord stared out into the darkening corridor. “He is done for the night. See that he does not freeze before the sun rises.”

“At once, Lord Nobunaga,” Toichi replied.

Toichi pushed himself up from the floorboards and stepped directly into Soma's space. Without a word, the old man clamped a dry, calloused hand around Soma's left wrist and hauled him forward.

Soma tripped, his heels scraping the tatami. The sudden jerk dragged the rough hemp of his collar straight across his bruised collarbone. His breath caught in a sharp wheeze, his spine locking instantly as his shoulder flared.

He couldn't find his footing to resist. His bare feet slid uselessly over the smooth mats as Toichi pulled. Clutching at the loose, rust-brown fabric with his free hand, Soma frantically bunched the hemp over his chest and down across his lap, desperate to hide the damp, prominent ridge still straining hard against his cotton wrap.

CHIRP. CHIRP.

Toichi pulled him through the screens into the cold hall. The sudden draft shivered over Soma’s wet chest. With every step, the floorboards squeaked sharply. The high creaks rang out in the dark, signaling their progress to anyone listening down the corridor.

"Keep your feet light, stranger," Toichi muttered, not looking back as he hauled Soma down the dark, polished corridor. The old retainer's grip was unrelenting. "You walk like a drunken farmer. The Sovereign has granted you a bed within these walls; do not insult his generosity by stumbling like a fool."

"I am merely... recalibrating," Soma managed to gasp out, his breath pluming in the cold air, clinging to the only scrap of his logic he had left.

Toichi snorted, a harsh, dismissive sound. "Your words are foreign to me, stranger. Whatever it is, do it faster. The Lord of Owari does not suffer weakness for long."

The damp night air hit Soma’s face, instantly chilling the sweat on his skin. He stumbled, his knees buckling so hard he had to lean his weight into Toichi’s rough grip to keep from falling. With every heavy step, a deep, steady ache pulsed in his collarbone. The heat of the room and the weight of Nobunaga’s hand were behind him, but as the massive wooden walls of Kiyosu Castle rose to block out the stars, a cold shiver ran straight down his spine.
