Perval was locked in his own desperate mismatched duel.
He whirled his scavenged agricultural flail exactly like a deranged miller caught in the eye of a hurricane.
The iron-shod striker hissed through the freezing air, creating a blurry, impenetrable barrier against the writhing tentacles actively hunting him.
“No touching!
This is a private, personal space!” he bellowed, brutally deflecting wave after wave of black coils.
Until he couldn’t.
One particularly thick braid of sentient hair refused to be deflected.
Instead, it coiled itself around the iron chain and the wooden striker, instantly clamping down exactly like a machinist’s vise.
Rather than simply relinquishing the weapon, the colossal monk braced his legs, furiously attempting to wrench the flail free by sheer brute force.
“Let go, you mangy dreadlock!”
The hair yanked in one direction; he yanked in the other.
The ancient, weathered wood and rusted iron links were simply no match for raw, supernatural force.
There was a deafening crack.
The flail snapped cleanly in half.
Perval tumbled backward into the snow, left holding nothing but a jagged, splintered stick.
“Well, I suppose the harvest is over…” he remarked, casually tossing the entirely useless tool aside.
The primary burden of the battle had fallen squarely upon the temple guards.
They were seasoned professionals.
They wasted no time on dramatic shouting or flashy acrobatics.
They operated in terrifying, flawless synchronization.
They carried no shields, relying entirely upon their bizarre weapons, which required both hands to wield effectively.
The guards did not risk firing blindly; these weapons offered exactly one chance to discharge, a chance that had to be capitalized upon perfectly.
And so, they fought in brutal, close-quarters combat, utilizing the steel tips to thrust, and the thick, reinforced wooden hafts to parry incoming strikes.
They were exceptionally good, clearly accustomed to skirmishing with yokai, but they were by no means untouchable.
The monster, despite its grievous wounds, fought back with unadulterated fury.
One of its human “legs” lashed out exactly like a bullwhip, striking the female guard squarely in the flank.
Her lacquered lamellar armor buckled inward with a sickening groan, instantly dropping the woman to her knees in the deep snow.
The male guard blurred into motion, throwing his own armored body in front of her to physically shield her, brutally blocking a follow-up strike with the shaft of his weapon.
The kinetic impact was so staggering that the guard staggered backward, his iron-shod boots digging deep into the frozen earth, leaving two long, ragged trenches in the snowbank.
The rest of the crew charged out of the ryotei, leaving Figlin; still frantically struggling into his boots; behind in the ruined vestibule.
Duria skidded to a halt on the threshold, her crimson eyes rapidly sweeping over the chaos unfolding in the street: Zedora aggressively spitting out a mouthful of snow, a completely disarmed Perval, and the heavily armored guards steadily giving ground beneath the beast’s relentless assault.
Her gaze finally locked onto the colossal, bloated blue head of the woman fused to the horrific spider abdomen, currently dripping profusely with slime and black gore.
The vampire wrinkled her nose in disgust.
“Kuso (Shit),” she hissed.
There wasn’t a single shred of fear in her voice, only pure, unadulterated aesthetic revulsion.”She’s absolutely hideous.
Even by the standards of the underworld.”
The vampire’s words, rather than being swallowed by the howling gale, found their target with lethal precision.
The spider-lady froze.
Her cloudy, milky eyes narrowed to venomous slits, and her bloated, human face contorted into a hideous grimace that was vastly more complex than mere animalistic fury.
It was wounded vanity.
The beast had perfectly understood her.
She pivoted toward Duria, completely ignoring the searing agony of her bleeding wounds.
She opened her jaws unnaturally wide, unhinging them exactly like a serpent preparing to swallow prey whole, and unleashed a sound that was no ordinary scream.
It was a vibrating, ear-piercing shriek pitched at a frequency that actively shattered the icicles hanging from the roof gutters and made the crew’s teeth ache right down to the roots.
The city answered the call.
The long shadows cast by the paper lanterns, the abandoned carts, and even the architectural angles of the ryotei’s walls began to rapidly thicken and bubble exactly like boiling pitch.
From the inky darkness, things began to drag themselves into the light.
These were not ordinary yokai.
These were grotesque, terrifying caricatures of life, resembling the worst hallucinations dredged straight from the abyss of madness.
Small, hideously deformed torsos boasting multiple mouths twisted into eternal, agonizing smiles.
Bloated, spherical abdomens profusely dripping black slime, shuffling forward on severed human fingers rather than legs.
Amorphous, shifting masses of raw meat and coagulated shadow, slithering heavily across the snow with wet, sickening schlups, their dozens of milky, unseeing eyes fixed hungrily on the heroes.
The male temple guard, the one still standing, recognized a fleeting opportunity amidst the utter madness.
The exact second the monstrosity focused the entirety of its hateful attention on Duria and actively summoning its horde, the warrior unleashed a deafening roar and charged.
Capitalizing on the beast’s momentary exposure, he thrust his lance upward with murderous, surgical precision.
The broad, razor-sharp steel head slid effortlessly deep into the soft, pulsating flesh connecting the bloated human head to the grotesque abdomen.
The chitinous plating cracked loudly, and the weapon buried itself completely, sinking right up to the iron firing mechanism.
“Shine!
(Die!)” the guard roared.
His gauntleted fingers clamped frantically around the wooden haft, desperately seeking the trigger lever to blast the demon into oblivion with a point-blank ball of fire.
He was a fraction of a second too slow.
The Jorōgumo, feeling the freezing steel violate her innards, convulsed, arching her bloated body backward with the raw kinetic force of a hurricane.
The sudden, incredibly violent motion was so staggering it ripped the lance clean out of the warrior’s grip, nearly snapping both of his wrists in the process.
The man staggered backward, dropping heavily to his knees in the deep snow.
He stared up at the monster in terror.
His weapon was buried deep within the beast’s flesh, protruding from its thick neck like a macabre, iron splinter.
But the iron cylinder holding the explosive charge remained completely silent.
The firing mechanism had not been triggered.
The spear was lodged directly in the enemy’s heart…
and was now nothing more than an entirely useless hunk of metal.
“Form a circle!
Backs to the center!” Lengos roared, smashing the iron rim of his kite shield directly into the face of a shadowy abomination actively trying to reach Figlin.”Do not let them separate us!
They are coming from everywhere!”
He desperately tried to wrest control of the utter chaos, but the situation was rapidly spiraling out of control.
More and more nightmares continually dragged themselves from the dark; amorphous, shifting lumps of meat studded with snapping jaws, and spiders the exact size of mastiffs seemingly woven directly from the freezing shadows.
The disarmed temple guard had no chance of falling back to the defensive formation.
The Jorōgumo, still sporting the un-triggered lance buried deep in her neck, leaned over him with terrifying, blinding speed.
Hundreds of severed human hands clamped onto the man’s limbs, torso, and helmet, instantly rendering him completely immobile.
“Itadakimasu (Thanks for the meal),” the beast bubbled thickly.
The monster pulled.
There was a sickening, wet, tearing sound, exactly like someone brutally ripping apart a roasted chicken, entirely drowning out the guard’s frantic scream, which lasted for only a fraction of a second.
The arachnid hoisted the dismembered, shredded remains up to its bloated jaws, and the pristine snow instantly turned a brilliant, steaming scarlet.
Straight into this freezing, bloody slaughter stepped Neira.
The succubus strolled out into the snow-choked street exactly as if she were stepping out onto a sun-baked summer meadow.
She wore no winter coat.
She wore no armor.
Her body was draped in nothing but her sacred priestess robes; forged of silk so incredibly sheer and diaphanous that under the pale moonlight and the glow of the paper lanterns, they concealed absolutely nothing.
The delicate fabric clung desperately to her damp skin, aggressively highlighting every single curve.
Her profane, sacred tattoos seemed to actively writhe and slither across her flesh.
An ordinary human would have frozen solid in a matter of seconds, but she was not human.
She actively radiated searing heat.
The potent memory of the recent, intoxicating hours she had just spent in the pleasure house still actively boiled in her veins like liquid fire.
The sheer ecstasy she had ruthlessly harvested, and so generously provided, now served as both her roaring furnace and her impenetrable armor.
The snow actively melted and hissed into steam the exact second her bare feet touched the frozen earth.
The priestess gracefully raised both hands, and her abyssal eyes flared with an intense, blinding pink light.
“Fear neither the bitter cold nor the creeping dark,” her voice, heavy with velvet and actively vibrating with a intimate promise, sliced cleanly through the deafening din of the slaughter, reaching the ears of her companions not as a military command, but exactly as the whispered promise of a lover.
“My Goddess shall boil the blood in your veins.
Let your deepest desires be forged into a lethal blade!”
A overwhelming wave of searing, cloyingly sweet energy erupted from her fingertips.
The magic slammed into the crew’s weapons, aggressively saturating them with the raw, unadulterated power of Lust.
Lengos’s bastard sword and kite shield flared brilliantly, the freezing steel suddenly pulsating with a rhythmic, throb, exactly like a beating heart.
Zedora’s twin axes, still profusely dripping with the beast’s black gore, ignited with a thin, sickly violet flame that actively seemed to hunger for contact with enemy flesh.
Duria, her katana gripped loosely in one hand, offered a mocking smile to the encroaching nightmare horde, actively treating the lethal threat as nothing more than an amusing parlor trick.
Her razor-sharp blade was suddenly wreathed in a shimmering, vibrant pink aura that left brilliant, glowing afterimages hanging in the air with every casual flick of her wrist.
Perval’s hands, previously blue from the biting frost and now entirely devoid of a weapon, were abruptly engulfed in an aura of soft, warm light, instantly transforming his bare fists into instruments of total destruction vastly harder than forged iron.
Even Yerga, who stood slightly apart from the main group, visibly flinched in sheer surprise.
Her grim, heavily gilded sickles, which were accustomed to tasting only cold death, were now actively glowing with that exact same, unsettling violet hue.
She stared down at her weapons with a potent cocktail of disgust and morbid fascination; channeling the raw, vibrant energy of life and pure ecstasy through implements specifically designed for slaughter was something perversely, horribly unnatural.
“Take them, my sweetlings,” Neira purred, slowly tracing her tongue over her plump lips as the magic flooded their bodies with a new, searing strength.”Hurt them terribly.
Do it for me.”
The monstrosities surged forward.
This was no organized army.
This was a tidal wave of corrupted, rotting meat, jagged fangs, and pure, unadulterated hatred.
Abominations that defied every single law of nature continually poured from the shadows.
Figlin, watching the encroaching wave of horrors, frantically reached for his belt.
Not for a fresh powder horn, but for his scavenged, golden skull currently serving as a makeshift tankard.
“Just maintaining my equilibrium!” he roared, taking a desperate swig of the burning rum.
He aggressively wiped his mouth with the back of his sleeve and leveled his pistol.
A creature launched itself directly at him; a horrific, nightmarish hybrid of a spider and a bloated toad, heavily coated in slime, emitting a sickening gurgle, with a venom sac visibly pulsating beneath its jaw.
The dwarf did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He pulled the trigger.
The deafening roar of the gunshot perfectly synchronized with the wet splat of the exploding skull.
The creature’s head burst exactly like an overripe melon, aggressively spraying thick green gore and jagged chunks of brain matter in every direction.
Beside him, Perval was actively choreographing his own personal, deadly ballet.
His heavily calloused, bare feet, currently blazing with Neira’s vibrant pink light, were significantly harder than forged steel.
He executed a flawless pirouette, smoothly evading a set of snapping jaws, and followed through with a devastating roundhouse kick.
His glowing heel connected solidly with the flank of a slithering maggot sporting human eyes.
The sheer kinetic energy of the impact rippled outward like a shockwave.
The abomination wasn’t merely knocked back; it ruptured at the seams, detonating in a raining fountain of guts and viscous black gore.
Dead center in this chaotic slaughter, Zedora had effectively become a localized cyclone of total annihilation.
Her twin axes, now blazing fiercely with the magical fire of Lust, carved brilliant pink streaks through the freezing air.
She hacked and slashed with a savage, breathtaking precision.
Whenever the razor-sharp, prehensile hair of the Jorōgumo attempted to ensnare her, Zedora’s glowing blades effortlessly severed the coils without a shred of resistance.
What’s more; Neira’s potent magic reacted instantaneously.
The severed strands did not bleed their corrosive acid.
The pink fire instantly cauterized the wounds shut, leaving behind nothing but the sickening stench of scorched protein and heavily charred ends.
“You’re not looking quite so fearsome anymore, are you?!” the barbarian roared triumphantly, brutally amputating yet another cluster of reaching “tentacles.”
Lengos was the unyielding bedrock against which the breaking waves of monsters were smashed to pieces.
He fought methodically, executing no wasted movements.
A solid block with the kite shield; the sickening crunch of an attacker’s shattered bones.
A horizontal slash of the bastard sword; a severed head rolling heavily across the snow.
A braced parry; a brilliant shower of sparks erupting from deflected claws.
A devastating counter-thrust; the glowing steel sinking deep into a slimy, corrupted heart.
The paladin was a flawless killing machine, but even well-oiled machines eventually suffer wear and tear.
The yokai were by no means defenseless.
One of the smaller, scuttling shadows slipped rapidly beneath the rim of his shield and sank its jagged fangs deep into Lengos’s calf, puncturing the steel rings of his chainmail.
Another abomination brutally raked Zedora’s exposed back with its claws, carving three deep, bleeding furrows into her heavily tattooed skin.
The heroes’ bright crimson blood rapidly mingled with the pitch-black gore of the monsters, actively churning the pristine snow into a steaming, muddy slurry.
Weaving effortlessly among them, exactly like a vibrant crimson phantom, was Duria.
To her, this bloody battlefield was not a slaughterhouse; it was a grand ballroom.
She did not bother parrying incoming strikes; she simply danced between them.
Her katana, heavily wreathed in the pink aura of Lust, moved with a terrifying velocity that was completely impossible for the human eye to track.
When a heavily slime-coated monstrosity lunged at her with a deafening roar, the vampire merely offered a girlish giggle, executing a flawless, spinning sidestep.
“Osoi!
(Too slow!)” she called out brightly.
Before the beast even had the chance to snap its massive jaws shut, Duria was already standing directly behind it, casually brushing an entirely nonexistent speck of dust from her armored pauldron.
The monster froze completely stiff, and a fraction of a second later, its severed head slid smoothly off its neck, the result of a single, impossibly perfect cut.
“Next, please!” she shouted, proudly baring her fangs in a brilliantly radiant smile.
She actively treated dispensing death as the greatest joke, and the brutal slaughter as a innocent game, completely and ignoring the grim fact that her stark-white hair was steadily becoming heavily soaked with the blood of others.
Hovering on the grim periphery of this hellscape, the sole surviving temple guard stared numbly at the horrific death of her partner.
She watched in total silence as the beast systematically devoured him piece by piece.
She knew with chilling certainty that conventional combat would only serve to needlessly prolong the agony of this fight.
The frigid clarity of a final decision settled into her dark eyes.
With freezing, mechanical fingers, she unclipped the bulbous iron explosive cylinder mounted just beneath the handguard of her spear.
She struck the flint striker hanging at her belt.
A bright spark flared.
The painfully short, “emergency” fuse began to hiss ominously.
She whispered a brief, entirely soundless prayer to her ancestors, gripping the bomb tightly in both hands.
“Banzai!” she shrieked.
That single, ragged cry contained the totality of her despair and the unyielding honor of her warrior caste.
She launched herself into a dead sprint directly at the colossal spider-woman, fully intending to bury the primed explosive straight into the monster’s bloated abdomen.
But the Jorōgumo was significantly faster.
And infinitely crueler.
When the guard was a mere handful of paces from her target, a cluster of black hair shot toward her like a harpoon, clamping viciously around her ankles.
“Nani…!?
(What…!?)” the woman barely managed to gasp.
The monster jerked its head with terrifying, inhuman force.
The guard was brutally launched straight up into the air, soaring high above the slate roof of the inn, left dangling entirely helplessly upside down against the backdrop of the pitch-black sky.
And then the hissing fuse ran out.
The explosion was devastating.
The guard’s body was torn to shreds in a single, blinding flash, creating a macabre, spectacularly bloody firework high above the city.
A sickening rain of boiling blood, jagged armor shrapnel, and steaming viscera showered down over the combatants below, drumming loudly against the roof tiles and hissing as it hit the freezing snow.
The beast was left holding nothing…
or rather, it was left holding something.
Trapped tightly within its black coils were the woman’s severed legs, brutally ripped clean off at the waist, actively smoking and profusely dripping hot gore.
The Jorōgumo furious that the main course had so slipped from her fangs, swung the severed limbs with the raw kinetic force of a battering ram, smashing them into a heavily churned mound of dirty, muddy snow piled against the wall of the tavern.
A thick wave of frozen mud, vile slime, and coagulated blood erupted into the air.
Yerga was standing entirely too close.
She was currently tracing a complex necrotic sigil in the air with one hand, while the other; with an almost tender absence of mind; was casually stroking Void, who was rubbing affectionately against her ankle.
She didn’t even have a fraction of a second to raise a magical shield.
The tidal wave of freezing, filthy sludge slammed directly into her.
It thoroughly plastered her pale face, ruined her immaculately structured coiffure, and dripped heavily down the front of her previously pristine silk gown.
This was the final drop that caused the bitter cup to overflow.
Or rather, the splash of mud that instantly ruined a small fortune in high-end couture.
