“Richard forged Ethan’s signature on the filing.” Claire had not stopped talking since she sat down.

“Ethan has been trying to undo it since Nathan told him about it two days ago.

He did not know about it.Full novel: Shattered Vows; Broken hearts — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He still does not fully know why his father would target Theo specifically, but I do.

Because I have been paying attention for two years.”

Lily looked at her.

“Two years?”

“I found out about the frame eighteen months after the divorce.

That’s was when I returned.

I didn’t know how to reach you directly.” Claire’s hands were folded on her lap, very still.

“I was afraid.

Of what Ethan would do if he found out I was making contact before he was ready.

So I…,”

“You went through Zara?” Lily tilted her head.

Claire stopped.

She looked at Lily’s face and read what was there, “Um…,” her mouth closed.

“Yes,” she said quietly.

The room went very still.

Lily turned to the door.

She kept her voice completely even.

“Zara.”

The door opened.

Zara had been in the outer office the whole time.

She came in and closed the door and stood near it with the posture of a woman who has been dreading this moment for a long time and is now inside it.

“How long have you been in contact with Claire?”Lily said.

“Two years.

Um…it’s not what you think Lily” Zara said quickly.

“Two years.” Lily did not repeat it as a question.

She said it to hear it out loud, to give it the air it needed to become real.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought it would hurt you.”

Zara’s voice was careful and raw at the same time.

“You were building something.

You were finally, you were okay again, Lily.

You were laughing.

I thought bringing his family back into it would undo everything you’d worked for.

I thought I was protecting you.”

“You let me grieve alone for two years,” Lily said.

“Knowing his sister was trying to reach me.

Knowing there was someone on the other side who had information, you sat across from me every single day and you let me carry it alone.”

Zara opened her mouth.

She closed it.

There was nothing to put in the space that Lily had just made, and they both knew it.

“Not now.” Lily turned back to Claire.

“We are not doing this now.”

She sat down.

She put her hands flat on the desk.

She looked at Claire with the focused, closed expression of a woman who has put something very painful in a box and locked it and will deal with it later, in private, where the cost of it belongs only to her.

‘Zara.’ She aligned her pen with the edge of the folder.

‘Of all the people I did not brace for, I braced for Ethan, for Margaret, for the legal letters and the stationery and the knock on the door she always half-expected.’ Lily thought.

she did not brace for Zara.

Two years of Theo’s birthday parties and late nights building proposals and the kind of closeness that comes from working next to someone through everything.

Two years of trusting one person completely.

She needs to get through this meeting.

She will fall apart about this later.

Not now.

“The file,” she said.

Claire put it on the desk.

A thick folder, tabbed, organised, the copy of everything Nathan had given Ethan.

Lily opened it and read it the way she read everything that mattered: from the top, every word, no skimming.

She did not move for twenty minutes.

Nobody spoke.

When she reached the last page she closed the folder and sat still.

“He knows everything now?” she said.

“He has known for four days.

He has not slept.” Claire leaned forward slightly.

“He is not coming after Theo, Lily.

He is trying to reach you.

Every letter through Nathan, the visit to your office, he is trying to fix it.”

Lily nodded slowly.

Then she asked the question, and she asked it so quietly that Claire had to lean in to hear it.

“Does he know about my parents?”

Claire’s eyebrows furrowed.

“What about your parents?”

Lily looked at her for a long moment.

Then she closed the file and straightened it on the desk.

“Thank you for coming, Claire.”

*****

Vivian’s POV.

A private hotel suite, same afternoon.

The suite was on the fourteenth floor of a hotel that smelled of luxury.

Vivian was already there when he arrived, she had been waiting for eleven minutes, which she resented, and she was standing rather than sitting because sitting would have felt like waiting and she was not going to give him that.

He came through the door with the unhurried ease of a man who had never needed to move quickly because the world had always arranged itself around his pace.

He moved through the room like he owned it, which he did, in the way such men always owned rooms without their names being on anything, and he reached for her as a greeting, his hand familiar at her arm, the gesture of someone who had assumed a claim.

She stepped back slightly.

“Things are escalating.” She kept her voice even.

“Ethan found out about the frame.

He has a file.”

He sat.

He was not concerned.

That was the thing about him, he was never concerned, which she had once found reassuring and now found something else entirely.

“Calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down.” She held her ground.

“The file has Margaret’s name on it.

And it is only a matter of time before someone starts asking the next question, which is where the money came from, which leads to…,”

“The injunction holds.” He reached for her again, this time brushed her boobs, then moved his hand on her arm, proprietary, the touch that had always meant you belong to this.

“Nothing can be released publicly.

Calm down.”

She looked at his hand on her arm.

She looked at his face.

“Did you plan to use me as your exit plan?” She said it quietly.

“From the beginning.

Was that always what this was?”

He looked at her.

He smiled and said nothing.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Something closed in her face, not hurt, nothing as soft as hurt.

Something harder and colder and more useful.

She picked up her bag.

“I see,” she said.

“Babe!

You owe me a night”.

She looked back, then walked out of the suite and took the elevator down and sat in her car in the underground garage for a long time.

She did not cry.

She sat with her hands on the wheel and she thought very carefully and very precisely about what she knew and who knew it and what leverage looked like from the inside of a situation that was starting to collapse.

She was never his partner.

She stared at the concrete wall in front of her.

She was his insurance policy.

His exit.

The person whose name could absorb the fall if the fall came.

The only way to stop being someone’s exit plan was to become someone else’s, someone who needed her information more than they needed her silence.

She picked up her phone.

She did not dial yet.

She thought a little longer.

Back at LChen Events, the office was quiet.

Lily opened her laptop and pulled up a new document, then she sat for a moment looking at the blank page.

Then she typed one name at the top, in capitals, and looked at it.

RICHARD SINCLAIR.

She opened the second tab.

The police report from her parents’ accident.

Third tab, the Foundation accounts page, the three line items, the forty thousand dollars.

Fourth, the sympathy card, photographed on her phone the night she packed.

With deepest condolences, Richard Sinclair.

Fifth, everything Claire had just left on her desk.

She started building.

She was on the fourth document when her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She looked at it for one second, then answered.

“Ms.

Chen.” A man’s voice came from the other side.

“My name is Derek Chow.

I think it’s time we talked.”

She went completely still.

Her eyes moved to the document on her screen.

To the name at the top of it.

“Who are you?” she said.

“I have something to tell you about your marriage and who set you up”.

He paused.

“I’d give you every detail”.

Lily’s breath stopped.

“Where are you?”

He gave her an address.

She wrote it on the notepad beside her keyboard, tore the page off, and sat quietly for a moment with it in her hand.

Then she looked at Zara, who had been in the corner of the office since Claire left, keeping her distance, making herself small in the specific way people make themselves small when they know they have done damage and are not sure if the relationship can hold the weight of it.

Lily looked at her for a long time.

Long enough that Zara’s hands tightened on her clipboard.

“Are you coming with me or not?”

The relief that moved through Zara’s face was raw and immediate and she did not try to hide it.

“Yes

.”

Lily nodded.

She picked up her keys.

“We are not okay yet.” She walked to the door.

“But we have work to do.”
