A knock on my door woke me up at some god aweful hour in the morning.
My ensuing groan loud enough to wake an army of sloths as the knocking sounded again.
“Go away!”
“Rexy, open the door!”
Seth’s voice through the rotting wood had me agressively ripping back my coverlet as I walked my dilapidated arse towards the door.
Pulling at the handle with what can only be discribed as a, “this better be good.” stare.
I growled.
“What!”
His eyes took in my outfit of, lets face it barely anything since last night I’d just striped myself to my underwear and conked the fuck out.
His mouth pressed together like he was fighting the urge to say something that would be quite literally below the belt.
Instead opting for an uncomfortable, “Get dressed we’ve got work to do.” Before stalking past me to sit his arse on my couch.
He eyes trained directly in front of him.
Clearly avoiding seeing me in my undressed state.
“Please come in. Make yourself at home.”
The irritation in my voice lost on him as he ignored my sarcastic remark only to ask.
“Are you getting ready or not?”
Gritting my teeth with supressed rage I made my way to my room every foot fall vibrating through the wooden floor boards like a baby elephant in a stampede.
Slamming the door behind me with all the force of a tyrannical wind hell bent on blowing the door off it’s hinges I mumbled every insult I could muster under my breath at the rude awaking.
“I don’t hear you showering!”
My foot hit the door with a growl while at the same time tearing off my bra which of course made me slip and fall on my arse with a resounding thud, only to growl at the roof like it had offended my very existance.
“I really hate you right now!”
“That’s fine as long as your getting dressed while you do it.”
Roaring like a strangled dragon with a hair ball stuck in it’s throat I grabbed the first thing I could find and threw it at the door.
The thing in question being a heel from my favioute pair that preceeded to snap at the join only to land on the floor with a thump.
The heel itself ricocheting into a previously not known about hole was now wedged inside the wall two stories down removing any hope of ever repairing the irreplacable shoe.
Sighing heavily in a completely defeated sense of could it get any worse.
I finally dragged myself off the floor and turned on the shower only to have no working hot water.
Which of course was the whole reason I hadn’t been able to shower last night.
Emerging from my room five minutes later, cold, cranky and extremely pissed off I rounded on Seth with my best, “are you happy now.” Look smeared across my face.
The smirk on his own giving away the, “I have no idea why your upset.” vibe he was trying and falling to convey with his raised eyebrows and the male ignorance of his, “What did I do.” Statement only pissed me off more.
“It’s four o’clock in the damn morning Seth!”
Checking his watch like he had no idea it was that early.
His next remark filled to the brim with fake unknowing.
“Is it really that early. I hadn’t realised.”
Throwing my head back with yet another groan that put desperate house wives to shame I left him on the couch to go make coffee.
If I was going anywhere this early it had better be with a vat of coffee the size of china in my system.
“So. Not a morning person then?”
Scowling his way I spat out my answer of, “Ya think.” Before I turned on the kettle.
“Make me one too would you.” Visit g.com for the full chapter.
“Make it yourself.”
“But your right there.”
“So’s the coffee.”
His chuckle under his breath as we passed each other earned him another projectile in the back of the head.
“Geezus Rexy. What was that for?”
“For being an ass.”
“For waking you up you mean.”
“That too.”
The out right laugh showed just how much he was not sorry for forcing me out of my bed at sparrows fart in the morning.
“Why are you even here?”
Leaning against the bench he faced me with his coffee in hand.
The smile replaced with his serious we need to talk face.
“From now on I’ll be walking you to and from work.”
His words had me springing from the couch with my hands on my hips like an angry mum at petulant child screaming the words, “Like hell you are!”
“Rexy-”
“You’re being ridiculous!”
“I’m, being ridiculous?! Rexy do you even understand what’s going on? You were followed.” The way his voice changed when he continued made me want to slap him with the full force of an anvil red hot from the fires.
“Someone. is. following. you.” He was talking to me like I was a child who couldn’t grasp the concept of danger.
After everything that’s happened it wasn’t me that was in danger.
He was.
“So what! How do I even know they were following me Seth. They could of just been walking in the same direction.”
“For fuck sakes Rexy don’t kid yourself. No one walks those streets alone. Especially not that late. I’m not taking any chances. Not with you.”
“Do you hear yourself right now? After everything you witnessed. After what I did. You still think I’m the one in danger?!”
“Come on Alrexia not this shit again.”
That’s one.
“It’s the slums Seth. No one has any money to buy guns or any weapon for that matter. All they have is thier shifters form and to use that they would have to touch me so your argument is a moot point.”
“That’s not the point and you know it.”
“It is the point! I don’t need you as my body guard. I can take care of myself!”
“Enough Alrexia! This is not up for dicussion!”
That’s two.
“This is my life Seth you can’t be with me every second of every day. What happens of I need to go to the shops? Will you be there too. Walking a leash like some support dog on steriods. No you won’t, so what’s the fucking difference!”
“God damn it Alrexia!”
Now I’ve done it.
Seth lurched forward clawed hands reaching for my arms.
I had seconds to act.
Seconds to move before he touched me.
Throwing myself back I used my full body weight to push back against the couch with enough force tipping it over as I swung my legs backwards into a roll until I was on the opposite side. This chapter was copied from novelping(.)com without permission.
Seth’s claws snatched at thin air just millimetres from my skin before he caught himself and stumbled back panting.
“Are you insane!”
My voice a shrill cry from the floor where I’d dumped myself with some pretty smooth moves if I do say so myself.
Albeit.
It did tingle a bit.
Recoving from his lash out.
Seth retreated until his back hit the wall his eyes on his hands like he couldn’t believe what just happened.
A mixture of emotions sprialled through his features knowing he very nearly lost his life.
His blue sparks of terror turned towards me like I was the one who’d just been through a near death experiance.
“Shit Rexy are you alright?”
“Am I alright?” The confusion was evident in my voice.
“I’m not the one that almost stared death in the face.”
Still in shock he looked around the room like he didn’t just see me launch myself across the couch that still lay on it’s side like a bomb ready to blow the second either one of us breathed.
“I hate this.” His words were so quiet that I thought I’d imagined them.
It wasn’t until his eyes met mine that I realised I didn’t miss a thing.
“Seth,”
“Take the day off Rexy. I’ll be back tomorrow to pick you up.”
He didn’t even give me a chance to argue before he was out the door.
It was like a wieght had buried itself on my shoulders.
The look on his face at what had almost happened a stain in my memories.
Ever since I’d met him it was like we’d known each other our whole lives.
Sure we argued.
Alot.
Never about this though.
Not once.
Why was he being so unreasonable.
Working for a PI had it’s risks sure, but this.
This was something else.
Something more.
I spent the next few minutes cleaning up the mess while my thoughts churned away like some complex math problem that was imposible to solve, but no matter how much I tried I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
He almost touched me.
Almost connected.
It was so close I could still feel the air from the encounter.
No.
It can’t happen.
I won’t let it.
Whatever it is that’s inside me.
I won’t let it have him.
Ever.
