Chapter 12: The Eastern Ravine

So I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?! — Infinite Evolution

The eastern ravine cut through the Thornwall Thicket like an old wound—deep, narrow, and lined with stone that wept moisture even in the dry season. Caelan had seen it from a distance during the Shadow hunt, but he'd never entered. The kobolds avoided it. Too many thorn-lizards. Too many things with venom.

Today, venom was exactly what he needed.

He oozed down the ravine's slope before dawn, his Chitinous Armor drawn tight and his Bioluminescence extinguished. The walls rose steeply on both sides, studded with iron-bark roots that had broken through the stone and hung like frozen serpents. The air smelled of copper and old rot. Something had died here recently. Something else was still feeding.

System, he thought. What are my current Acid Slime requirements?

[Path: Acid Slime. Absorb 5 venomous or acidic creatures. Current progress: 1/5.]

One. The centipede must have counted. Four more.

The vibration sense picked up movement almost immediately. Small. Multiple contacts. A nest of thorn-lizards, perhaps, or a hunting pack. Caelan pressed himself against the ravine wall and waited.

The first lizard appeared within minutes—a foot-long reptile covered in scales the color of rusted iron, its back bristling with hollow spines that dripped a pale green fluid. Venom. Not lethal to a slime, probably, but corrosive enough to eat through his membrane if he was careless. Its tongue flicked out, tasting the air, and its yellow eyes swept the ravine floor without pausing on Caelan's motionless form.

One, he counted.

Two more followed. Then a fourth. The pack moved with the skittering coordination of creatures that hunted together, communicating through head-bobs and tail-flicks. They were searching for something—the same dead thing Caelan had smelled, most likely.

He let the first three pass. Then he struck.

Mandible Bite formed a cutting edge as he launched himself at the fourth lizard, aiming for the gap between its skull and spine. The creature didn't have time to screech. His pseudopod punched through scale and flesh, and Absorption activated before the body hit the ground.

[Acid Slime progress: 2/5.]

The other three lizards wheeled around, spines flaring. Green venom sprayed in a wide arc—not aimed, just panic—and Caelan felt the corrosive droplets sizzle against his Chitinous Armor. The armor held. Barely.

Two down, he thought. Three to go.

The remaining lizards scattered. One fled up the ravine wall. The other two split in opposite directions, trying to flank him. Classic pack tactics. Ineffective against a single target that didn't have a front or back.

Caelan flowed toward the closer one, using Shell Cracking to shatter its defensive spines before they could spray. The creature died in seconds. The third tried to bolt but found its escape blocked by the slime that had somehow gotten behind it—a trick of positioning, not speed.

The fourth lizard, the one on the wall, was gone by the time Caelan finished absorbing the third. He let it go. Three kills was enough. He had his venom sample, his progress, and a better understanding of how corrosive attacks worked against his body.

Status?

[Acid Slime progress: 4/5.]

Four. One more.

He oozed deeper into the ravine, following the scent of copper and decay. The dead thing was close now. He could hear the flies.

He wasn't alone.

Author's Note

Short, sharp, and venomous. Caelan is one kill away from unlocking the Acid Slime path, but the ravine has more to offer than just lizards. Something died down there. Something big. And scavengers always attract larger predators.

Next chapter: Caelan finds the corpse—and what's guarding it. The final venom kill won't be as easy as the first four.

If you're enjoying the hunt, here's how to help:

· Rate the story. Each star is a drop of venom. We need five. We're at four.

· Follow. So you don't miss what's waiting at the bottom of the ravine.

· Add to Favorites. Your Favorites list is a thorn-lizard. Let this story be the slime that absorbs it.
