The Watcher kept its word.
It didn't follow when Caelan left the clearing. It didn't speak again. It simply stood at the center of the polished stone, its bruise-colored eyes tracking his departure, the sphere containing his promised moment still glowing in its palm. Caelan didn't look back. He had what he needed.
The Deep Thicket felt different now. Predator's Presence painted the fear-map in vivid detail, but the boundaries had shifted. The Howler's territory was already being claimed by smaller predators—scavengers, opportunists, things that had waited in the margins for the tyrant to fall. Nature abhorred a vacuum. Caelan filed the observation away. The same principle would apply to the rival in the deep places. Cut off its children one by one, and the territories would shift. The balance would change. The rival would eventually have to respond.
But not yet, he reminded himself. I'm not ready yet.
His status hovered at the edge of his awareness, numbers ticking upward with each absorbed creature he passed—small things, insects mostly, not worth a full hunt but useful for topping off his reserves.
[Status — Caelan Voss]
[Species: Lesser Slime (Unranked)]
[Level: 6]
[Biomass: 54/70]
[Evolution Progress: 56/100]
[Skill Fragments:]
· Predator's Presence: 78% complete.
· Bone Armor: 18% complete.
· Shadow Step: 7% complete.
· Terror Roar: 76% complete.
Two fragments nearly done. Two still waiting. The numbers told a story of progress, but not enough. He needed one more significant hunt before he could return to the village with something to show for his absence.
System. Is there a creature in range that could complete either Predator's Presence or Terror Roar?
[Scanning. Two candidates detected. Nearest: Stalker Wraith. Bearing: one hundred yards west. Compatible skill: Predator's Presence (estimated completion: 78% → 100%).]
Another Wraith. That'll work.
The second Wraith died faster than the first.
Caelan had learned its patterns—the way it flowed rather than ran, the way it led with claws, the way its semi-corporeal form compressed when funneled into tight spaces. He found a root channel similar to the one he'd used before, flickered his Bioluminescence in the wounded-insect pattern, and waited.
Stolen novel; please report.
The Wraith came exactly as expected. It died in under thirty seconds.
[Biomass acquired. 8 units.]
[Skill fragment complete: Predator's Presence.]
[New skill acquired: Predator's Presence (Full).]
The change was immediate. The fear-map sharpened from a blurry pressure into something closer to vision—a landscape of threat levels and territorial boundaries so precise he could navigate it blind. He could feel the rival's influence now, a dark stain at the edge of his awareness, miles away but unmistakable. He could feel the village, too—a cluster of familiar presences, Rask's sharp mind like a beacon among them.
And deeper. Much deeper. A presence so vast and cold it made the rival's stain feel like a candle next to a bonfire. The dragon. Still sleeping. Still dreaming.
I can feel it, Caelan realized. All of it. Every threat. Every territory. The whole forest is a map in my head.
It was overwhelming. It was also, he admitted, extremely useful.
One fragment down. Three to go. He turned his attention north, toward the territory where the Terror Howler had ruled. Now that the alpha was dead, its former hunting grounds should be full of lesser predators—creatures that had survived by hiding from the Howler's sonic attacks. Some of them might carry the fragments he needed.
But that hunt would have to wait. His biomass was climbing, but his membrane still ached from the Howler's assault. His Chitinous Armor had cracks that needed time to seal. And Rask would be counting the days since he'd left. The kobold tactician didn't worry—or at least, he wouldn't admit to worrying—but Caelan had learned to read the spaces between Rask's numbers.
Home, he decided. Report. Rest. Then hunt again.
He turned south, toward the village, and began the long ooze through the Deep Thicket's shadows.
End of Chapter 20
Author's Note
Twenty chapters. One fragment down, three to go. Evolution progress at fifty-six percent. And Caelan just unlocked the full version of Predator's Presence, which means he can now sense every threat in the Verdant Sea—including the rival and the dragon. No pressure.
This chapter marks a transition point. The first evolution is approaching, and with it, the end of Volume 1. Caelan has his path (Unknown), his allies (the kobolds), and his enemies (the rival, the dragon, the hunger itself). The pieces are in place. Now we just have to watch them move.
If you've made it this far, thank you. Building a slow-burn story like this takes patience, and you're still here. That means something.
