Kayla’s POV

My mother jumped back, her face flushing bright red with shock and immediate anger.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing just walking into my house without knocking?!”

”I… I knocked, the door was open, I..” I stammered, my voice dying in my throat as I looked between her and the strange man.

“You have no right to just barge in here like you own the place!” my mother yelled, stepping forward, her expression twisted with anger instead of relief or happiness at seeing me.

Not a single trace of guilt crossed her face.

A sudden, rage flowed through my vein.

All the pain, all the sleepless nights, all the humiliation came flooding back to the surface.

“I have no right?!” I shouted back, my voice cracking as hot tears spilled over my cheeks.

“I was locked out for weeks!

I called you a hundred times and you ignored every single text!

I destroyed my entire life, I sold my body to pay for your fucking surgery, and you didn’t even care!

You didn’t even appreciate it!”

”Oh, stop being so dramatic!” my mother snapped, crossing her arms defensively, showing no remorse.

“You always make everything about yourself! Do you expect me to just sit in an empty house and mourn while you run off and do God knows what?!”

Before I could even process her cold, cruel words, the man in the sweater stepped forward, clearing his throat awkwardly.

“Um… Kayla, right? I’m Richard,” he said, offering a weak, apologetic smile.

“Your mom and I… well, we’ve actually been together for a week now.

I’m really sorry we didn’t tell you sooner”

”A week?!” I screamed, turning my aggression on him, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

“She didn’t even care about me!

I went through hell to keep her alive while she was out here playing house with a new man?!”

”Watch your tone in my house!” my mother screamed, stepping right up to my face.

“You think you’re some kind of hero because you paid for my surgery? Well, nobody asked you to ruin your life! Get out of my house right now before I throw you out myself!”

The words hit me so hard.

My own mother.

After everything I sacrificed for her, she looked at me like I was a piece of trash.

“I hate you,” I whispered, the words leaving my mouth before I could process it.

“I never want to see you again.”

Without waiting for her to reply, I turned around, and ran out of the house, slamming the front door behind me so hard the walls shook.

I ran out into the freezing winter night, the cold snow stinging my tear stained face.

My breath came out in ragged, freezing breath as I walked down the dark street.

My phone was dead.

The battery had completely ran down while I was at work, meaning I couldn’t call Sarah, I couldn’t call a taxi, and I couldn’t even check the time. You are reading on g.com, the official source.

I was completely alone in the freezing dark cold Street, walking fast with my coat wrapped tight around me, shivering violently from the cold.

I didn’t look where I was going.

My vision was completely blurred by hot, heavy tears as I crossed a quiet, dimly lit side street.

Suddenly, a pair of blinding, headlights flashed right in front of my face.

A sleek, expensive luxury car was turning the corner, moving way too fast for the icy road.

Panic caught through my chest that my breath caught.

The terror of the blinding lights, combined with the stress of the pregnancy, the exhaustion, and my mother’s cruel words, completely overwhelmed me.

I didn’t even get hit hard, the bumper of the car just barely brushed lightly against my knee as the driver slammed fastly on the brakes.

But the intense wave of fear was enough.

My knees gave out completely beneath me.

The world spun sideways, the bright headlights blurred, and I collapsed softly on the snowy road, losing consciousness before I even hit the ground.

When I slowly opened my eyes, I knew right away that something wasn’t right.

This wasn’t my bedroom with its cracked ceiling.

It wasn’t Sarah’s tiny apartment either.

The ceiling above me was smooth and dark, with warm lights glowing around the edges.

The room smelled expensive, like fresh hotel sheets mixed with a rich woody scent.

Everything around me looked elegant, almost too perfect to be real.

The moment I tried to move, pain shot through my entire body.

My muscles ached as if I had been beaten up.

My head pounded so badly that I wanted to close my eyes again and disappear.

Then panic hit me.

My hand flew straight to my stomach.

I held my breath.

For a few terrifying seconds, I couldn’t think. Read this novel at g.com for the best experience.

Then I felt the gentle curve beneath my palm.

The baby was still there.

A shaky breath escaped my lips, and tears filled my eyes.

“Thank God…”

”You’re awake.” The deep male voice made me jump.

I quickly turned my head, only to regret it as pain shot through my neck.

A man stood beside the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the snowy city.

He wore dark pants, and was shirtless.

His body was lean and muscular, with a few old scars scattered across his skin.

One hand held a glass filled with liquor while the other rested against his ear as he was on a phone call.

The second I saw his face, my heart almost stopped.

Lucien Throne.

He looked even more handsome than I remembered.

His dark hair was slightly messy, and his sharp features made him look cold and untouchable.

There wasn’t a hint of warmth in his expression.

For one foolish second, I wished I was dreaming.

I closed my eyes tightly.

Please… let this be a dream.

Slowly, I opened them again.

He was still there.

He lowered his hand after ending the call and looked at me.

But there was no sign of recognition.

He didn’t know who I was.

The way he looked at me was calm and distant, like I was just another stranger who happened to cross his path.

Of course he didn’t remember.
