Chapter 14

Soundtale

Hoss Delgado slammed his combat boot onto the wooden chopping block. He wore a heavy leather jacket and a black eyepatch over his right eye. The eyepatch served absolutely zero medical purpose. He claimed it functioned as an aesthetic warning to predators. The registry certified him as an S rank monster hunter. He spent his weekends hunting Vault creatures purely for recreational cardio.

"We start with the absolute fundamentals." Hoss pulled a single red radish from his jacket pocket. He placed the root vegetable directly in the center of the scarred oak block. "The Uno ancestral blade requires extreme finesse. Brute volume just bends the steel and ruins the edge. You must coax the metal into singing along with your physical swing."

I stood in the scullery courtyard and looked at the radish. I looked at the weapon gripped tightly in my right hand. Lullaby possessed a terrifying reputation across the continent of Solfege. My ancestors forged the metal to channel destructive acoustics directly into enemy armor. The steel pressed freezing cold against my calloused palm. A deep geometric groove ran down the exact center of the blade to catch the surrounding air. The hilt carried the weight of countless successful assassinations and continental boundary disputes. I currently wielded a priceless historical artifact against a piece of salad.

"Slice the root." Hoss stepped backward to clear the swing radius. "Do not bruise the oak block beneath it. The Sonic Slash operates on the exact millimeter of the target. Push the frequency into the edge."

I tightened my grip on the leather wrapped handle. I focused entirely on my sternum. The dormant wasp nest awoke instantly. I clamped my jaw shut. I fed a tiny sliver of frequency straight down my right shoulder and into my forearm. The acoustic energy entered the metal hilt. Lullaby answered my hum with absolute terrifying enthusiasm. The steel vibrated instantly. The violent hum rattled my teeth through bone conduction. My ulna bone ached from the extreme kinetic friction. Power charged immediate biological rent on this continent. The cartilage in my wrist screamed as the microscopic vibrations tore at my connective tissue.

I swung Lullaby downward. I meant to slice the radish perfectly in half. I completely underestimated the pristine conductivity of the ancestral steel. The blade greedily ripped the entire frequency from my cramping wrist. A compressed wave of solid sound detached completely from the edge of the weapon. The acoustic wave bypassed the root vegetable entirely. It sailed three feet over the wooden chopping block. It crossed thirty yards of open cobblestone courtyard space. The air distorted into a visible rippling crescent as the sound barrier broke.

Chef Mung Daal had established an outdoor culinary station near the heavy scullery doors. He claimed the fresh valley wind infused his root vegetables with superior catalytic properties. A massive cast iron cauldron sat over an open fire pit. The cauldron held sixty gallons of his legendary simmering beef stew.

The stray sonic wave hit the cauldron. The thick cast iron sheared perfectly in half. The cut looked exactly like polished glass. The top hemisphere of the massive pot slid backward and slammed heavily onto the cobblestones. Sixty gallons of boiling brown liquid flooded the entire courtyard instantly. Chunks of roasted lamb and caramelized carrots rode the thick tsunami directly into the drainage grates. The fire pit hissed and died under the deluge of ruined gravy.

Lunch died with extreme honor.

"Blade school day one." I lowered my vibrating weapon and massaged my throbbing forearm. "Murdered soup. That constitutes a successful test of the edge."

The heavy wooden scullery doors blew wide open. Mung Daal stepped out into the bright sunlight. The Executive Chef wore a pristine white uniform tailored to perfection. He held a wooden stirring spoon in his right hand. He stared at the steaming puddle of ruined catalyst cuisine coating the cobblestones. His tall chef hat trembled violently.

"Who executed my masterpiece?" Mung Daal kept his voice eerily quiet.

"The vegetable provoked me." I held Lullaby flat against the seam of my trousers. "The crosswind completely altered the trajectory of the strike. A tragic atmospheric accident occurring during authorized martial instruction."

"A tragic atmospheric accident." Mung Daal stepped directly into the brown puddle. The boiling stew immediately ruined his polished black shoes. He completely ignored the scalding heat soaking through his socks. "You severed cast iron with a flatware class vibration edge. That specific broth required fourteen hours of delicate continuous simmering. You insulted the culinary arts entirely. I declare a total vendetta against your dietary schedule."

Fuck my life completely. A dietary vendetta from the unionized kitchen meant starving. Corporate logistics relied exclusively on secure supply chains. Mung Daal controlled the entire caloric pipeline of Castle Overtura. I burned thousands of calories just surviving the ambient terror of my parents. Withholding nutrition amounted to a death sentence.

Two senior bakers walked out of the scullery directly behind the Chef. They wore heavy flour dusted aprons and scowled at the ruined food. "The pastry guild stands with the Executive Chef." The lead baker crossed his arms over his chest. "We initiate a sympathy strike immediately. We will withhold all sugar work until proper justice is served for the beef stew."

This situation escalated with terrifying speed. Labor disputes required instant suppression before they infected other critical departments. If the groundskeepers joined the strike the estate would drown in unraked limestone gravel within hours.

The corporate manager inside my brain immediately seized control of my vocal cords. "A vendetta disrupts the essential harmony of the estate." I stepped forward into the blast radius of the culinary fury. I slipped Lullaby smoothly back into its leather sheath. My right wrist throbbed relentlessly. "The kitchen suffered a severe material casualty today. Compensation is clearly required to restore balance to your ledger."

"Compensation." Mung Daal raised his wooden spoon toward the sky. "You cannot resurrect a perfectly reduced bone stock. The marrow is gone forever."

"I propose a highly lucrative new venture." I utilized my absolute best executive boardroom posture. "The southern storehouse contains five hundred pounds of imported garbanzo beans. The Duke despises them. They sit rotting on the shelves collecting dust. The pastry union requires a heavy savory appetizer to pair with their unleavened flatbreads during the evening diplomatic service. A dedicated hummus production line resolves the surplus immediately and vastly expands your menu authority."

Mung Daal lowered his spoon exactly one inch. "Hummus." The Executive Chef tested the word on his tongue. "Whipped with imported olive oil and roasted valley garlic."

I pressed the advantage ruthlessly. "This project falls under the exclusive domain of the culinary guild. Zero interference from the estate stewards. You maintain complete creative control over the consistency and the plating."

The lead baker leaned closely toward Mung Daal. They conferred together in hushed rapid tones. The baker gestured explicitly toward the empty bisected cauldron. Mung Daal nodded slowly and stroked his chin.

A flock of estate sheep stood gathered in the nearby wooden holding pen. They chewed their cud rhythmically in the midday sun. They watched the negotiation unfold with completely blank rectangular pupils. The livestock served as formal witnesses to the new treaty.

"The kitchen officially accepts the hummus concessions." Mung Daal pointed his wooden spoon directly at my nose. "The vendetta remains on a strict probationary suspension. If you target my premium cookware ever again we will withhold all dessert privileges for a complete calendar year."

"Agreed." I bowed politely to the kitchen staff. The chefs turned around and returned to the scullery to draft their new recipes. The labor peace held firm across the courtyard.

Hoss Delgado walked over to the wooden chopping block. He picked up the intact red radish. "You missed the root completely." Hoss tossed the vegetable high into the air and caught it securely. "You poured a tidal wave of resonance through a garden hose. The ancestral steel simply rejected the excess pressure and fired it outward."

"The physical mechanics require extensive refinement." I rubbed my cramping forearm. "My grip strength faltered under the vibration."

"Your survival instincts remain sharp." Hoss adjusted the leather strap of his eyepatch. "You talk your way out of starvation like a seasoned coward facing an executioner. I respect the pure hustle. Now draw the blade again. We have a bucket of carrots waiting for execution."

I stared at the puddle of ruined stew soaking deeply into the courtyard dirt. The corporate manager inside my head ran the final audit for the morning. I successfully survived a volatile labor dispute and secured massive culinary leverage for the baking department. My martial prowess resulted entirely in dead soup and structural damage to cookware. I pulled Lullaby free from the leather sheath and prepared to torture my wrist joints a second time. Trajectory concerning. Course unchanged.
