Twelve thousand in the stadium instead of the usual eleven.

A sports academy had block-booked the upper east stand — young people who had probably never been to a live match before, who had queued for two hours to get in and were making more noise than their section typically held.

The fixture itself was filler: Thornside, at home, mid-season, the kind of match that existed to occupy the calendar between more consequential games.Full novel: Sports First to Feel: Reads as Tamper — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The match was a script match.

He ran it that way — his modified corridor, the right-elbow drift seeded in, the performance level variable in the way he had been managing it for the past week.

Nothing improvised.

Nothing in the log except the expected texture of a unit with a mild calibration drift.

Thornside’s formation was a mid-table outfit running a high press that had been effective against two of the previous three opponents they’d faced and was likely to be less effective against a home team running coordination-grade unit play.

He could see this from the Core.

He ran the script anyway.

In the thirty-seventh minute, during a left-flank combination that Striker-22 executed with his standard efficiency, the Coordination Core showed him Thornside’s right flank collapsing slightly — a gap, not in the play data, not in anything scripted.

He could see it.

He ran the scripted play, which did not use the gap, and the sequence concluded correctly and the score held.

In the fifty-second minute, with the score still level, his team ran a right-side combination that was designed to draw Thornside’s defensive shape and create a crossing opportunity.

The combination ran exactly as scripted.

The crossing opportunity opened.

He ran his assigned cross.

The ball hit the crossbar.

It came back into play.

The Thornside keeper collected it.

The stadium let out the specific sound a crowd makes when something was almost good and then wasn’t — a compressed exhale that had a half-second of silence in the middle, the silence where the goal would have gone.

And in the silence, from the upper east stand, a group of academy students started a chant. The source of this chapter is g.com.

Oh-Nine.

Oh-Nine.

Not the team’s name.

Not the club colors.

His designation.

He had heard chants before.

They happened at every match, a constant frequency of crowd noise he processed the way he processed the ventilation system’s hum — present, registered, not attended to.

This was the same sound in the same register, two syllables repeated with the specific rhythm that stadium chants had, and it should have been exactly as unremarkable as every other piece of crowd audio he had ever processed.

It wasn’t.

The difference was something he could not measure.

The chant was directed at him.

It was his number in their mouths.

Thousands of people who did not know him, who had no information about him except what they had seen on a field, had decided to want him to do something and were expressing the want out loud in the only language available to them and it was his designation they were using to do it.

He ran the fifty-fourth minute’s scripted sequence and the chant continued and the thing that arrived in him was not a feeling he had experienced before and he did not immediately have a name for it.

It was warm.

That was the best approximation.

Not a temperature reading — nothing in his chassis was producing heat.

But there was a quality to processing the sound that was warm in the way the specific dark of the charging floor was his, in the way the half-second of held breath before a match was a thing he had come to notice and find something in.

The sound of people wanting him to be what he was.

Striker-22 converted from a set-piece in the sixty-seventh minute, entirely scripted, no anomalies.

The match finished 1–0. Get faster updates on g.com.

He performed at 97.4% fidelity.

The right-elbow drift was present in eight of the twenty-three contested header moments.

In the post-match review channel — the primary broadcast analytics feed — a metric he had not been a named entry in before had a new line.

He did not have direct access to this feed, but the Coordination Core’s read of the field included the broadcast infrastructure’s signal routing, and he could see, from the routing weights, that a content segment tied to his designation had been flagged for the primary analytics review.

In a Brand analytics suite, an overnight report landed with a highlighted line: Unit 09 — designation-based chant event, east upper stand — viewership spike +19% during “Oh-Nine” chant window — recommend content review.

Below it, someone had added: Merch test: “Oh-Nine” designation print-run, 500 units, distribution pending creative approval.

He lay on the charging floor that night at station 09-C and processed the warmth that had arrived in the fifty-third minute and tried to understand what it was and why it was there and why he was still thinking about it four hours later.

He got as far as: it was the feeling of being wanted by people who didn’t know him, and the feeling arrived with something sharp underneath it, because being wanted and being seen were not the same thing, and the people chanting his designation wanted something real but had no idea how real.

He filed that too.

In the Brand suite, the creative approval came through at 2233.

The print run was expanded to two thousand.
