Chapter 9: The Stone-Ape Awakens

SSS-Awakening: I Have Infinite Talents

"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." — Joseph Campbell.

The blast doors groaned as Micah pushed them open and slipped inside.

The first thing that hit him was the air. It was like walking into an old basement that hadn’t been opened in decades.

He stood in total darkness for about three seconds. Then the lights came on.

Not all at once though. They flickered to life one after another, running along the ceiling in a long sequence that went deeper into the room. The vault slowly revealed itself.

Micah’s jaw dropped.

The place was huge. It was easily the size of a football field, carved directly into solid bedrock.

The ceiling arched high above his head, held up by steel beams that somehow hadn’t rusted despite the years.

Rows of server racks lined both walls, covered in tiny blinking lights that still hummed with power.

Energy conduits ran along the floor like metal veins, all converging toward the center of the room.

And right there, sitting on a raised circular platform at the exact center of the vault, was a containment pedestal.

It was made of black metal and perfectly preserved. Magnetic clamps held a small object suspended about six inches above its surface, spinning slowly in the air.

The Astral Prism.

Micah’s breathing stopped for a second.

The crystal was about the size of his fist. It was multi-faceted, with each face cut so precisely it looked like someone had spent years perfecting it.

It pulsed with a rhythmic light that changed between violet and blinding white. The energy coming off it was so strong that Micah could feel it pressing against his skin from afar.

The Flux Energy pouring off the Prism was so pure that his body was reacting to it before his brain could even process what was happening.

"That thing is a world-shaping treasure," Micah thought. His eyes were glued to it.

His Beast Analysis Talent fired automatically.

[Astral Prism: Concentrated Flux Conduit.]

[Purity Rating: UNDEFINED.]

[Energy Output: CRITICAL.]

[WARNING: Unfiltered absorption may cause meridian rupture.]

His hands started trembling, but not from fear this time.

This was pure want. It was the type of desperation a starving man feels when he smells food for the first time in days.

He didn’t wait any longer. Every second he stood here admiring the crystal was a second closer to Dexter and Myra breaking through the surface defenses upstairs.

The Shadow Step Boots fired. The thrusters killed all friction beneath his feet and he ran across the vault floor.

The deactivated floor sensors didn’t even register his passage. He was too fast and too light. The afterimage his body left behind dissolved into tiny sparks before it could trigger a single response from the dead security system.

He reached the pedestal in under seven seconds.

He reached for it immediately without hesitation. His fingers closed around the Astral Prism and he immediately felt the warmth spread through his palm.

It felt so warm. The energy inside the crystal pushed against his skin. He could feel it pulling at his meridians, trying to flood into his body through sheer pressure alone.

"Got it."

He shoved the Prism into his tactical pack and zipped it tight.

Then every single light in the vault turned red.

It wasn’t gradual. It wasn’t one by one. Every single light in the entire room turned red at the exact same moment.

The ceiling strips, the server rack indicators, the floor panels. Everything went blood red in a heartbeat.

A low mechanical hum filled the room. It wasn’t coming from speakers. It was coming from the walls themselves. The entire vault was vibrating, and Micah could feel it through the soles of his boots.

"What the hell?"

He spun around, his knife already in his hand.

Behind the containment pedestal, the shadows started moving. But not the way normal shadows move when a light shifts.

A shape started forming right in front of him.

First came two hug legs, each one as thick as a tree trunk. Then a broad, hunched torso that was wider than a car.

Two long arms appeared, hanging past the thing’s knees, each ending in four blocky fingers the size of cinder blocks.

Finally, a head formed. It was the size of a truck engine, flat and featureless, except for two horizontal slits where eyes should have been.

The slits ignited.

Two beams of burning red light shot out and locked directly onto Micah’s chest.

His Beast Analysis Talent screamed a warning so loud inside his head that it felt like someone had jammed a needle straight into his brain.

[WARNING! HOSTILE ENTITY DETECTED!]

[Threat Class: APEX GUARDIAN.]

[Flux Equivalent: 70%+.]

[Designation: Stone-Ape Construct — Biomechanical Sentinel, Mark IV.]

[STRONGLY ADVISE IMMEDIATE RETREAT.]

70% Flux Unlock.

Micah’s blood ran cold. He was only a few meters away from something that could send him to the afterlife for good, and with Dexter and Myra there too, his chances weren’t exactly looking great.

’"Are you freaking kidding me right now?"

The Stone-Ape was fully formed now. It stood nearly four meters tall, its body made entirely from compressed bedrock.

The rock was dark grey and cracked, with glowing red veins running through the cracks, like magma beneath volcanic rock.

The construct straightened to its full height. The steel beams in the ceiling groaned above it. Its head nearly touched them.

A sound came from deep inside its chest.

lt was a deep hum that sounded like monks doing their meditation. The sound built and built until Micah could feel it rattling his bones. His teeth vibrated. His eardrums ached .

The optical sensors burned brighter. They were fixed entirely on him. The construct’s internal systems had already classified him.

Unauthorized intruder. Hostile. TERMINATE!

"Okay, okay. I’ve had enough of this shit. Turn around, use the boots, and get the fuck out of ....."

BOOM!

The Stone-Ape moved.

For something made entirely of solid rock, it moved with a speed that was beyond human comprehension.

There was no wind-up, warning, crouching or coiling like a normal predator would. One second it was standing completely still, and the next second it was airborne.

Four meters of solid bedrock launched itself across the vault like a missile. The floor cracked under the force of its push-off. Chunks of concrete shot upward. Dust exploded outward in a thick ring that swallowed everything behind the creature.

It covered the twelve-meter gap between them in a single bound.

Its right fist led the charge. The arm was cocked back, then swung forward with every single ounce of that seventy percent Flux behind it.

The fist came down directly at the spot where Micah was standing.

There was no dramatic moment of clarity. No elegant thought process. Just pure animal survival instinct slamming the panic button so hard that his brain nearly short-circuited.

He threw himself sideways. The Shadow Step Boots fired on pure reflex, the thrusters burning at maximum capacity. His body twisted to the left so fast his neck cracked from the whiplash.

The fist missed him by inches. It hit the floor instead.

The sound was absolutely catastrophic. It was an explosion. Micah felt it in his organs before he even heard it with his ears.

The reinforced concrete floor disintegrated. A crater three meters wide and half a meter deep blew outward from the impact point.

This was military-grade concrete, the kind that was designed to withstand bombs.

A missed punch from an angry Ape turned it to powder.

Chunks of debris the size of Micah’s head shot through. Server racks toppled like dominoes, crashing into each other in a cascade of sparks and broken metal.

The energy conduits along the floor snapped and whipped around wildly, spraying blue electricity across the vault.

A shockwave of dust and concrete slammed into Micah’s back. It hit him like a wall, knocking him forward onto his hands and knees. Small stones peppered his legs and back, stinging through his clothes.

He hit the ground in a shoulder roll, absorbed the impact the best he could, and came up in a crouch. His knife was already in his hand. His eyes were mbjennjjmncwide .

"One hit. Just one hit from that thing and I’m nothing but a smear on the floor."

The dust settled slowly. Through the grey cloud, Micah could see the Stone-Ape straightening up.

It pulled its fist out of the crater with a grinding sound. Bits of concrete fell off its arm and dropped back to the ground.

The red veins across its body pulsed brighter. Its optical sensors tracked Micah’s new position with mechanical precision.

There was no anger in the way it moved.

It didn’t beat its chest like a real gorilla would. It simply adjusted its footing , then lowered its center of gravity, and prepared to strike again.

Micah’s grip on his knife tightened, but the blade felt completely useless in his hand. It was like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

The construct took one step forward. Then another step.

"What do we say to the god of death?? Not today!"
