The shelter was quiet.
The stream was off.
Somewhere in the distance, the Fracture hummed with its usual chorus of distant screeches, but here, in the collapsed office building they’d claimed as camp, there was only the soft sound of breathing.
Emma was beside him.
She’d pulled a crate over as, a makeshift chair, but somewhere in the night she’d slumped Theward, her upper body sprawled across the edge of his bedroll, her head resting on her folded arms.
One haThisas still loosely, wrapped around his wrist, like she’d been checking his pulse when sleep finally claimed her.
Lume was curled in the hollow of Emma’s neck, dim and still, the fairy’s glow reduced to a faint ember.
Dom’s chest ached.
A warmth that pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat, slow and ancient, like a second pulse layered beneath his own.
He reached up and touched his sternum.
The mark was still there.
Smooth.
Warm.
Alive.
He just lay there for a while, staring at the cracked ceiling, feeling the weight of the Queen’s claim pressing against his chest, and tried to figure out what the hell he was supposed to do next.
An hour later, he sat up carefully and pulled out his phone.
The chat was still spiraling.
The clip of him screaming had passed two million views.
His DMs were a warzone.
Lucy had sent forty-seven texts.
The most recent one read: “If you’re dead, I’m going to kill you myself”
He typed back: “I’m alive, I’ll stream soon.”
Lucy’s response was instant: “OMG YOU’RE ALIVE! THANK GOODNESS”
Dom took a breath.
Then he activated the system’s broadcast.
[BROADCAST INITIATED!!]
[streaming live to: TikTok, YouTube, Twitch]
[current viewers: 12,000… 28,000… 45,000…]
The chat materialized in his vision, and the flood of messages was immediate, hundreds of people typing at once, each one asking some variation of the same question.
MomsCreditCard: IS HE ALIVE
BussyBlaster9000: HE’S STREAMING.
HE’S ALIVE.
HOLY SHIT.
xXDungeonDaddyXx: CATBOY LIVES
GoblinSlayer69: That scream still haunts me, ngl
Dom let the chaos build.
Then, flat and exhausted, he gave the people what they wanted.
“Can I get a purr in the chat?”
The chat erupted.
Despite everything, the terror, the scream, the mark, the hours of uncertainty, the purrs came flooding in like a dam breaking.
Hundreds of them.
Cat emojis and “PURRRRR” messages stacked so fast the overlay blurred.
It was absurd.
It was ridiculous.
It was exactly what he needed.
BussyBlaster9000: PURRRRRRRRRRRRRR xXDungeonDaddyXx: PURRRRRRRRR 😻😻😻
GoblinSlayer69: PURR PURR PURR PURR
MomsCreditCard: 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱
PixelSlvt: HE’S ALIVE AND HE STILL DID THE PURR
OhNoRatio: PURRRRRRR
SaltySupp0rt: the ritual continues even after death.
respect.
KravenMoHead34: THE PURRS OF THE DAMNED
CertifiedFloorTank: this man nearly died and he still opened with the bit.
StinkyRiftDiver: nya~ 🐱
Dom watched the cascade with the expression of a man who had created a monster and was now being devoured by it.
“Good purrs. Solid enthusiasm. Now let’s address the obvious.”
He shifted on the bedroll, wincing as his ribs protested.
“I’m alive. Yes, everything that happened did happen. The Queen is real. The cathedral was real. I’m still in one piece, mostly. Some aches, some bruising, but I’m functional. We’re going to keep moving tomorrow and get out of this place.”
CertifiedFloorTank: glad you’re alive, man
ActuallyADruid: “mostly functional” is a solid state after facing a Queen
MomsCreditCard: we were so worried
[donation received: $50 — “WE THOUGHT YOU DIED”]
[donation received: $25 — “FOR MEDICAL BILLS”]
[donation received: $100 — “GLAD YOU’RE ALIVE, CATBOY”]
The donations kept coming.
Dom watched them scroll past with an expression that was somewhere between gratitude and exhaustion.
“Thanks. I appreciate it. I’ll use it for more potions, since I keep getting thrown into walls.”
PixelSlvt: @Dom show us the mark!
Is it still there?
Dom hesitated.
Then he pulled down the collar of his jacket, revealing the pale, luminescent mark on his sternum.
It pulsed once, soft and golden, matching the rhythm of his heartbeat.
The chat went feral.
GoblinSlayer69: YOOO IT’S REAL
MomsCreditCard: It’s glowing.
IT’S GLOWING.
ActuallyADruid: That’s not a scar.
That’s an active magical brand.
What did the Queen DO to him?
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.” Dom covered the mark again, and his gaze drifted to the small golden icon still pulsing in the corner of his vision.
“The system’s got something pending. It’s been waiting since I woke up. Might be related.”
KravenMoHead34: open it!!
OhNoRatio: PENDING SYSTEM NOTIFICATION THIS IS THE LORE DROP
The icon pulsed, patient and insistent.
“Fine. Let’s see what the system wants.”
He tapp ed the notification.
A dropdown materialized in front of him—not a simple text box, but a full status screen expansion.
His stats.
His skills.
His titles.
The interface glowed bright for a moment, recalibrating, and then a new line appeared at the top of the status screen, highlighted in gold.
Title Acquired: Queen’s Mate
Beneath it, a cascade of smaller text:
Effects:
· +25% Agility (Permanent)
· +8% Perception (Permanent)
· Railweaver Drones will not attack the holder unless provoked.
· The Queen always knows where the holder is.
Dom blinked.
Then, before his brain could catch up with his mouth, he read it aloud.
“I got a new title.”
BussyBlaster9000: WHAT IS IT
“Queen’s Mate. It comes with stat boosts. Agility and Perception. And…” He paused, reading the last line again.
“Railweaver Drones won’t attack me unless provoked.”
The chat exploded.
BussyBlaster9000: QUEEN’S WHAT???????
xXDungeonDaddyXx: THE TITLE CONFIRMED IT
GoblinSlayer69: HE’S LEGALLY THE QUEEN’S MATE NOW.
THOSE ARE THE RULES.
MomsCreditCard: THE QUEEN CHOSE HIM
PixelSlvt: ✨ QUEEN’S MATE ✨ CANON ✨
OhNoRatio: I’VE NEVER SEEN A MORE RELUCTANT PROTAGONIST IN MY LIFE
CertifiedFloorTank: This man cannot catch a break
SaltySupp0rt: The Queen looked at a catboy and said, “mine.” That’s the entire story.
F2P_And_Proud: “Queen’s Mate” is about to be the top trend on every platform
Dom stared at the chat.
Then at the system notification.
Then at the ceiling.
“So I’m stronger now,” Dom said slowly, “but the Queen can find me anywhere. Great. Fantastic. That’s a completely fair trade.”
BussyBlaster9000: the Queen said “mine” and gave him buffs
SaltySupp0rt: @BussyBlaster9000 she’s investing in her mate
F2P_And_Proud: catboy got a sugar mama spider queen
MomsCreditCard: @F2P_And_Proud I’m SCREAMING
“I need to rest,” Dom said.
“I’m going to turn off the stream now. Please don’t do anything weird.”
BussyBlaster9000: TOO LATE.
THE MEMES ARE ALREADY BEING MADE.
GoblinSlayer69: QUEEN’S MATE ERA BEGINS
“Noted. Stream’s over. Go touch grass.”
[broadcast terminated]
Emma stirred a few minutes later, blinking blearily.
Her hand was still on Dom’s wrist.
She looked up at him, and her eyes went wide with relief.
“You’re alive.”
“Still alive.”
“I heard you talking. I was half asle,ep, but I heard your voice.” She paused, her brow furrowing.
“You said something about a title.” She blushed.
“Did I dream that, or did you say you’re the Queen’s… mate?”
Dom closed his eyes for a moment.
He’d been hoping to put off this conversation.
“It’s real. The mark triggered it.”
Emma’s blush deepened.
“I wasn’t—I didn’t mean—”
“It’s fine.” Dom shifted, wincing as his ribs protested.
“How long was I out?”
“About six hours. The stream ran for another hour after you collapsed. I didn’t know how to turn it off.” She paused, her eyes still on his.
“The package is safe. I kept it in my inventory the whole time.”
“Good.”
“Lume stayed on watch. Just in case anything came back.” A small, tired smile.
“She was very determined.”
Dom looked at the fairy, still curled in Emma’s lap, dim but alert.
“Lume fought off scavengers?”
“She didn’t have to. Nothing came back. But she was ready to.” Emma’s voice was quiet.
“So was I.”
Dom stared at her.
She held his gaze for a long moment, then looked away, her cheeks pink.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“For what?”
“For not being faster. For not getting to you before the Queen—” Her voice cracked.
“For letting her hurt you.”
“You didn’t let her do anything.” Dom sat up slowly, ignoring the ache in his chest.
“You came back. You drove her off. You dragged me out. That’s more than enough.”
“You could have died.”
“I didn’t.”
Emma’s eyes glistened.
“I keep thinking about it. What would have happened if I’d run when you told me to?”
“You’d have survived.”
“I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself.” She met his eyes, her voice barely a whisper.
Swallowed.
“The first person who’s ever treated me like I matter.”
Dom didn’t know what to say to that.
He just sat there, the mark pulsing on his chest, the weight of her words settling between them.
“I’ll kill her,” Emma said quietly.
“If she tries to take you again. I’ll kill her.”
“Emma—”
“I know I’m not strong. But Lume can blind her, and I can—I can—” Her voice broke.
“I can try.”
Dom reached out and put his hand on her shoulder.
She flinched, then relaxed into the touch, her breath coming in short, shaky bursts.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said.
“As much as it would be interesting to see you fight I advice against it.”
A long silence.
Then Emma looked at him, her pale green eyes red-rimmed but steady.
“What did she do to you?”
Dom pulled back the collar of his jacket.
The mark pulsed once, golden and warm.
Emma leaned closer, her fingers hovering over it.
“It’s warm,” she whispered.
“It’s like it’s alive.”
“I think it is.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Not exactly.”
Emma’s jaw tightened.
“We’ll figure out how to remove it.”
“Maybe.”
“We will.” She said it with such conviction that Dom almost believed her.
They shared a meal in silence after that.
The ration bars were tasteless.
When they were done, Emma checked his wounds with practiced efficiency, her Mending Touch was warm and steady, knitting the worst of the damage.
“Your body’s healing faster than normal,” she said quietly.
“It’s a little weird.”
“It’s a lot weird, but never mind that.” Dom pulled his jacket back on and stood, testing his weight.
His legs held.
“We should sleep. We’re moving at dawn.”
Emma nodded, then glanced around the shelter.
“There’s… a problem.”
“What?”
“The other bedroll.” She pointed to the corner, where the second bedroll lay in a heap of torn fabric and dried slime.
Dom stared at the ruined bedroll.
Then at Emma.
Then at the single remaining bedroll spread out on the floor.
“Right.”
“I can sleep on the floor,” Emma said quickly.
“I don’t mind. It’s fine. I’ve slept on worse.”
“Don’t be stupid.” Dom pulled back the edge of the bedroll.
“We’ll share. It’s big enough for two.”
Emma’s face went crimson.
“I don’t—that’s not—I mean—”
“You saved my life. I’m not making you sleep on concrete.” He lay down on one side of the bedroll and closed his eyes.
“Get some rest, Emma.”
A long, agonizing silence.
Then the sound of her lying down beside him, careful and tentative, leaving as much space between them as the narrow bedroll would allow.
Lume settled somewhere near their feet, her glow dimming to a faint, warm glow.
“Goodnight,” Emma whispered.
“Goodnight.”
Her body shifted closer.
Dom froze.
His body, apparently, had decided this was an excellent time to betray him.
Absolutely not.
He stared at the ceiling.
She saved my life.
Another shift.
This is not happening.
He closed his eyes.
I am a respectable man.
His body disagreed.
The semi-erection was a betrayal of the highest order.
He held his breath, willing his body to calm down.
It didn’t work.
Her warmth seeped through the thin fabric of her clothes, and every small shift she made sent fresh waves of awareness through him.
He should move.
He should roll over.
He should do literally anything other than lie here like a creep while she slept.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered to no one.
Then, impossibly, she murmured back.
“…if it’s you… I don’t mind…”
Dom froze.
“What?”
A long pause.
Then, in a voice barely above a breath: “Nothing. Goodnight.”
Dom lay there, staring at the ceiling, his heart pounding, the mark pulsing, and the soft weight of Emma pressed against him.
He didn’t sleep for a long, long time.
