The Galactic Republic was a monolithic entity, ruling tens of thousands of star systems for over twenty-five thousand years.
Since its inception, the realm had been governed through the delicate balance of the Galactic Senate and the Jedi Order.
On the fifteenth day of the fourth month, 35 BBY.
Coruscant.
The capital of the Galactic Republic, and the most heavily developed, dazzlingly prosperous ecumenopolis in the known galaxy.
The Jedi Temple stood as a marvel of architecture, matching the grandeur of the Senate building itself.
Rising over a thousand meters into the sky, five massive spires towered above the primary pyramidal structure, a permanent silhouette symbolizing the supreme authority of the guardians of peace -the Jedi Order.
Inside one of the high spires, an elderly man in his seventies stood with an air of refined nobility.
His hair and beard were stark white, yet his posture remained impeccably sharp and commanding.
“Master Yoda,” Count Dooku reported, his tone meticulously detached.
“Senator Palpatine has agreed to rally support within the Senate.
He is pushing a motion for the Judicial Fleet to deploy immediate reinforcements to break the pirate blockade around Niele.”
Standing by the massive panoramic window with his back to the room was a small, green figure.
Barely a meter tall, with long, tapered ears and a weathered, ancient frame, the old grand master leaned heavily on his gimer stick, looking out over the endless traffic lanes of Coruscant.
Master Yoda, the venerable leader of the Jedi High Council.
Hearing the report, he did not turn around.
He simply gave a slow nod.
“Appreciated, your effort is, Master Dooku.
Critical, Senator Palpatine’s assistance will be.”
Dooku’s response remained cold.
He gave a sharp nod and turned toward the exit.
As he reached the threshold, he paused, looking back with a look of severe frustration.
“If deploying a fleet to save a planet besieged by common pirates requires personal favors and political maneuvering just to pass a basic vote, then tell me, where is the Republic heading?
And how are the Jedi supposed to maintain their honor in the middle of it?”
Yoda remained perfectly still, staring out into the city.
Only after a long silence did he speak.
“Call me master, you still should.”
Dooku’s jaw tightened.
He turned on his heel, exiting the chamber and slamming the heavy doors shut behind him.
Yoda took a slow, deep breath.
He turned his gaze toward a distant, unmapped sector of the galaxy.
His eyes grew dark and unfathomable, and he gave a quiet, troubled shake of his head.
Outside the council chamber, Dooku marched down the grand corridors of the temple, keeping his fury tightly checkmated.
An incoming master and apprentice pair, dressed in traditional tunics, stepped aside to clear his path.
The master was a tall, long-haired man with a calm demeanor, accompanied by a sharp, clean-cut padawan.
The long-haired Jedi maintained his respectful bow until Dooku vanished around the corner, then guided his young apprentice into the chamber Dooku had just vacated.
“Master Yoda, you summoned me?” Qui-Gon Jinn asked, offering a deep bow to the small Grand Master by the window.
“A tremor in the Force, I have felt,” Yoda said.
Qui-Gon paused, his gaze sharpening instantly.
“Has the dark side manifested once more?”
“The dark side, this is not,” Yoda replied, closing his eyes to search the current of energy.
“A vast chaos, it is.
Obscured, everything becomes.”
“Chaos?
Where?
What could cause such a disturbance?” Qui-Gon asked, his brow furrowing.
“Unclear, the answers remain,” Yoda said, shaking his head.
“Growing stronger, the ripple is.
See it with your own eyes, you must.
Travel to the Moddell sector, Master Qui-Gon.”
Qui-Gon looked at him.
“What exactly am I looking for?”
“Unknown, it is.
May the Force be with you.” Yoda let out a weary sigh, signaling the end of the audience.
“May the Force be with you, Master,” Qui-Gon said, delivering a final bow.
He turned toward the young man at his side.
“Let’s move, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
We set course for the Moddell sector.”
“Yes, Master,” the young padawan replied.
Returning to his private quarters, Master Dooku activated his holocomm.
A flicker of blue light coalesced into the form of a man in his late forties wearing elegant senatorial robes, his hairline slightly receding.
Dooku offered a respectful nod.
“My thanks for your swift intervention, Senator Palpatine.
Without your leverage, the millions of citizens on Niele would have suffered immense casualties under the Biskaran pirates.”
Palpatine offered a warm, reassuring smile.
“It was the least I could do, Master Dooku.
In an era as decadent and gridlocked as ours, it is a profound privilege to know a Jedi Master who possesses the courage to challenge stagnation and act out of pure justice.”
“The system shouldn’t require personal intervention to function,” Dooku said, looking away.
“This matter should have been resolved by standard protocol.”
“The reality of our political landscape is unyielding, and it will not shift through the desires of a few individuals,” Palpatine noted smoothly.
“We must find solace in the victories we can secure.
Other, more severe crises, such as the growing friction between Malastare and the Corporate Alliance, already stretch beyond our immediate reach.”
“You speak the truth, Senator.
This is an institutional rot.
We cannot solve it alone; we require more allies who share our vision.”
Palpatine’s smile widened with subtle satisfaction.
“Precisely.
But I retain absolute faith that so long as we hold true to our convictions, the catalyst for true reformation will inevitably present itself.”
“I hope that day arrives swiftly,” Dooku said, his voice dropping into a cold tone.
“It will.
In due time,” Palpatine murmured.
“On a separate matter, a curious report recently crossed my desk regarding the Moddell sector.”
“The Moddell sector?” Dooku looked puzzled.
“That is an isolated wilderness in the Outer Rim, notorious for anomalous hyperspace anomalies and a massive black hole.
It sits completely outside the Republic’s sphere of influence.
Why would anything occurring there matter to us?”
“Matters of state, perhaps not.
Mere curiosity on my part.
If you could deploy an asset to quietly investigate the territory, I would be immensely grateful,” Palpatine said casually.
“I could assign a few Jedi Knights…
no, disregard that,” Dooku said, immediately dismissing the idea of involving the council.
“I will contract a few reliable bounty hunters directly from my homeworld of Serenno.”
“Your dedication is exemplary, Master Dooku,” Palpatine said, offering a polite bow before severing the transmission.
As the hologram faded, a deep, raspy voice echoed from the shadows behind the senator’s desk.
“The ripple in the Force within the Moddell sector…
why task Dooku with its discovery?”
Palpatine turned around, his warm expression melting into a cold, calculating smile.
“Breaking a beast requires steady conditioning.
The more tasks it executes under your guidance, the more effortlessly it conforms to your demands.
In the end, an assignment becomes an absolute command.”
“Is that your only motive?” the voice from the darkness pressed.
“Of course, my Master,” Palpatine replied, bowing low as he completely masked his true thoughts.
“Excellent.
The friction on Malastare requires a finer touch to reach a boiling point.
Go, and stoke the flames further,” the shadow commanded.
“As you command, my Lord,” Palpatine murmured, his flawless, pristine smile returning to his face as he backed out of the office.
