Pain brought Kai back to consciousness.

He coughed violently, rolling onto his side as seawater spilled from his mouth. His chest burned. Every muscle felt bruised, and when he tried to push himself upright, the world tilted around him.

He waited until the dizziness eased before looking around.Full novel: Stranded on an Island with a 100x Evolution System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He was lying on a beach.

Wreckage stretched along the shoreline: broken planks, torn life jackets, fragments of metal, and suitcases split open by the impact. Farther down the sand, the remains of the Aetheris Dawn rested partly beneath the waves.

Kai stared at them.

He'd survived.

He wasn't sure how.

He touched the back of his head and found a tender lump, but no obvious wound. His shoulder hurt, his knees were scraped, and his throat felt as if he'd swallowed a handful of sand.

At least he was breathing.

He sat still for another minute, trying to gather his thoughts. Then something caught his eye.

A line of pale gold text hovered above a jagged rock nearby.

Weathered Granite Outcrop

Small barnacle colony on the shaded side. Edible, though bitter.

One red rock crab hiding in a crevice. Threat level: negligible.

Kai blinked.

The words remained in place.

He rubbed his eyes, looked away, then looked back. Still there.

“Either I'm hallucinating,” he muttered, “or that concussion came with some interesting extras.”

He approached the rock cautiously. Tiny barnacles covered its shaded face, exactly where the text said they would be. When he peered into a narrow crack, a red crab scuttled deeper into the darkness.

Kai straightened slowly.

A second label appeared over a fallen palm tree.

Fallen Coconut Palm

One intact green coconut beneath the root mass. Approximately 200 ml of drinkable coconut water.

Two edible grubs beneath the loose bark.

His heart began to pound.

He grabbed a sharp fragment of stone and worked at the coconut until the shell cracked. A little clear liquid spilled onto the sand. He lifted the fruit and drank what remained.

It was warm, but sweet enough.

More importantly, it was water.

Kai lowered the coconut and stared at the golden text again.

He'd read enough survival novels to recognize the possibilities. A system. Some kind of ability that revealed information other people couldn't see.

He had no idea why it had appeared or how much it could tell him. But on an island where he didn't know the location, the climate, or even whether anyone would come looking for him, it might be the difference between living and dying.

“Water…”

The weak voice came from behind a piece of driftwood.

Kai turned.

Zara Marlow was propped against the wood, her clothes torn and soaked. Sand clung to her hair, and a dark bruise spread across her ribs. She looked exhausted, frightened, and nothing like the woman who'd spent the afternoon ordering people around.

When she recognized him, relief crossed her face.

“Kai. Thank God. Find me some water. Quickly.”

He stared at her for a moment.

Even now, she'd managed to make it sound like an order.

A golden label appeared beside her.

Zara Marlow — Sales Representative

Condition: Moderate dehydration, bruised ribs, signs of shock.

Immediate threat: Low.

Kai almost laughed. Not because the situation was funny, but because the system had reduced a woman who could ruin his afternoon with a single complaint to a few lines of information.

“Can you stand?” he asked.

Zara tried. Pain forced her back against the driftwood.

“No. Just get me water!”

“I'm looking.”

He turned toward the palm tree. He could have kept the water for himself, and a part of him wanted to. Zara had never shown him much kindness. But leaving her to suffer when he could help wasn't something he wanted to do.

He found another coconut, cracked it open, and drank most of the water himself. His throat was raw, and he didn't know when he'd get another drink.

There was still some left.

He carried it back to Zara.

She reached for it immediately and swallowed too fast, coughing as the liquid went down.

“Slow down,” Kai said.

She ignored him until she had finished.

“Is there more?”

“Probably. But I don't know how much.”

Zara wiped her mouth and looked at him expectantly. “Then go find it.”

Kai stared at her.

“You're welcome.”

Her expression tightened. For a moment, she looked as though she might snap back. Then she glanced at the empty coconut shell and said nothing.

Voices carried from farther down the beach.

“Elara! Over here! Ms. Voss is alive!”

Kai turned toward the sound.

A group of survivors was making its way along the shoreline. Kael was helping Elara Voss over the sand, while Lila Hart followed behind them. There were roughly twenty people in the group, most of them injured, exhausted, or both.

Elara pulled her arm free of Kael's grip and steadied herself. One ankle was swollen, but she straightened her shoulders and surveyed the beach.

“Everyone who can walk, come here,” she called. “We need to count survivors and assess our injuries before we do anything else.”

Her voice was hoarse, yet it carried well enough to bring several people closer.

For the first time since the wave hit, Kai felt a flicker of relief.

There were others alive. Some of them had to know more than he did.

He started toward the group, then stopped.

Above Elara's waterlogged phone, another golden label had appeared.

Kai couldn't make out all the details from where he stood, but one line was unmistakable.

Device condition: Critical damage.

He moved closer.

The rest of the text sharpened into focus.

Emergency communication: No successful transmission detected.

Kai's stomach tightened.

Elara raised her head, preparing to address the survivors.

Kai looked at the dead phone, then at the people gathering around her.

Whatever this system was, it had just given him information that could change everything.

And he wasn't sure he was ready to tell anyone.
