Zora’s hands trembled as she reached for the doorknob of the bedroom, the moans she heard were enough to tell that the two persons in the room were having a blissful time, but she kept telling herself that it was probably coming from the television.

However, those were just wishes; the scene before her was the reality she could not escape.

Her legs stood frozen in place as if she had been struck by lightning.Full novel: Strong holds — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Shona jumped off Viktor’s body.

They had not expected her to walk in at that moment.

She glanced at Zora, a wave of shock shot all over her body.

“Zora, it’s…

it’s not what you think.”

A bitter smile played on Zora’s lips.

It was only on TVs and books that she had seen such scenes of a friend sleeping with her best friend’s fiancé, if anyone had told her that she would experience the same thing in reality, Zora would never have believed it.

“You’re standing naked in front of me, yet you say it’s not what I think.”

Zora’s hand clenched into a tight fist as if it were the only way to stop her from exploding.

“Shona, you’re the last person I’d ever think of not trusting.”

When she said this, Shona tried to grab her hand, but before she could, a loud sound was heard across the room.

“Don’t even dare to touch me, Shona.”

Viktor’s face darkened.

His cold gaze fell on Zora, even a beast wouldn’t look at his enemies the way Viktor did.

“Why did you slap her?

She was doing this for you!

You ungrateful wretch.”

“It’s not her fault that she was helping you do what you couldn’t do!”

Zora had not expected Viktor to yell at her.

She was the angry one.

She was the one who was betrayed by her best friend and fiancé.

How dare Viktor shout at her?

How dare he say Shona did for her what she couldn’t do?

“Viktor?” she called out, just to be sure he was truly the loving fiancé who had never raised his voice at her.

But Viktor did not pay her any attention.

He bent down toward Shona.

She had fallen because of the force of the slap from Zora.

When Viktor saw that Shona’s left cheek was red and swollen, he stood up, and before anyone could react, Zora was pushed out of the room by Viktor.

“Oof!”

Zora cried out as her head hit the door frame.

A little bloodstain appeared on her forehead.

She looked at her once-loving fiancé, her eyes moist, but she held them in.

Zora laughed at her own stupidity, for hoping he would at least show some care or softness after seeing her bleed, but that did not happen, because Viktor was still fierce.

“Get out!!” he said.

Shona, who had been sitting on the floor naked, stood up and rushed toward Viktor when she saw Zora bleeding from the push.

“What is wrong with you?!” she yelled at Viktor.

She didn’t mind that Zora was mad at her.

She looked for a tissue to wipe the blood from Zora’s forehead, but before she could, Zora pushed her away.

Although not with too much force, it was enough to make Shona stagger a little backward.

Viktor quickly rushed to steady her.

When Zora saw his actions toward Shona, if acid had been poured on Zora at that moment she wouldn’t feel the pain, because it was nothing compared to the one in her heart.

She turned slowly and walked out of the room.

Shona tried to follow her but remembered that she was still naked.

“Zora!

Zora!” Shona called out.

But Zora had already left the house, part of her face covered with blood.

In the room, Shona quickly dressed up and was about to leave the apartment.

“Where are you going?” Viktor asked.

Shona glared at him.

“I’m going after my friend, you bastard!”

Viktor stood up and walked toward her.

“You’ve already betrayed her.

What’s the point of acting like a good friend, huh?”

Shona smiled bitterly.

Of course, she knew what she did was unforgivable, but how could she let a friendship that had lasted sixteen years end just like that?

She just couldn’t.

She had not planned on having anything with Viktor, but she didn’t know how to explain things to Zora.

Viktor was not worth the end of her friendship with her best friend.

She looked him up and down, her face twisted like she had just seen a pile of shit.

Not knowing what else to say to him, she walked out of the apartment.

Zora walked into a bar, sat at the counter, and ordered a cocktail.

The bartender looked skeptical.

He said to her, “You have to go to the hospital.”

Zora smiled.

“Don’t worry about my face, it’s just paint.”

The bartender still didn’t believe her.

He didn’t want to give her a drink, but Zora kept insisting it was paint.

“Why don’t you mind your business and just give me the damn drink, I’m paying for it with my money.”

She was already getting annoyed by him.

The bartender shook his head.

“You’re bleeding, but if you insist it’s paint, there’s no problem.

Just…

just show me your ID then I’ll give you a drink.”

Zora quickly opened her purse, she sighed.

“I’m not with it here, but I’m up to twenty, I swear.”

The bartender opened the fridge and poured water into a cup and pushed it to her.

Zora saw that the bartender wasn’t going to serve her, so she stood up and left the bar.

She had really hoped to get a drink so she could clear her mind, but in the end, she couldn’t.

Everything that had happened earlier in Viktor’s apartment kept repeating in her mind.

How could he betray her like that?

Earlier that morning, she went to the office.

It was an event planning and decorating company.

Since she had no university degree, she worked in the decorating department, while those who had degrees were supervisors.

When she got to the company, everyone was acting weird and more careful than usual.

The place was as quiet as a graveyard; you wouldn’t know people were inside.

She walked into her department and met one of her colleagues.

She asked in a whisper,

“What happened?”

The girl with glasses leaned closer to Zora’s ear and whispered back,

“The boss is around, and he’s really angry.”

Zora blinked several times.

She asked again,

“Why is he here all of a sudden?

What happened?”

The girl replied,

“The manager was caught having an affair with the boss’s daughter.

They even planned on getting married.”

Zora shook her head as she bit down on her lips.

The girl continued,

“The manager has been in the waiting room for over an hour.”

Zora sighed heavily and went back to her seat, but her legs weren’t cooperating.

They trembled.

She held the mouse but didn’t know what she was doing.

She stared at the screen, lost.

For several hours, this continued.

She would stand up and pass by the waiting room but couldn’t see what was going on inside.

Hours passed, but Zora was not concentrating on her job.

At about five p.m., the boss’s assistant came out of the waiting room.

He held a microphone connected to speakers in all the departments, and in his left hand was a long piece of paper.

He cleared his throat and said,

“Please listen, everyone.

If you hear your name, do not leave.

Pack your things and wait.

Those whose names are not called can go home.”

He didn’t need to say it, but they all knew it was the last day for those whose names would be called.

He called several names.

Each time he called a name, Zora’s heart dropped.

She kept biting her fingers.

Over fifty names were called, then she heard:

“Zora Anderson.”

Her vision blurred instantly.

She trembled as she packed her things.

When it was done, those whose names were not called went home.

It took several hours to finalize everything, and they received half of their salary.

In conclusion, the manager and everyone under him were fired.

Zora wasn’t ready to break the news to her aunt, so she decided to go to Viktor’s place.

She had planned to go with him to tell her aunt about losing her job, because her aunt liked Viktor, so she wouldn’t be too upset.

However, things took an ugly turn.

Not only did she have to tell her aunt about losing her job, but also about what happened with Viktor and Shona.

She sighed heavily, but the next second, she heard a sharp brake and a honk.

She was standing in the middle of the road.

The driver got out of the car, about to speak, but Zora shouted,

“You bastard!

You wanted to kill me!”

“Everyone wants me dead!

My mum, my boss, my fiancé…

and my fucking best friend!”

At that moment, all the tears she had been holding in came out.

Her legs went weak, her head throbbed, and before anyone could react, Zora collapsed.

The driver stood there, confused.

Another man from the passenger seat came out.

At first, he thought she was seeking attention, but when he got closer, he saw blood on her forehead and injuries on her knees.

They carried her into the car.

People gathered around, some thinking she was being kidnapped, others thinking she was hit.

Inside the car sat a man with an emotionless face.

Zora was placed beside him, already unconscious.

Blood covered part of her face, making it hard to tell if she was beautiful, but her slender legs gave off a soft feminine beauty.

“She must be beautiful,” he thought.

They took her to his private hospital, where doctors attended to her.

The next morning, Zora woke up with a light headache.

The first person she saw was Shona.

She closed her eyes, thinking she was dreaming, then opened them again slowly.

Shona was still there.

She turned and saw her aunt holding a bowl of water and a towel.

“You’re awake,” her aunt said.

Zora nodded.

She didn’t want to worry her aunt, so she didn’t push Shona away.

A few minutes later, her aunt sat beside her.

“What happened to you yesterday?”

Zora and Shona both froze.

Zora looked at Shona.

Shona’s heart raced.

Zora took a deep breath and said,

“I got fired yesterday.”

Shona’s tensed nerves relaxed, then blinked twice, she immediately lifted her head.

“You lost your job?”

Her aunt wasn’t surprised at all, she stayed calm as if she had expected the news.

“I knew,” her aunt said.

“You knew?”

Her aunt nodded.

“I got a call yesterday saying the manager was fired and everyone under him too.

I waited for you, but instead I got a call from the hospital.”

Zora exhaled, at least one thing was settled, but there was still something she couldn’t say.

Her gaze shifted to Shona.

They had been best friends since childhood, Shona understood her look.

The anger, hatred and restraint all in one gaze from Zora.

Guilt stabbed at her heart.

She had done something unforgivable, but she couldn’t explain it.
