Zora ended the call and put the phone back into her pocket.

The house was as quiet as a graveyard.

She looked around to see if she could spot a single soul, no one, not even a maid.Full novel: Strong holds — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The house was quite big, with everything either black, white, or gray.

Her shoulders fell slightly.

She wasn’t sure of what exactly made her sad.

Her eyes fell on the ring on her finger.

She still had not taken it off.

Her eyes stayed on the ring for ten seconds, then the scene of Shona and Viktor appeared in her mind.

A sarcastic smile formed on her lips.

The man she trusted, the friend she took as a sister, both betrayed her without a flinch.

They both acted like nothing ever happened while she… she suffered the betrayal, perhaps it was because they both knew her weakness.

They couldn’t even at least pretend to be sorry… oh she almost forgot, Shona did, while Viktor….

It was good he had started showing who he truly is.

She looked at the ring again, she was too young to get married anyway.

She finally decided to remove it.

She was feeling slightly weak, but she waved it off.

It must be because of what had happened the previous night.

Thinking of the previous night, she shivered slightly and looked toward the entrance of the door.

A tall, huge man with half of his face covered with tattoos approached her.

He had the look of a serial killer, which made her clutch her clothes tightly.

She had already suffered enough.

‘What’s his problem… I told him I don’t know anything and no one sent me.’

She unconsciously took a step backwards, what if he sent this man to take her to that basement again to interrogate her?

The man guessed her thought, it made him feel slightly uncomfortable, however there was nothing he could do, the girl was quite young, no girl would go through what she went through and not be scared, it was a miracle that she’s even alive.

Not like he felt pity on her or perhaps he did… a little bit.

When he got to where she was he stood still, his face emotionless.

“The boss said you should leave.

The driver is waiting for you.”

Zora nodded quickly, but the goosebumps on her skin did not settle.

She stood up but could not feel her legs.

Each time Zora took a step and remembered that the man was at her back, she felt a sudden chill.

When she got outside, she realized that there were more of them outside, some with guns while others stood without weapons. The source of this chapter is g.com.

Or maybe she was wrong.

Maybe they had daggers hidden on their bodies.

One question came to her mind.

‘What was this place?’

That question lingered in her mind, but sincerely speaking, she was not ready to know.

Whatever or whoever these people were had nothing to do with her.

All she wanted was to get out of that place in one piece.

The driver dropped her at the nearest bus stop and Zora got out of the car.

Her body still shivered slightly.

However, she did not go home immediately.

She stood there until the car disappeared.

The possibility of that car following her could not be cancelled.

A few seconds later her phone buzzed.

It was a text from Viktor.

“One week and five days.”

A heavy sigh escaped her chest.

She stroked her hair with her hand.

She needed more part-time jobs.

Shona and she were supposed to meet by one o’clock in the afternoon.

She checked the time on her phone.

It was ten in the morning.

Fatigue settled into her bones, so she decided to go home and take a nap since it was still early, and besides, she needed rest because of her job.

When she got home, she spread herself on the bed and went into a deep sleep.

By twelve forty-five her phone alarm woke her up.

She turned it off but did not get up immediately.

Five minutes later she stood up, combed her hair, and carried her bag to leave the house.

When she got to the cafe, Shona was waiting for her.

Zora entered and saw Shona and another girl seated beside her.

They greeted each other, and the girl who came with Shona spoke first.

“I’m Kiara Math, a friend of Shona’s.”

“My mom owns an event planning company, and many people booked for events this week.”

“This left all our workers busy, so I was talking to Shona about it, and she said her best friend knows how to decorate and had worked in an event planning company.”

Her eyes unconsciously looked at Shona.

Were they still best friends after what happened?

Kiara continued.

“Um… I would love to know if you are interested in working for us for a day.

We will make you the director of the team planning the event on that day.”

Kiara tilted her head to look at Shona.

Shona also chipped in.

“This is a good opportunity to get visibility and connections.”

Of course Zora knew that, but the idea of making her the director of a team she had never worked with before and for a wealthy family banquet was both risky and beneficial.

Because if things went well, many people might want to use her in planning their events, but if things went badly, not only would she have to pay for the losses the company might have, she would also get a stain on her name that might stop her entirely from ever getting a job in event planning.

She sighed heavily.

Everything about this offer screamed red flag, even the timing.

How did they expect her to plan a banquet in three days?

It was ridiculous, but the amount behind it was worth a try.

Zora looked at Kiara and smiled.

She hesitated for some seconds before nodding.

“I’ll do it, but I would only do it if you add an extra five hundred thousand.”

As if Kiara was expecting Zora to give such a condition, she brought out documents from a file.

“There is no problem.

All you have to do is sign here.”

She pointed to a place for Zora to sign.

Zora signed, and so did Kiara.

Kiara then stretched her hand out for a handshake.

After finalizing the deal, they all made their orders.

Kiara sighed inwardly.

This was her only chance to prove to her mom that she was useful.

Living in a family where all her siblings were recognized, she’s the only one no one cares about, her elder sister had planned all of this.

The wretch knew that it wasn’t easy to please the family hosting the banquet, she purposely sent everyone to North City in Red Country so Kiara wouldn’t have anyone to help her.

And even pretended to be helping Kiara prove herself, while secretly hoping for her to fail.

Kiara’s hand tightened around her fork without her realizing it.

‘I’ll prove to her that I’m not useless… that I’m also capable of handling a company even better than she could ever do!’
