Scars and Secrets
The aftermath of Oakenspire was not measured in hours, but in the agonizing rhythm of the healing tents. The air was a stagnant cocktail of antiseptic herbs, charred flesh, and the low, rhythmic chanting of elven restoration magic. It was a place where bodies were repaired, but spirits remained in fragments.
#### The Weight of Survival
The healing sessions did more than close wounds; they stripped away the remaining bravado of the "heroes." As magic knit flesh together, it often left mental scars raw and exposed.
**The Broken Proud:** Dante sat on the edge of a stained cot, staring with hollow eyes at the empty space where his left arm used to be. A phantom itch was driving him to the brink of madness; his ghostly fingers felt as though they were curling into a fist, even though they no longer existed. He, who had bragged most about his "main character" status, now looked diminished and fragile. Taro sat beside him in a silent vigil, his mana for teleportation completely spent. He blamed his own lack of speed, replaying the amputation a thousand times in his head, wondering why he hadn't been a second faster.
**The Guilt-Ridden:** Yuna refused to let the healers tend to her cracked ribs until the common infantrymen had been seen. She sat in a dark corner, her hands trembling with a flickering white heat she couldn't fully suppress. "I should have burned them faster," she whispered to the shadows, her voice a jagged wreck. "If I had been faster, the street wouldn't have collapsed. The families... they wouldn't have been buried."
**The Weak and Complaining:** A group led by Milo and Eren huddled together, distanced from the more severely wounded. Physically scarred but spiritually shattered, they lamented their fate in a constant drone of despair. They cursed the gods who had plucked them from their lives and wept for the lost comforts of their old world—the taste of fast food, the safety of a locked door, and the simple luxury of a soft bed. For them, the adventure had become a never-ending nightmare.
**The Enduring:** Livia and Asha did not rest. They worked alongside the elven healers, their movements mechanical and weary. Livia’s eyes were bloodshot from extreme mana exhaustion, her once-pristine white robes now permanently stained with the lifeblood of strangers. They had finally accepted that there was no "logout" button. They didn't speak of the past; they spoke only of the next bandage, the next prayer, and the desperate necessity of surviving until dawn.
Apart from the noise and grief, the Silent Five—Zeon, Rhys, Kael, Noel, and Silas—rested in the shadows of a collapsed storehouse. They did not lament or cry. Instead, they cleaned their gear with a rhythmic, almost frightening precision. Their philosophy was cold and singular: The war will end because we will end it. We will live another day because we refuse to die.
#### The Noble Revolt
While the common soldiers bled, a different kind of rot festered in the command tents. Prince Edric, humiliated by his "baggage" status, had gathered a circle of disgruntled noble mentors. Beneath silk hangings, they plotted in hushed, treasonous tones. They blamed the Elven Wardens for "leading them into a trap" to weaken human standing. Their plan was treacherous: a tactical "desertion" during the next engagement, sabotaging elven supply lines to force a panicked retreat back to the capital.
The Silent Five were eventually found by Livia and Asha, who were visibly disturbed. They had overheard the whispers while gathering herbs near the noble quarters.
"Tell them," Livia pleaded, her voice shaking as she stood before Zeon. "Please. They’re going to abandon the elves. They’re going to leave us all to die."
"We are not close to them," Asha added, clutching Livia's sleeve. "They won't listen to us. But they fear you. They know what you did in the temple district."
Zeon frowned, his eyes fixed on the whetstone in his hand. "We are not close to them either," he said coldly. "We are students by name only. Politics isn't our trade."
"You are the ones who heard it; you tell them," Noel added from his spot against a crate, his spear within easy reach. He seemed content to let the world burn so long as his immediate circle was safe.
"Look here," Silas suddenly sighed, standing up and dusting off his trousers. He looked at his comrades’ indifferent faces and then at the desperation in the girls' eyes. "We have our own problems, true. But if these idiots desert, the demons get a free path to our backs. We'd be fighting a war on two fronts. If you are that worried... fine, we will accompany you to the Commander."
Zeon, Rhys, Noel, and Kael looked at Silas in genuine surprise. It was rare for their most pragmatic member to volunteer for drama. Despite their internal protests, Silas managed to drag Zeon and Kael toward the Commander's tent, with Livia and Asha following closely behind.
#### A New Breach: Strategic Crossroads
The meeting with Sir Aldric was interrupted before the "Noble Revolt" could be whispered. A scout burst into the tent, his armor covered in the soot of the wasteland.
"Commander! A second breach! Smaller than Oakenspire, but closer—less than ten leagues to our west, near the Blackwood Pass!"
The atmosphere shifted instantly from political tension to tactical dread. Aldric unrolled a fresh map, his calloused finger tracing the narrow bottleneck of the Blackwood Pass.
"If we move toward the new breach, we leave Oakenspire's 1,500 survivors unprotected," Aldric muttered. "If we stay here and wait, the breach grows until it becomes a second Oakenspire, and we are surrounded."
The debate between Aldric, Lyralei, and Tharion was fierce. A retreat was out of the question—it would mean the slaughter of the civilians they had just saved. However, staying still was a slow suicide.
#### The Strategic Plan: The "Split-Arrow" Gambit
- The Anchor: A small contingent of veteran knights and the "Complaining" otherworlders would stay behind. Their job was strictly defensive: fortify Oakenspire’s keep and act as a shield for the survivors.
- The Vanguard: Aldric would lead the main force, including the "Enduring" and "Proud" summoned, to intercept the demonic vanguard before it could stabilize.
- The Shadow Strike: The Silent Five and Lyralei would move ahead of the main army. Their goal: a Surgical Strike. They would bypass the front lines entirely to assassinate the rift-anchor's guardian.
"We don't have the luxury of a slow, cautious march," Aldric growled. He looked up as Zeon, Silas, and Kael entered the circle, followed by Livia and Asha, who were clearly dreading the information they carried. "We hit this breach while it's still 'birthing.' If we fail, we'll be caught between two fires."
Aldric, Lyralei, and Tharion began barking orders to the platoon leaders, Leon’s group, and even the nobles who had joined ostensibly for "experience."
Zeon looked at the map, then at the nobles. The revelation of the revolt was momentarily sidelined by the threat of annihilation, but the secret remained a ticking clock.
"We'll handle the situation as you planned," Zeon said, his voice dropping an octave, cold and final. He glanced briefly at the nobles, his eyes promising a reckoning later. "Just make sure the 'nobles' don't trip over their own capes while we're out there fixing this."
Aldric didn't ask questions. He saw the lethal intent in the boys' eyes and simply nodded. The march to Blackwood Pass was set.
