The Corridor Trap

Surviving as a Dungeon Core

Vhalgor dropped from the ceiling like death itself.

The impact was catastrophic. Eight feet of armored fury crashed into Orion with the force of a collapsing building. The mage's protective barrier shattered like glass, the sound sharp and terrible in the confined space. Bone cracked—ribs, sternum, something vital—and Orion's scream cut off as blood erupted from his mouth.

"AMBUSH!" Kaia's voice cracked through the chaos. "Above! Level 10 Dark—"

Vhalgor's clawed gauntlet swept sideways, catching her mid-sentence. She threw herself backward, fire magic already igniting in her palms, but the strike grazed her shoulder. Armor tore. Blood sprayed across ancient stone.

"Formation delta!" Theron's command cut through the panic with veteran discipline. His sword was already moving, Sword Qi blazing along the blade as he pivoted toward Vhalgor. "Rowan, shield wall! Cedric, get Orion up! Kaia, suppressing fire—now!"

But Rod was already three moves ahead.

Trigger sequence seven, he commanded, and the dungeon itself became his weapon.

The floor beneath Cedric's feet gave way with a grinding shriek of stone. The priest's eyes went wide as the trap door opened, ancient mechanisms Rod had positioned with surgical precision. Cedric dropped six feet into a pit lined with iron spikes, his healing staff clattering away into darkness.

"Cedric!" Rowan started to turn—

"Eyes forward!" Theron barked, but his voice carried an edge Rod had never heard before. Fear, bleeding through iron discipline.

Good, Rod thought. Now you understand.

Vhalgor moved with terrifying intelligence, not charging blindly but circling, forcing the party to split their attention. His dark purple armor seemed to drink the torchlight, making him harder to track in the flickering shadows.

"He's too fast!" Kaia unleashed a torrent of flame, the corridor erupting in orange brilliance. The fire washed over Vhalgor, but he simply walked through it, dark energy pulsing around him like a shield. "My magic—it's not working!"

"Dark resistance," Theron said, his tactical mind processing even as he engaged. His blade met Vhalgor's claws in a shower of sparks. "He's built to counter magic. Rowan, physical damage—flank left!"

Impressive, Vhalgor's consciousness touched Rod's. He adapts quickly.

Then we adapt faster, Rod responded. Wall collapse, section three. Separate Theron from the others.

The corridor wall exploded inward with a deafening crack. Ancient stone blocks, each weighing hundreds of pounds, crashed down between Theron and his party. Dust billowed through the passage, turning the air into a choking fog.

"Guild Master!" Rowan's shout was muffled by the barrier of rubble.

"Hold position!" Theron's voice came from the other side, steady despite everything. "Regroup and—"

Vhalgor struck.

Without Theron's protection, the remaining veterans were exposed. Vhalgor's claws raked across Rowan's shield with enough force to dent the steel, driving the paladin backward. The follow-up strike came low, impossibly fast, catching Rowan's leg below the knee guard.

The paladin's scream was raw and immediate. He collapsed, blood pooling beneath him, his shield arm trembling as he tried to maintain defense.

"Rowan!" Kaia's voice cracked with genuine terror now, the professional composure shattering. "Oh gods, Rowan—"

"I'm fine," Rowan gasped, but his face was sheet-white. "I'm—I can still—"

He couldn't. They both knew it.

Master, Vhalgor's consciousness pulsed with dark satisfaction. The mage is preparing a desperate gambit. Large-scale fire magic. She means to bring down the corridor.

Rod's awareness swept across Kaia's position. She was chanting, her hands weaving complex patterns, sweat streaming down her face. The temperature in the corridor was rising, the air itself beginning to shimmer.

She'll kill herself and Rowan if she does that, Rod observed.

She knows, Vhalgor replied. But she'll take me with her. And buy time for the Guild Master to escape.

For a heartbeat, Rod felt something almost like respect. These weren't the naive adventurers from Magnus's party. These were professionals who understood sacrifice. Who would die to complete the mission.

Don't let her finish the spell, Rod commanded. But make it look like you're going for Rowan first. Bait her into committing.

Vhalgor shifted his stance, turning toward the wounded paladin. Rowan raised his shield with shaking arms, his jaw set with desperate courage.

"No!" Kaia's chant accelerated, the spell nearly complete. "Get away from him, you—"

Vhalgor moved.

But not toward Rowan.

The Ashen Spellfang crossed the distance to Kaia in two explosive strides, his speed shocking even for a Level 10 monster. His clawed hand closed around her throat, lifting her off the ground. The spell collapsed, unfinished magic dissipating in harmless sparks.

"K-Kaia—" Rowan tried to rise, failed, his leg buckling beneath him.

Kaia's eyes met Rowan's. In them, Rod saw the moment she understood. The moment she realized they weren't going to make it out of this corridor.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Vhalgor's claws tightened.

The sound was wet and final.

On the other side of the rubble barrier, Rod felt Theron's presence—the Guild Master was tearing through stone with raw Sword Qi, trying desperately to reach his team. But it was too late. Rod had calculated the timing perfectly.

By the time Theron broke through, two of his veterans would be dead.

And the rest would know true fear.

Rod's consciousness pulsed with cold, predatory satisfaction. The tide had turned. The hunters had become the hunted.

Vhalgor, he commanded, prepare for phase two. When Theron breaks through, we spring the final trap.

As you command, Master.

In the darkness of Corridor C-7, surrounded by blood and broken stone, Rod waited.

The real battle was about to begin.
