Seven days.
In the underworld of espionage, an entire week spent hiding in the same place was almost a death sentence. But deep within the abandoned coal mine, time seemed to move at a different pace, dictated by the rhythmic hum of the diesel generator and the constant dripping of water down the stone walls.
Erik Heller spent hours spreading detailed maps of Berlin and other European capitals across the wooden table, tracing escape routes, contact points with former allies, and the likely hideouts where Marissa Wiegler's special operations division would be setting up camp.
While Erik studied the strategic chessboard, Arthur and Hanna focused on physical preparation and adaptation.
During the first few days of that week, training was intense. Beneath the yellowish glow of improvised lamps, Arthur and Hanna went through hand-to-hand combat sessions and tactical simulations. Every movement was repeated relentlessly, allowing Arthur to sharpen his abilities to their limits, while Hanna tested new angles and redirection techniques she learned from Arthur's versatility.
But the training wasn't only about combat.
Little by little, the outside world began to penetrate Hanna's isolated bubble. Between training sessions, Arthur brought her old books, magazines, and a portable radio that picked up local stations. At night, sitting side by side on the camp beds, Arthur explained simple concepts of civilian life that were mundane to any ordinary teenager but seemed like riddles from another dimension to Hanna: what a normal school was, how friendships without ulterior motives worked, the meaning behind silly jokes, and the value of choosing one's own path instead of following the orders of a secret organization.
Hanna absorbed everything with the same intensity with which she learned guerrilla tactics. At first, her eyes retained their feline suspicion, but as the days passed, her defenses slowly began to crumble.
One night, while Erik slept heavily in a corner of the shelter, the generator's light began to flicker, dimming weakly before stabilizing into a soft amber glow. Hanna sat with her knees drawn against her chest, staring intently at the small screen of an old media player Arthur had repaired for her.
Arthur sat down beside her. The warmth of his body was a constant and comforting presence in the damp cold of the mine.
"Do you still think about Utrax?" Arthur asked quietly, his gentle voice breaking the silence of the shelter.
Hanna slowly turned her head. Her blue eyes, once cold and sharp as desert ice, now reflected an almost imperceptible softness. She shook her head.
"Not in the same way," she replied, her voice low and hoarse. "Before, there was only emptiness and the instinct to survive. Now... it feels like there's something worth staying awake for."
Without saying anything else, Hanna leaned her head against Arthur's shoulder and, timidly, rested her cheek against his arm. It was a simple gesture, but one filled with profound meaning for someone who had never known genuine affection. Arthur responded by wrapping his arms firmly and protectively around her shoulders, catching the scent of dust and pine that always seemed to cling to her.
Watching from a distance, Erik Heller stood with his arms crossed in the shadows near the map table. A deep, resigned sigh escaped his lips. He had spent his entire life raising Hanna to be a cold, untouchable weapon, protecting her from the world. But seeing the girl find warmth and genuine affection in the arms of that former guard made Erik realize that she was no longer merely a survival project; she was finally living.
And for the first time, Erik felt no desire to interfere.
By the end of the week, the flow of signals on the surface indicated that the CIA trackers had lost the exact trail in the forested region, but they were tightening the net around the urban transit routes.
It was time to move.
Arthur rose before dawn, feeling the system's stable and balanced energy pulsing through his mind. The progress of the past few days had solidified his abilities to their peak.

Arthur closed the holographic panel and looked at Hanna, who was already fully geared up, checking the magazine of her weapon with mechanical precision. When she noticed his gaze, she raised her head and gave him a slight, rare half-smile.
The initial truce had transformed into an unbreakable alliance, and the underground shelter was left behind.
The next step in the war against Marissa Wiegler was about to begin.
