Night began to fall over the desert, transforming the horizon into a gradient of dark shades of purple and navy blue. The Phillips family's trailer moved steadily along the cracked asphalt road, swaying gently every few meters.

Inside the cabin, the relaxed atmosphere felt like a fragile oasis surrounded by unseen dangers. Sophie and Hanna remained seated at the side table. Although Hanna wasn't given to long conversations—responding only with monosyllables or short nods—the British teenager's gentle, friendly insistence was slowly breaking through the thick cascade of the girl raised in captivity. Sophie showed photos on her old cell phone of her school in London, of parties, and of places Hanna had never heard of.

Hanna looked at the screen with restrained curiosity, her blue eyes shining in the dim light of the display. It was a distant world, almost another reality, where young people worried about grades, friendships, and boys, instead of survival tactics and poisons.

Across the table, Arthur observed the interaction with an analytical gaze. His heightened perception captured every detail of the environment: the sway of the engine, the rhythm of Hanna's breathing, and, most importantly, the reflection of the trailer's instrument panel.

It was then that a subtle detail caught his attention. The civilian radio Sebastian was using to tune into local frequencies began emitting an abnormal static hiss. It wasn't the usual desert interference. It was a rhythmic pattern of electromagnetic pulses—a short-range frequency sweeper.

The CIA was using cell phone and amateur radio signal trackers in the area.

Arthur discreetly leaned forward, lowering his voice just enough for only Hanna to hear.

"Masked military frequency. They used shortwave scanning on the main highway," Arthur murmured, keeping his face completely neutral so as not to frighten the Phillips.

Hanna stopped immediately. The glint of curiosity in her eyes vanished in a microsecond, replaced by the lethal focus of a predator that detects the scent of a trap in the air. She glanced at the dark window of the trailer. The road behind them was empty at the moment, but Marissa Wiegler's tracking technology meant that the vehicles' time was running out rapidly.

"How much time?" Hanna whispered back, her lips barely moving, her right hand reflexively sliding down to the hem of her jacket where she concealed her makeshift knife.

"Less than ten minutes before they reach this stretch of the route," Arthur replied calmly, assessing the options. If they jumped out there, they would be stranded in the middle of the dark desert. If they stayed, they would put Sophie's family directly in the crossfire of an elite CIA vessel.

Ahead, Sebastian turned slightly toward the back seat, laughing at some joke Klara had told, completely oblivious to the deadly danger following them closely.

“Well, guys, we’ll be at the fishing port in about an hour. I’m dying to have a cold beer and forget about this heat,” said Sebastian, lightly tapping the steering wheel.

Hanna looked at Sebastian, then at Sophie, who smiled at her without noticing the sudden tension that had taken over the blonde girl’s body. For the first time, a silent conflict passed before Hanna’s eyes: the instinct to flee alone to save her own skin versus a hesitation to pay the price of seeing innocents suffer because of her.

Arthur noticed her hesitation. He placed his hand firmly on the table, drawing Hanna’s attention to himself, and said in a firm and confident tone:

“We won’t leave them in the line of fire. When the net closes in, we’ll get off before the checkpoint and lose the pursuers to the other side.”

Hanna stared into Arthur’s eyes for a few moments. There were no empty promises, no heroic speeches. Just the cold logic of someone protecting their partner’s flank. She nodded slowly, accepting the plan. But outside, on the dark dunes to the south, the headlights of two unmarked black vehicles had just cut through the darkness of the night, speeding directly toward the trailer's route.
