Ren stared at the glowing blue box floating in front of his face, the holographic text mocking him with every word.
[CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE AWAKENED THE SUCCUBUS SYSTEM]
He swiped his hand through it. The box flickered and reappeared.
[Initialize System? Y/N]
"Go away," Ren muttered, heart hammering against his ribs. He was nineteen years old, one hundred seventy-five centimeters of mediocre meat, and the lowest-ranked hunter in his guild. E-rank. Weak. Useless. He didn't need some perverted system messing with his head.
The box vanished.
Ren let out a shaky breath and adjusted his worn leather armor. His father was drowning in debt to cover the care of his wife, who lay in a coma in the hospital, working themselves to the bone just to keep a roof over their heads. his younger sister, Sierra, desperately needed textbooks for high school. Ren was supposed to help carry the burden, to be a provider.
He couldn't afford distractions.
The dungeon entrance loomed ahead—a jagged tear in reality that pulsed with violet light. Ren checked his rusty dagger, his only weapon besides a dented shield he'd scavenged from a dead D-ranker. Today was a simple job: clear the first floor of a D-rank dungeon with his party, split the reward, and maybe—just maybe—have enough to pay the electric bill this month.
His party was already inside. Ren hurried to catch up, boots crunching over loose stone.
"Ren! You're late," called out Jenna, the team's C-rank healer. Her disapproving glare said everything. She'd made it clear she didn't want an E-rank deadweight slowing them down.
"Sorry. Got... delayed."
The party leader, a burly B-rank named Marcus, waved him off. "Just stay back and don't get killed. We're moving to the boss room."
They descended deeper into the dungeon, torchlight dancing over ancient carvings that depicted gods Ren didn't recognize. The air grew colder, heavier with mana. Ren's senses sharpened—his one genuine talent was an above-average affinity for detecting mana fluctuations.
Which was why he noticed the trap first.
"Wait!" Ren shouted. "The floor—"
Too late.
The stone beneath them dissolved into swirling purple energy. Ren's stomach lurched as gravity reversed. The dungeon walls blurred into streaks of gray and violet. He heard Jenna scream, Marcus bellow orders, and then—
Silence.
Ren landed hard on cold stone, gasping as the air was knocked from his lungs. He scrambled to his feet, dagger raised, and froze.
This wasn't where he'd fallen.
The room was enormous—easily fifty meters across—dominated by a throne carved from obsidian. And sitting on that throne was something that made Ren's blood run cold.
A Minotaur Lord. Not the regular kind either—this one was armored in plates of black iron, its horns glowing with crimson mana. A boss. And Ren was alone.
No party. No healer. No backup.
Just a nineteen-year-old E-rank hunter with a rusty dagger and a death wish.
The Minotaur Lord rose, its massive muscles rippling as it let out a roar that shook dust from the ceiling. Its eyes locked onto Ren, glowing with malice.
Ren's legs trembled. This was it. This was how he died. Alone in a boss room, his family losing their youngest son, Sierra dropping out of school, his parents buried in grief and debt—
The blue box returned.
[INITIALIZE SUCCUBUS SYSTEM? Y/N]
Ren stared at it. He was going to die if he didn't do something. Anything. Even this.
"Yes."
The box dissolved into golden light that engulfed him. Ren gasped as his body began to change—bones shifting and reforming, muscles reorganizing, skin softening and smoothing. His armor dissolved into something else—dark, form-fitting leather that hugged curves he'd never had.
His chest swelled. His hips widened. His face reshaped itself into something impossibly beautiful, with full lips and high cheekbones and eyes that now glowed with an otherworldly violet light.
When the transformation finished, Ren—or Carmine, as the system now called her—stood over two centimeters taller. Power coursed through her veins, raw and intoxicating. She flexed her new fingers, noting the sharp, obsidian-black claws that extended from them.
[TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE. WELCOME, CARMINE. CURRENT RANK: B. ENJOY.]
A status screen appeared before her, displaying abilities she'd never dreamed of possessing: [LIFE DRAIN], [CHARM AURA], [SHADOW STEP], and more. Each one pulsed with potential.
The Minotaur Lord charged.
Carmine didn't think. She moved.
Her body responded with inhuman grace, sidestepping the massive axe that would have cleaved her in two. Her claws raked across the monster's flank, leaving glowing wounds that oozed black blood. The Minotaur howled in pain and swung again, but Carmine was already behind it, her shadow step ability carrying her through the darkness to emerge behind the beast.
This was easy. Too easy.
She drove her claws into the Minotaur's spine, channeling her dark mana into the attack. The monster shuddered, its movements slowing as Carmine drained its strength. It turned, eyes wide with something like fear, and swung wildly.
Carmine ducked under the blow and drove her claws into its throat.
The Minotaur Lord collapsed, its massive body hitting the stone with a final, earth-shaking thud.
Carmine stood over the corpse, chest heaving, her body covered in black blood that wasn't hers. She felt... stronger. As if the monster's life force had flowed into her, nourishing something deep inside.
[LIFE FORCE ABSORBED: 1,500 POINTS. SYSTEM LEVEL: 1. QUEST COMPLETE: SURVIVE YOUR FIRST BATTLE AS CARMINE. REWARD: 500 GOLD, 1 SKILL POINT.]
Carmine stared at her hands—slender, elegant, deadly. The claws retracted, leaving perfectly manicured fingernails.
She looked down at her transformed body—curves in all the right places, leather armor that left little to the imagination, a face that could bring kings to their knees.
She felt sick.
This was her now. This power. This body. This... thing she'd become. But her family was going to eat tonight. She was going to survive.
She couldn't let anyone see her like this.
"System," she rasped, her voice unexpectedly melodic and smooth. "Cancel transformation."
[DEACTIVATING SUCCUBUS FORM...]
The golden light consumed her again. The intoxicating rush of B-rank power vanished in an instant, replaced by the heavy, aching reality of his original body. Ren collapsed to his hands and knees, gasping for air. The dark leather armor was gone, replaced by his worn, sweat-soaked gear. His chest was flat, his shoulders broad, but he felt hollowed out, entirely defenseless.
He was Ren again. Just Ren. Weak, normal, E-rank Ren.
He wiped a smudge of the monster's blood from his cheek and stood up on trembling legs, preparing for the long walk back to find his party.
How had it come to this? How had a simple E-rank awakening gone so horribly wrong?
It all started on that day..
