Meredith

I stood in front of the full-length mirror and turned slowly, watching the way the champagne silk moved with every slight shift of my body.

The dress had cost more than most people earned in six months and I had chosen it with deliberate care, understated enough to look effortless, expensive enough that anyone with real taste would immediately understand its value.Full novel: Taste Me Daddy — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The diamonds at my ears and throat caught the soft bedroom light each time I moved.

I lifted my hand and watched the bracelet slide along my wrist, heavy, cold and perfect.

Everything about me tonight said the same quiet thing: I am exactly where I belong.

For a long moment I simply looked at myself.

This was what the last year had been for, the slow, public humiliation of watching my previous husband’s fortune collapse.

The careful, pitying smiles at lunches.

The way certain women had spoken to me more gently while clearly enjoying the fall.

All of it had led here, to this dress, this jewelry, this house, and the man waiting downstairs who could open every door that had been slammed shut in my face.

Ethan Westwood was not a romantic decision for me, I had never lied to myself about that, however, he was a strategic one.

A billionaire with the kind of quiet, immovable power that made other men careful in his presence, and marrying him meant permanent security, It meant influence that could not be taken away by bad luck or a failing business.

It meant never again sitting in a restaurant and feeling the weight of other women’s satisfaction at my misfortune.

It meant walking into any room in this city and watching people recalculate their opinion of me within seconds.

I smiled at my reflection, slow and private.

The party outside had been planned with obsessive precision.

I had spent weeks on every detail including having the flowers flown in from the best suppliers, the lighting designed to flatter every angle of the garden, the seating arranged so that the most important names would be seen speaking to me at the right moments, I wanted every woman who had watched me lose everything to look at the champagne, the arrangements, the man on my arm, and understand that Meredith Martin had not only recovered.

She had risen higher than before.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Mrs.

Martin,” the stylist said, “they’re ready for you downstairs.”

I took one last look, adjusted the diamond resting against my throat, and left the room with the silk whispering around my legs.

Soft golden light spilled across the tables.

The floral arrangements stood tall and precise against the darkening sky.

Guests were already beginning to arrive, their voices rising in the polished, careful conversation I had missed more than I ever admitted.

I moved through the early meet-and-greet with practiced warmth, accepting compliments on the dress and the setting, offering the right smiles, making certain every important name received the exact amount of attention required.

The air smelled of expensive perfume and fresh flowers.

Servers moved discreetly between groups with trays of champagne, everything was unfolding according to plan.

It remained perfect until Vanessa Lang found me near the champagne table.

She approached with the particular smile she reserved for moments when she believed she had located a weakness.

It was the same smile she had worn last year when the news of my husband’s financial ruin first began circulating through our circle.

“Meredith,” she said, leaning in to air-kiss both my cheeks.

“You look wonderful.

Really.

It’s remarkable how quickly you’ve managed to get all of this.”

I kept my expression pleasant and open.

“Thank you, Vanessa.

That’s kind of you to say.”

She took a slow sip of her champagne, her eyes never leaving mine.

“I was just saying to Lila earlier… it hasn’t been very long since Richard passed, has it?

And here you are already celebrating an engagement.

Some people might call that impressive, but some others might call it… efficient.”

A few people standing nearby were close enough to catch the tone even if they missed every syllable.

I felt the old heat of humiliation try to rise in my chest, the memory of those months when I had become a story other women told with poorly hidden delight.

The months when invitations had slowed and certain conversations had stopped when I entered a room.

I did not allow any of it to reach my face.

Instead I smiled, slow and deliberate, and tilted my head just slightly as if considering her comment with genuine interest.

“Efficiency is underrated, Vanessa,” I said, my voice light, clear, and perfectly controlled.

“Some of us prefer not to waste time mourning things that are already gone.

Especially when better things are standing right in front of us.” I allowed my gaze to move briefly, meaningfully, toward where Ethan stood in conversation with two of his associates.

The diamonds at my throat caught the light as I turned back to her.

“Wouldn’t you agree that it’s wiser to secure the future instead of clinging to a disappointing past?”

Vanessa’s smile tightened at the edges.

For a second she seemed to search for a reply sharp enough to recover the moment.

I did not give her the chance.

I reached out and adjusted a single flower in the arrangement on the table beside us with calm, unhurried fingers, as if the entire exchange had been nothing more than a polite conversation.

“Do enjoy the evening,” I added, already stepping away.

“I made certain everything would be memorable.”

Then I walked on, the champagne silk moving smoothly around my legs, the weight of the diamonds steady against my skin.

The anger was still present, sharp and familiar beneath the surface, but it remained buried under something far stronger.

Satisfaction.

Tonight the garden, the guests, the champagne, and the future all belonged to me.

And every person present would leave knowing it.
