Gu Beizheng stared at her steadily. He took the wine glass from her hand and drained it in one gulp. “What are you planning to do by getting me drunk? Stage a scene where I lose control and take advantage of you?”
Xu Zhouzhou opened her mouth in shock. Was she being that obvious? Was she exposed so quickly?
“…Comrade Gu, you’re being a bit cynical. I just simply wanted to treat you to a meal.”
Gu Beizheng gave a slight twitch of his lips and nodded. “Alright, then I thank Teacher Xu for her hospitality.” He then picked up his glass. “Drink as you please.”
Xu Zhouzhou picked up her glass, glanced at him, threw her head back, and downed it. “I’ll join you.”
Gu Beizheng raised an eyebrow slightly. Her tolerance wasn’t bad.
They fell silent for a while. Trading glass for glass, nearly half the bottle was soon gone.
Xu Zhouzhou felt her face burning and her head spinning. It seemed the original owner’s body didn’t handle alcohol very well. That was fine; being drunk was fine too. Being tipsy meant being partly sober, and liquid courage would help embolden her. She’d just take it as fueling her nerve.
She looked up at Gu Beizheng. Why didn’t this guy have any reaction? His expression was indifferent, and his face hadn’t flushed in the slightest.
Gu Beizheng met her gaze. “What is it?”
Xu Zhouzhou blinked her eyes, feigning deep intoxication, and gave a silly smile. “Gu Beizheng, have you ever dated anyone?”
Gu Beizheng glanced at her and stood up. “You’re drunk. Let’s call it a night. You should rest early.”
“Don’t go, I’m not drunk.” Xu Zhouzhou stood up abruptly, her body swaying as she stumbled.
“Careful.” Gu Beizheng strode over and reached out to steady her.
Xu Zhouzhou took the opportunity to nestle into Gu Beizheng’s arms. She grabbed his collar, looked up into his eyes, and said softly, “I’m guessing you’ve never dated anyone.”
Gu Beizheng’s eyes flickered, and he asked in a dark, low voice, “Why?”
Xu Zhouzhou pursed her lips, a teasing smile flitting across her mouth. “Because when I kissed you that day, your reaction showed that you’re just a greenhorn too.” After saying this, she giggled.
Gu Beizheng’s face darkened. The woman’s body was pressed tight against him, and when she laughed, a softness vibrated against his chest. His Adam’s apple bobbed. He set her upright and pushed her away slightly to create some distance.
Xu Zhouzhou’s cheeks were flushed crimson. She looked up at Gu Beizheng with wide eyes. “Gu Beizheng, don’t you think I’m pretty good-looking?”
They were pressed so close together; the faint fragrance of the woman, mingled with the scent of alcohol, drifted into his nose and assaulted his brain.
She was more than just “not bad looking.” Gu Beizheng looked down at her. Her bright eyes were watery and hazy with intoxication, and her soft lips were as red as blood, stirring the surging desire within him.
He knew what this woman was up to. After days of erotic dreams, he didn’t deny his body’s desire for her, but he simply refused to be led by the nose by her.
Since meeting her, it seemed he had been constantly tormented by her—she made him annoyed, she made him angry, and even more so, she made him restless. With his lifelong reputation, how could Gu Beizheng let such a little girl do whatever she pleased? Just thinking about it made him feel stifled.
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Gu Beizheng, sometimes I really suspect whether you’re a man. Are you really possessed by the spirit of a celibate saint?” Xu Zhouzhou pouted, looking at him with seductive eyes.
These words successfully ignited a small flame in Gu Beizheng’s heart. Once again, his emotions were easily manipulated by her.
Feeling a sense of defeat, Gu Beizheng angrily gripped Xu Zhouzhou’s waist. “Xu Zhouzhou, do you think that because I’m a soldier, you can act without fear? Do you think I wouldn’t dare to do anything to you?”
Emboldened by the alcohol, Xu Zhouzhou gritted her teeth, wrapped her arms around his neck, and said in a soft, sticky voice, “That’s right. Do you dare?”
Gu Beizheng’s jawline tightened further, and his gaze grew so dark it seemed as if ink were about to drip from it. “So you kept pouring me wine just to make me lose control, to make it a done deal so I’d have no choice but to marry you, is that it?”
Xu Zhouzhou slowly loosened her hold on his neck. Lowering her eyes guiltily, she mumbled vaguely, “I told you, that’s not it.”
Gu Beizheng looked at her darkly, feeling it necessary to warn this woman to face reality and stop playing with fire. “Xu Zhouzhou, if you didn’t understand what I said that day, I’ll say it again…”
“I don’t want to hear it…” Xu Zhouzhou took a step back, interrupting him loudly. Help if you want to help; if you don’t, then don’t. Why preach all these high-minded principles?
Gu Beizheng: “…Xu Zhouzhou?”
“It’s no use yelling at me! I admit it. I just wanted to get you drunk, knock you out, and set you up. So what?” Xu Zhouzhou, flustered and exasperated, stopped hiding it and confessed.
Gu Beizheng scoffed. “Let me tell you something: not just one bottle, even three bottles wouldn’t be enough to put me down.”
Seeing the mockery on his face, Xu Zhouzhou’s dizzy brain spasmed. She glared at him defiantly. “You think I need wine to put you down? I have plenty of other ways.”
“Hah.” Gu Beizheng let out a disdainful laugh.
But then, he suddenly remembered how Xu Zhouzhou had acted at the entrance of the veterinary station that day—she had clearly looked guilty. His mind went boom, and his entire body instantly went cold.
He looked down, his eyes spitting fire as he glared at her. “Xu Zhouzhou? Did you drug me?”
With that, he ran to the door and pounded his chest, intending to stick his fingers down his throat to purge the wine he had drunk.
“You, you, you… stop that! I… I didn’t do it!”
Seeing his desperate reaction, Xu Zhouzhou stomped her foot and told the truth.
Gu Beizheng turned around, his eyes red, looking at her as if he wanted to swallow her whole and skin her alive.
“Really, I didn’t.” Afraid he wouldn’t believe her, Xu Zhouzhou hurriedly explained, “I… I wanted to put it in, but the doctor said that if the dosage wasn’t right, at best it would cause infertility, and at worst… sudden death. So I didn’t dare.”
After saying this, she averted her gaze, hiding from Gu Beizheng’s eyes, which looked ready to devour her.
She was telling the truth. She had originally planned to drug him—opportunity knocks but once, and she wanted to seize the last chance to make it a done deal. But after hesitating for a long time, she still hadn’t dared. Never mind sudden death; even making him infertile would be too cruel.
Gu Beizheng also realized there was no strange sensation in his body. Knowing she wasn’t lying, he let his guard down and slowly let out a breath of relief.
“Xu Zhouzhou, for the sake of your own way out, you really will stop at nothing, won’t you?”
Anger churned in Gu Beizheng’s eyes, yet a smirk of sarcasm played on his lips.
Xu Zhouzhou’s eyes were red as she sniffled.
“But I didn’t do it in the end.” She lifted her eyes and gave him a soft look. “So why are you getting so angry?”
