The betrayal announced itself in the way betrayals always did not as a single catastrophic event but as a series of small, wrong things that accumulated until the pattern became undeniable.

The first wrong thing was a patrol anomaly on the eastern boundary, a rotation that had been tightened in response to Reyna’s intelligence developed a gap on the seventeenth day. Not a large gap. Twenty-two minutes where a specific stretch of the boundary had no eyes on it. Small enough to be a scheduling error. Specific enough to be intentional.

Axel noted it and said nothing.Full novel: The Alpha's Forbidden Bite — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The second wrong thing was an intelligence failure. Reyna had provided specific information about the Hollow’s communication pattern, the signal sequence they used to coordinate the inner patrol rotation. She had verified it twice against independent sources. On the eighteenth day, the pattern changed, which shouldn’t have been possible without internal warning from their side reaching the Hollow’s side.

Axel noted this too and said nothing.

The third wrong thing was a conversation he overheard. Not accidentally, he had exceptional hearing and the packhouse walls were stone and the lower corridor had an acoustic quality that carried sound from the storage room to the main hall with surprising fidelity. He was not eavesdropping. He was walking past.

He stopped walking.

Two voices. One he identified as Russ Yodin, one of the five senior warriors, a man he had known for fifteen years, who had sat at his war room table and received Reyna’s intelligence briefing and nodded in the right places. The other voice he placed after a moment as belonging to a younger warrior named Hesk.

What Russ was saying was not, in isolation, treasonous. It was complaint, the specific, bitter register of a person who had decided the leadership had made a wrong decision and was sharing that view with someone they trusted. The content was about Reyna, about the alliance, about the vampire in the east wing and the Alpha who had put her there.

What pushed it past complaint was the last thing Axel heard before he continued walking. Russ saying, with the specific precision of someone making a plan rather than expressing an opinion: Before the operation.

He walked past.

He went to the training yard and worked the heavy bag for thirty minutes and thought very carefully about what he had heard and what it meant and what the next step was, because the next step required the same precision as everything else.

He went to Reyna at the standard session time, seven in the evening, and closed the war room door and sat down and looked at her.

"Tell me how the Hollow would know if someone from my pack was communicating with them," he said.

She looked at him. Something shifted in her expression the rapid, accurate processing of what the question meant. "What happened?"

"Answer the question first."

She did. She described three possible communication mechanisms the specific ways that information could move from an inside source to the Hollow without leaving a conventional trace. She described the signals she would look for in each case. She described, without being asked, the information categories that would be most damaging if compromised and the patrol pattern change landed at the top of the list.

He told her about the three wrong things.

She listened without interrupting. When he finished she was very still in the specific way that she was still when something had activated her full processing capacity rather than the conversational portion.

"The patrol gap," she said. "Seventeenth day. Specific location?"

He told her.

Her expression did something controlled and compressed. "That’s the approach corridor for the contingency extraction point we built for my position in the operation." She looked at him steadily. "Someone on your team knows the full plan."

"The full plan is only held by the people in this room," he said. "Plus Daren, Petra, Soren, Calla, and Russ."

She was quiet.

"Russ Yodin," he said.

She looked at him with careful attention. "You’re certain."

"Not yet." He kept his voice even. "I have three data points and a fragment of a conversation. I need more before I act on it."

"If you’re right...."

"If I’m right, we have a problem that changes the operation timeline significantly." He looked at the war room map. "And if I’m right, I need to know what the Hollow is offering him. Because people don’t give up pack allegiance for nothing. There’s always a price, and the price tells you how committed they are and what they’re protecting."

Reyna looked at him with the expression she wore when something impressed her and she hadn’t decided whether to say so. "What do you need from me?"

"Your contact inside the clan," he said. "The one who gave you the acquisition list. Can they find out if the Hollow has made recent contact with a pack wolf? Any pack, not specifically mine."

"I can ask." She paused. "It will take twenty-four to forty-eight hours."

"Ask today." He stood. "And Reyna, nobody else knows we’re looking. Not Daren. Not Petra. Nobody until we have something definitive." He met her eyes. "If I’m wrong, a quiet inquiry costs us nothing. If I’m right and the inquiry moves through the wrong channel, it costs us everything."

She held his gaze. "Agreed."

He left the war room and walked back through the packhouse and passed Russ Yodin in the main hall, and he said the ordinary things that an Alpha said to a senior warrior in passing and he watched Russ say the ordinary things back, and the ordinary surface held, and underneath it something significant and terrible was either true or it wasn’t.

He did not sleep that night.

He ran inventory instead, and at the end of the list, this time, instead of her, he found the particular cold weight of a trust that might have been sold to the wrong people, and the even colder weight of what he was going to have to do about it if the forty-eight hours confirmed what the three wrong things suggested.

He ran inventory until dawn.

Then he got up and started the day.
