Valerian caught Elena by the shoulder as the attendants lowered her litter onto the courtyard stones.

She had tried to rise before they set it down; his grip kept her skull from striking the flags.

Across the yard, Marcus knelt beside Tyler under a northern guard’s watch.Full novel: The Alpha’s Regret: Claimed by the Lycan King — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The Alpha clawed at his torn tunic, coughing blood against the stable rails.

Elena’s chest seized with his next ragged breath.

“Do not touch me.” Elena pushed against Valerian’s tunic, but her arms trembled before she could move him.

Three lords watched from the gallery steps.

Cassian would have a clear view of the king holding her upright.

She worked her boots beneath her and pushed again.

“Stand back, Valerian.”

His fingers tightened on her sleeve.

“You took the poison into your own blood.”

“Through my hands.” She straightened as far as she could.

“The basin was poisoned. Seventeen men are steady. Three are still being tended. All twenty were alive when they brought me out.”

Lord Cassian walked down the high stone stairs, flanked by two armed warlords in mail coats.

His heavy gray mantle swept the mud as he came to a halt five paces from her boots.

“Seventeen outriders breathe easily,” Cassian said, taking in her trembling hands.

“Three do not. The healing judgment waits until tomorrow’s second bell, and your ward water smells of kennel poison.”

“Your poison,” Elena said, refusing to drop her gaze.

Cassian did not flinch.

“A wild slander from a woman whose knees cannot hold her weight.”

“She proved the cistern was seeded,” Valerian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, rasping rumble.

“Then let her prove her blood,” Cassian countered.

“The next rite demands the beast. Shift now, Elena Evans, or surrender your claim to sanctuary.”

Elena tried to swallow.

Another spasm stopped her breath halfway in.

She had thought the registry ruling would buy her a night beyond Tyler’s reach.

She wanted that small thing more than another lord calling her royal.

Calling Asteria now might split flesh she had no strength left to mend.

Whether Cassian had arranged the poison or merely found his opportunity, he was standing there waiting for her answer.

“Her healing judgment is still due tomorrow,” Kenneth called.

“You cannot compel another rite now, Lord Cassian. Elena, you may recover before showing the beast. If you choose to call it here, the King stands clear. Sovereign aid voids that showing.”

Valerian stepped away, his boot scraping the flags.

“Do not do this while the fever runs,” he said, low enough for her alone.

“Then I recover.” Elena looked past Cassian to the ward door.

She wanted to turn every face toward Asteria now, before his sneer became their answer.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

“Record that I asked for the time you granted. I show the beast after the healing judgment.”

Kenneth entered her request.

Valerian helped her back onto the litter when she asked; Cassian had to step aside.

In the fever ward the man in the nineteenth bed still lay rigid.

The healer had turned him onto his side and kept a basin beneath his mouth.

The contaminated dose lay in the basin, dark with bile.

An apprentice counted each breath while the healer warmed his limbs with wrapped stones.

No more broth went between his teeth until he could swallow.

Elena watched the other two poisoned men retch, then take small mouthfuls of clean water without coughing.

The healer bound her palms and kept her on the litter beside them.

Near midnight the nineteenth man’s hand moved beneath his blanket.

At the next feeding he swallowed twice, then asked for water. New chapters come out on g.com first.

Elena heard him before she fell asleep.

At second bell the ward attendant counted aloud, touching each cot.

“Twenty.” Kenneth wrote the number, then the judgment: passed, with treatment continuing.

Elena tried to answer and found herself crying into the rough pillowcase.

Seventeen quiet beds had not let her stop listening for the other three.

Later that morning she returned to the ring, able to stand without the King.

The guards watched Kenneth as he motioned Valerian clear.

She measured the last steps and took them herself.

At its edge she turned toward the stables.

Marcus supported Tyler in the slush.

When Elena’s breath caught, Tyler’s shoulders jerked; when she dragged air in, his mouth opened with hers.

Beneath her collarbone, the unfinished tether vibrated.

“Elena,” Tyler choked out, blood spilling over his lower lip.

“Elena, don’t.”

She hated that his voice still carried the familiar cadence of her five years in his kennels.

“Watch me,” she said.

Elena closed her eyes and reached for Asteria.

The white wolf stirred, sick with the contaminated water.

Her muffled roar pressed outward against Elena’s breastbone.

Blackness crowded Elena’s sight; she dug her nails into her palms, held through another spasm and called again.

Pain raked through her.

Skin split along her wrists with a wet snap.

White fur pushed through.

Her shoulders wrenched from their sockets and reformed; her jaw stretched, teeth sharpening while the flags rushed toward her face.

Then paws met stone where her hands had been.

Asteria stood in the court, massive as a frost-bull.

Each step jarred through her weight.

Silver breath clouded before her muzzle, and the warlords on the lower stairs reached for their hilts.

Elena waited for the venom’s burn to ease.

Instead, her left flank tore.

Asteria howled.

No blade had reached her, yet skin split beneath the white coat.

Blood warmed the fur, gleaming with the metallic sheen Elena had seen when her royal strength answered.

The old tether pulled beneath the opening wound.

Across the mud, Tyler screamed.

He fell against Marcus, tearing his shirt away from his left ribs.

A red split opened along the same arc.

Marcus clamped both hands over it and shouted for an apothecary.

The northern sentry ran to the cellar door.

The warlords leaned over the wooden gallery rail, shouting in furious confusion.

Elena wondered how many of them would turn her open wound into an argument before anyone brought a blanket.

“Look at the wound,” Cassian roared, pointing an accusing finger at the bleeding wolf.

“The beast bleeds royal silver, and the Alpha bleeds with her. The bond was never broken.”

Venom and the tearing tether overwhelmed what strength Asteria had left.

Her forelegs buckled.

Bone drew back with another grinding spasm.

The beast’s weight dwindled until Elena lay curled on the stone, unable to hold the change.

An attendant spread a linen shirt over her shoulders.

She pulled it against her chest; blood soaked through at her left side before she could gather the hem over the wound.

She wanted the watching lords to turn away.

None did.

She drew the stained edge higher herself and waited for a judgment she could not stand to hear.

She tried to lift her head.

Her breath caught, and she had to let it fall again.

“She fell,” Cassian proclaimed, stepping into the circle.

“She could not hold the form. Her claim to sanctuary is dead.”

“The beast walked,” Valerian said.

He crossed the boundary line and knelt beside her.

Kenneth raised a hand toward Cassian, but no one moved to stop the king.

“Let me lift your head,” Valerian said close to her ear.

Elena caught his bracer.

“Just my head.” He slid his forearm beneath it, keeping his other hand clear of the bleeding ribs.

She let her weight settle against him.

“Elder Kenneth,” Valerian commanded without looking at Cassian.

“Render the judgment.”

Kenneth wiped ink from his fingers.

“The scripture names two failures, Lord Cassian: the beast turns upon its own blood, or it flees the ring. The white wolf stood, marked its ground and bore the wound. The trial is judged not failed.”

“Not failed is not passed.” Cassian’s boot sent water across the step.

“It preserves her life under parley until the final rite. No blade touches her before the trial of loyalty.”

Elena kept her head on Valerian’s bracer.

Leather pressed against her cheek as she waited for each shallow breath to end before attempting the next.

She remembered making him loosen his hand in the tower.

Now he kept it clear of her wound because she had asked; she let that much of her weight remain with him.

Across the courtyard, an apothecary packed Tyler’s rib wound and bound it while Marcus held him upright.

Only then did two northern guards take his weight and carry him toward the guest passage.

Blood marked the bandage and the stones where he had fallen.

Elena pressed her own soaked shirt against her side.

“Take the girl to the cistern hall.”

Elena opened her eyes against Valerian’s sleeve.

Orin stood in the archway, leaning on his plain black staff.

He passed Cassian without a glance and stopped beside the silver drops congealing on the flags.

“You should have kept her bound, King Valerian.”

“She would not yield to Cassian’s challenge.”

Elena shifted enough to see the keeper past the king’s arm.

“I proved Asteria is no tavern ghost.” The words scraped over her cracked lips.

“You proved the beast.” Orin looked at the cloth against her side.

“You did not finish the release.”

Elena swallowed against the fever in her throat.

“I never accepted. He never bled. We know what he left unfinished.” Elena moved Valerian’s hand away from the cut.

“Why does it open me when I shift? What has Tyler done with the tether?”

“Then the living tether stays,” Orin said.

“Ask Vance why he left it open. I cannot read his intention from your wound. Call the beast while it tears, and you may open yourself again.”
