Selena’s pov
Ian returned, a maid trailing behind him with a trail of food.
She gave me a sour but brief look as if demanding to know what gave me the audacity to casually rest myself on the sette.
Noticing her displeasure I spread myself more comfortably crossing my legs and the gesturing for the food she was holding, by the time she reached me her face was filled with all the blood in her body red with rage that she couldn’t do anything with.
” Thank you,” I greeted her with a syrupy voice, and Her face got more red And it even got worse when I added, you can leave now,”
Her lips twitched.
Slaves were regarded lower than the dirt they walked under, And Since mates were usually amongst the lowest ranks of wolves Slaves were the only people they could stomp on.
Too bad she wasn’t going to get that opportunity now.
But she had not understood yet she looked towards Ian.
“Grand alpha is there anything else you need me to do?” Intentionally ignoring what I had told her earlier.
Without taking his eyes away from me he said to her; “you heard her just now you can leave,”
She was still for a moment too long before snatching the now empty tree away and dashing out like she was being chased by some invisible Force.
By the time she was gone I had to hide my satisfaction with a chuckle.
Yeah look at me an expression that was a mixture of both tiredness and also something else that was almost close enough to fondness
“You can be quite petty when you want to,” he said setting down the folder that he had brought with him to the side.
Something about it smells trouble for me and I kept my eyes locked on it.
“What’s that?”
He didn’t sleep his eyes from the food but responded anyways.
“We’ll talk about it once we’re done eating,” that made it even worse somehow if it was nothing worth while then they wouldn’t be any need for him to postpone the conversation.
Had he moved up the timeline?
The more I thought about it the more I dug my fingers into the fabric of my dress curling it up until I nearly tore through and hard to take a moment to cut myself before I did that.
Each bite from the food while I was still focused on the folder made it absolutely tasteless but I did my best to get a few bites in.
The maid of returned again to collect our used dishes this time she didn’t even have the courage to make eye contact with me she just quickly cleared up the table in front of her and left with the same speed she had done before in half first exit.
But I was barely thinking about that maid anymore.
After her absence there was an uncomfortable silence that followed and seem to overwhelm every inch of the lounge I had to cough to find an excuse to make sound and it was then that Ian folded his fingers and said
“Cassius my brother brought something today,” he finally set the folder in front of me between the two of us, suddenly it felt like it was too hard for me to breath.
I swallowed hard.
Why was I being so nervous about this?
Cassius wouldn’t try to expose me if it would risk taken both of us down at the same time.
But would it really?
He was the ground alpha’s brother and I was merely recognized as nothing more than a slave, a spiteful member of the South.
Between the two of us it was clear which person’s word was going to matter and the other person who was going to be thoroughly ignored.
“It seems you and your brother are closer than I thought,” I said and I couldn’t help the bit of disapproval that came into my voice.
Cassius was trouble, more than that you could smell the inferiority complex that he had against his brother just from standing in the same room with him.
What could possibly be in that folder right now?
Before I could personally inquire Ian pushed the folder over to me.
“I’ve already looked through it myself I want you to also go through and tell me if it’s true ,”
My heart was now beating so fast, was it possible…
No that’s going to be stupid you would be shooting himself in the foot.
there was no reason why he would do that.
And if he did…
If his plan had been exposed and now I was going to be punished for it there was no way that Ian would bother going through all this, you wouldn’t have defended me in front of that chef.
Unless this was all the twisted game.
Only one way to find out.
Carefully I opened the folder as if it was a bomb on the verge of detonating at the slightest trigger.
When I looked into it I almost visibly released a sigh of relief, good there was nothing showing that I had made an agreement with Cassuis.
Though that was not to say that the content of the folder where any more pleasant.
“It seems like this is a detail report on my previous ‘owners'”I said with great distaste in my voice.
The truth was that Ian had only seen a rather soft side of me, for everyone else I had been stubborn, aggressive and intentionally a headache they could not ignore.
What was Cassius planning to do with this?
He said he was going to help me, how was taking me out of Ian’s favor going to help me?
“Ian… I’ve calm down since this times… I no longer behave this way,” that was partially a lie because I would behave exactly that way if I needed to.
“I see,” he said quietly, “… I had no idea you were so young,” he covered his mouth with his hand.
He had probably been young too when he fought in the war.
But he wasn’t judging me…
He actually pitied me.
If only he knew.
