The room was quiet except for the distant wail of emergency sirens bleeding through the city outside.

Somewhere beyond these walls, governments were mobilizing.

Organizations were tearing through mountains of data.Full novel: The Anomaly That Shouldn’t Exist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Entire intelligence networks were desperately trying to identify the unknown monster responsible for erasing an Eclipse Covenant branch from existence.

Meanwhile, Amir lay flat on the bed staring at the ceiling while every muscle in his body reminded him exactly how close he’d come to destroying himself.

“I hate recovery periods.”

[Yet you continue surviving them.]

“That sounded disrespectful.”

[Observational.]

Amir snorted.

Before he could respond, movement beside the bed caught his attention.

Lyra slowly stood and stretched.

She still looked exhausted.

Faint bruises remained visible against her skin despite the healing already taking place.

“I’m going to wash up.”

Amir glanced toward her.

“Try not to lose another fight against a wall.”

Her eyes narrowed immediately.

“You almost died and you’re still annoying.”

“Natural talent.”

A faint blush touched her cheeks before she turned away.

“Idiot.”

The bathroom door closed behind her.

Silence returned.

Amir exhaled.

“Yo, buddy.”

A blue screen flickered into existence.

“You’re late.”

[I apologize.]

“Wow.

An apology.”

[Do not become accustomed to it.]

“Fair enough.”

The System paused.

[The host’s survival was statistically unlikely.]

“Yet here I am.”

[Unfortunately.]

Amir’s eye twitched.

“One day.”

[The probability of that day arriving remains extremely low.]

“Open rewards.”

The screen immediately shifted.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

[QUEST COMPLETED]

Hidden Quest: Survive Branch 7-C

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Amir stared.

Then blinked.

Then frowned.

“…Wait.”

The rewards remained floating before him.

“The potion isn’t for me.”

[Correct.]

“The awakening pill isn’t either.”

[Correct.]

His frown deepened.

“Then why are they here?”

For once, the System didn’t answer immediately.

The blue light flickered softly.

Almost thoughtfully.

[The path ahead of you will be long, Host.]

Amir stayed silent.

[Longer than you currently realize.]

Something about the System’s tone felt different.

Less mechanical.

More distant.

More reflective.

[Power changes people.]

[Not always by choice.]

Amir’s gaze narrowed slightly.

[The stronger an individual becomes, the greater the distance between themselves and those around them.]

The room remained quiet.

[At first the difference is small.]

[Then it grows.]

[You survive battles others cannot.]

[You witness things others never will.]

[You continue moving forward while the people around you struggle merely to keep pace.]

The blue screen dimmed slightly.

[Eventually, many stop trying altogether.]

Amir found himself listening more carefully than he intended.

[The strongest individuals are often admired.]

[Respected.]

[Feared.]

[Envied.]

A pause followed.

[Yet very few are truly understood.]

Something about those words felt unexpectedly heavy.

[Many stand at the peak surrounded by countless people.]

[And still find themselves alone.]

Amir looked away.

For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, he suddenly didn’t want to hear the rest.

The System continued anyway.

[Strength is a gift.]

[Loneliness is often the price demanded in return.]

The room fell silent.

Outside, sirens continued echoing through the city.

Inside, neither of them spoke.

The System’s next words were quieter.

Almost gentle.

[Not every burden is meant to be carried alone.]

Amir blinked.

[There will come a day when your enemies become stronger.]

[The battles become harsher.]

[The road becomes darker.]

[On that day, power alone will not be enough.]

The potion and awakening pill glowed faintly.

[Companions who can walk beside you are far more valuable than additional strength.]

Amir stared at the rewards.

The System continued.

[Some treasures exist to make the host stronger.]

[Others exist to ensure the host does not have to stand alone.]

The room remained silent.

Then the System added one final line.

A simple one.

Yet somehow it carried the most weight.

[Even the strongest person deserves someone they can return to.]

For a moment, Amir didn’t respond.

Then the bathroom door opened.

Steam drifted softly into the room.

The conversation ended.

Amir looked up.

And promptly forgot whatever he had been about to say.

Lyra stepped out drying her damp silver hair with a towel.

She wore an oversized black shirt that hung loosely from her frame.

Tiny droplets of water traced down her neck before disappearing beneath the collar.

For a second, Amir’s brain completely stopped functioning.

Lyra noticed immediately.

“…What?”

Amir looked away.

“Nothing.”

“You were staring.”

“I absolutely was not.”

“You absolutely were.”

“I was looking at the wall.”

“The wall behind me?”

“…Maybe.”

Her lips twitched.

“You’re terrible at lying.”

“I’ve never claimed otherwise.”

The smile threatening to appear on her face only widened.

Unfortunately for Amir, she looked far too pleased with herself.

Then her attention shifted toward the floating rewards.

Her expression immediately became serious.

“What are those?”

Amir hesitated.

As always, he couldn’t explain.

“I can’t tell you where they came from yet.”

Lyra looked at him for a moment before nodding.

She didn’t push.

She never did.

Trust.

A dangerous thing.

A precious thing.

“But…” Amir continued quietly.

“I think they’re for you.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“What?”

Before he could answer, the potion and awakening pill suddenly drifted toward her.

The reaction was immediate.

Silver light erupted from her body.

“Agh—!”

Mana exploded outward violently.

Cracks raced across the floor.

Lyra’s legs gave out instantly.

Amir moved before thinking.

His arms caught her before she hit the ground.

“It hurts—!”

Her fingers clenched desperately into the front of his shirt.

Silver patterns spread beneath her skin like glowing rivers.

The awakening pill dissolved into pure energy.

The potion followed moments later.

Power surged through every mana circuit in her body.

Dark impurities burst from her pores.

The smell hit immediately.

Amir blinked.

“…Okay.”

Another burst.

“…That’s horrifying.”

Lyra groaned.

“Not helping…”

“You look like you’re melting.”

“Amir…”

“Just saying.”

Despite the pain, a weak laugh escaped her.

The sound made him smile despite himself.

Spatial distortion flickered.

The bathroom appeared instantly in a ripple of violet light.

Steam still lingered in the air.

Amir carefully lowered her beside the bath.

Warm water flowed.

The awakening continued.

Minutes passed.

Lyra leaned weakly against him while silver light pulsed beneath her skin.

“It hurts…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Amir gently brushed damp strands of hair from her face.

“I know.”

Her eyes lifted toward him.

Vulnerable.

Exhausted.

Completely unlike the sharp-tongued girl he was used to.

“You stayed.”

The words were quiet.

Almost hesitant.

Amir looked at her.

“Of course I stayed.”

Something softened inside her.

“…You could’ve left.”

“I could’ve.”

A pause.

“But then who’d stop you from drowning in your own bathtub?”

A weak laugh escaped her.

“Idiot.”

“There she is.”

The smile that appeared afterward wasn’t forced.

Wasn’t sarcastic.

It was simply Lyra.

And Amir suddenly found himself staring again.

Unfortunately—

“…What?”

She caught him.

Immediately.

“Nothing.”

“You were doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Looking at me.”

“You were looking at me too.”

“That’s different.”

“How?”

“…It just is.”

Amir rolled his eyes.

Lyra looked away first.

The tips of her ears turning pink.

The awakening finally reached its peak.

Silver light erupted throughout the bathroom.

Mana surged.

The room trembled.

Amir straightened immediately.

“What now?”

The silver light surrounding Lyra condensed into countless particles.

The particles spiraled around her body before converging toward her hands.

Then—

Two daggers appeared.

Elegant.

Deadly.

Beautiful.

Silver-black blades covered in glowing moonlike markings.

The weapons floated beside her naturally.

As though they had always belonged there.

Lyra stared.

The daggers responded instantly.

Turning.

Spinning.

Moving according to her thoughts alone.

“…Soul Weapons.”

Wonder filled her voice.

One dagger spun through the air before tracing a graceful arc around her shoulder.

The second settled beside her hand.

Perfectly synchronized.

Perfectly obedient.

Her eyes widened.

“They accepted me…”

The disbelief in her voice was impossible to miss.

Slowly, excitement replaced it.

Then joy.

Actual joy.

Amir couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen her smile like that.

“What do you think?”

The question came immediately.

Without hesitation.

As though his opinion mattered more than anyone else’s.

Amir looked at the weapons.

Then at her.

“The daggers are incredible.”

Her smile faltered.

“…And?”

Amir blinked.

“And?”

Lyra pointed at herself.

The realization hit instantly.

“Oh.”

A dangerous blush spread across her face.

Amir suddenly felt trapped.

Very trapped.

His eyes met hers.

For a moment neither spoke.

Neither looked away.

The bathroom somehow felt much smaller than before.

Then Amir cleared his throat.

“You look amazing.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Lyra froze.

The blush immediately spread all the way to her ears.

“Oh.”

Unfortunately.

That was the exact same response Amir had internally.

The awkwardness lasted approximately three seconds before Lyra suddenly moved forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Amir froze.

Completely.

Her forehead rested against his chest.

“…Thank you.”

The words were soft.

Honest.

Real.

Slowly, Amir rested a hand against her silver hair.

“…Yeah.”

Neither moved away.

Neither seemed particularly interested in moving away.

The silence that followed felt comfortable.

Warm.

Dangerously easy.

Then Amir suddenly narrowed his eyes.

‘Wait.’

A pause.

‘Where are my rewards?’

The System answered immediately.

[The host has received emotional character development.]

Amir’s eye twitched.

‘That’s not loot.’

[Correction.]

A deliberate pause followed.

[It is significantly rarer.]

‘I swear one day I’ll have my revenge.’

[Current probability of success: 0.03 percent.]

‘Am I really that cooked?’

[Extremely.]

Amir stared at empty space in betrayal.

Across from him, Lyra watched his expression cycle through confusion, outrage, disbelief, and resignation within seconds.

She shook her head.

A fond smile appearing on her lips.

“Idiot.”

Sorry for not uploading yesterday fellas.

I had a bit of a problem, but don’t worry it’s all good.
