The tunnel opened up into a subterranean vault so vast it made the Paris Catacombs look like a cozy wine cellar. High Gothic arches soared into the gloom, dripping with stalactites and pulsating with a sickly, violet resonance field. At the far end sat the Obsidian Altar—a massive sacrificial slab surrounded by floating runic circles and half a dozen robed figures chanting in a dead, teeth-rattling language.
The Grand Arbiters. The secret, self-appointed board of directors for the entire cosmic extermination program. They looked like a cross between a Supreme Court panel and a cult that took Halloween way too seriously, their faces hidden behind gold masks etched with unblinking eyes.
We stepped out of the tunnel shadow, our boots splashing softly against the damp stone floor.
Kyle stopped beside me, casually resting his mag-rifle on his shoulder with a cocky, effortless charm. He leaned down, his breath warm and teasing against my ear as a playful, conspiratorial spark flashed in his eyes. “So, sweetheart. Are we negotiating a severance package, or are we skipping straight to mass murder?”
“Mass murder,” Lyra answered before I could, her golden eyes ablaze with raw, bloodthirsty excitement. She cracked her knuckles, her fierce, feral grin widening into a promise of violence that echoed sharply off the cavern walls. “Corporate restructuring is always a contact sport.”
Kevin stepped up beside them, disdainfully spitting his burnt-out synth-cigar onto the ancient stone. He unslung his heavy mag-cannon with a cold, murderous efficiency, his weather-beaten face hardening into a dark, battle-worn smirk. "I don't do severance," he grunted, a low growl of vengeful satisfaction rumbling in his chest. "I just collect overtime. Shoot the ones in the golden masks first?"
“Anomalies!” the lead Arbiter spat, his voice quivering with a mixture of righteous outrage and sudden, defensive panic beneath his golden visage. He sounded less like a cosmic judge and more like a terrified HOA president losing control. “You have breached the sacred anchor! You are mathematical errors—loose threads in the grand tapestry! We will unwind you!”
The Original Tiara let out a sharp, mocking snort, her expression twisting into sheer contempt as she raised her shotgun with lethal grace. “Save the monologue, gasbag. We’re not loose threads. We’re the scissors.”
The Arbiters raised their hands, and the air ignited. A massive wave of oppressive suppression magic slammed down into the vault, a physical weight designed to crush our souls and boil our blood.
Bad idea.
Driven by a surge of unadulterated fury, my sovereign spiritual manifestation flared instantly, an overwhelming wave of dark pressure rushing outward to meet their spell. The clash was deafening—a sonic boom of energy that shattered the floating runic circles into a million glowing fragments.
“My turn,” I whispered, a dark, wicked smile spreading across my face as pure, unhinged adrenaline sang through my veins.
With a flick of my wrist, I folded space, snatching the lead Arbiter right off the elevated dais and slamming him face-first into the mud at our feet. Before he could scramble up in horror, shadows whipped out from around my boots, binding his limbs like razor-sharp silk as he let out a pathetic, muffled shriek.
Kyle raised his rifle, his eyes gleaming with unholy zeal as he flashed a dazzling, predatory grin. “Shall we dance, executives?”
Kevin let out a booming, chest-pounding laugh, leveling his heavy mag-cannon alongside Lyra as she let out a guttural war cry, surging forward like a freight train of pure kinetic fury.
"Party time," Kevin growled, his grip tightening with ruthless delight as he let loose a high-caliber volley that tore through the altar's defensive wards.
The bloodbath had officially begun.
