The following afternoon arrived sooner than either of us expected.
The last bell echoed through Mirae Academy, and students poured into the hallways with relieved smiles, eager to escape another exhausting day.
Inside Classroom 2-A…
Only one student remained seated.
Takoru lazily spun his pen between his fingers while staring outside the window.
“…Five minutes late.”
He muttered to himself.
“…Guess she changed her mind.”
He stood up, grabbed his bag, and was about to leave—
“Sorry!”
The classroom door suddenly slid open.
Rubi stood there, slightly out of breath.
A few loose strands of hair clung to her face as she tried to catch her breath.
“I…
I had to help Emmi carry some books.”
Takoru quietly looked at her.
“…You’re four minutes and fifty-eight seconds late.”
Rubi blinked.
“…You counted?”
“I was bored.”
She couldn’t help smiling.
“…Sorry.”
He shrugged as if it didn’t matter.
“I wasn’t going anywhere.”
That simple sentence somehow made the classroom feel warmer.
Rubi placed her bag on the desk between them.
“So…”
“Where should we start today?”
Takoru pushed yesterday’s notebook toward her.
“You decide.”
She opened it.
To her surprise…
Every question they had solved yesterday had been rewritten.
Neatly.
Without mistakes.
Her eyes widened.
“…You practiced?”
Takoru scratched the back of his neck.
“…A little.”
“A little?”
“There wasn’t anything interesting on TV.”
She looked at him suspiciously.
“I don’t believe you.”
“…Why?”
“Because these pages took at least an hour.”
He looked away.
“…Maybe.”
A tiny smile appeared on Rubi’s face.
“So Mr.
Ryuzaki actually studies at home.”
“Don’t tell anyone.”
“Why?”
“My reputation will disappear.”
Rubi laughed softly.
“I think your reputation is already changing.”
Takoru raised one eyebrow.
“…Is that a good thing?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Their eyes met for a brief second.
Neither looked away immediately.
Then…
The classroom door suddenly burst open.
“Boss!”
Nesmin almost tripped over his own feet while entering.
“I knew you’d still be here!”
Behind him…
Stevan calmly walked inside carrying two canned drinks.
He looked between Rubi and Takoru.
“…We’re interrupting something?”
Rubi immediately shook her head.
“N-No!”
Nesmin dramatically sighed in relief.
“Good.”
“For a second I thought you two were secretly discussing mathematics.”
Takoru looked at him with a completely straight face.
“We are.”
Silence.
Nesmin blinked once.
Twice.
Then slowly turned toward Stevan.
“…He admitted it.”
Stevan opened one of the drinks.
“I heard.”
“No…”
“You don’t understand.”
“He admitted it himself.”
Takoru sighed.
“…Do you have a reason for being here?”
Nesmin grinned.
“Actually…”
“I came to save Rubi.”
Rubi looked confused.
“…Save me?”
“Yes.”
“From Boss.”
Takoru lazily picked up a rolled worksheet from the desk.
“…Leave.”
Nesmin immediately hid behind Stevan.
“Violence!”
“I was right all along!”
Even Rubi couldn’t stop herself from laughing.
For the first time…
She saw all three boys together.
Nesmin—the loud one.
Stevan—the calm one.
Takoru—the quiet center they naturally revolved around.
Maybe…
This was what friendship looked like for them.
Stevan quietly placed one can on Takoru’s desk.
“You forgot lunch again.”
Takoru looked at the drink.
“…Thanks.”
“No problem.”
There were no dramatic speeches.
No emotional hugs.
Just simple understanding.
Rubi silently watched them.
She suddenly realized something.
Takoru wasn’t alone.
He had people who cared.
They simply expressed it differently.
Before anyone could speak again…
The classroom speaker crackled to life.
“Attention all students.”
“This Friday, Mirae Academy will hold its annual Club & Activity Fair.”
“Attendance is compulsory.”
“Every student must participate in at least one activity.”
The announcement ended.
The room became quiet.
Nesmin’s smile slowly widened.
“…Boss.”
Takoru immediately frowned.
“…No.”
“But I didn’t even say anything.”
“I already know.”
Stevan calmly looked toward the notice board.
“…Looks like this year’s going to be interesting.”
Rubi tilted her head.
“What’s the Club Fair?”
Nesmin’s grin became even bigger.
“Oh…”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
The classroom slowly returned to its usual silence.
Rubi looked between the three boys, curiosity shining in her eyes.
“…So?”
Nesmin grinned mischievously.
“You’ve never experienced Mirae Academy’s Club Fair before.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“It’s my first year here.”
“Oh, then prepare yourself.”
He dramatically spread his arms.
“For absolute chaos.”
Takoru quietly picked up his notebook again.
“…He’s exaggerating.”
“No, I’m not!” Nesmin protested.
“Last year the Basketball Club challenged the Boxing Club.”
“And?”
“The principal almost fainted.”
Even Stevan let out a quiet chuckle.
“It wasn’t that bad.”
“It wasn’t?” Nesmin stared at him.
“Someone broke three classroom windows.”
“They were already cracked.”
“They were not!”
Rubi covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Watching them argue felt strangely comforting.
For the first time…
The intimidating group everyone whispered about looked no different from ordinary teenage boys.
Just a little louder.
“…Anyway,” Nesmin continued, suddenly pointing at Rubi.
“You should definitely join the Art Club.”
Her eyes brightened.
“There is an Art Club?”
“One of the best in the district.”
“They even participate in national exhibitions.”
A small spark lit inside her heart.
She had spent years hiding behind her sketchbook.
Maybe…
This school could finally become the place where she stopped hiding.
“And Boss…”
Nesmin turned dramatically toward Takoru.
“You should finally join something too.”
Takoru didn’t even look up.
“I already belong somewhere.”
“The Motorcycle Club isn’t even an official school club.”
“It doesn’t need to be.”
Stevan quietly added,
“The administration has rejected it four years in a row.”
“They’re afraid.”
Nesmin sighed dramatically.
“They think we’ll turn the school into a racetrack.”
Takoru smirked.
“They’re probably right.”
Rubi blinked.
Takoru looked at her for a moment before answering.
“Yeah.”
“What happened?”
“The proposal was rejected.”
“Every year.”
His voice remained calm.
There wasn’t any anger.
Only quiet acceptance.
Rubi lowered her gaze.
Another dream…
Another blank page.
She suddenly realized how often life had quietly told Takoru “No.”
Mrs.
Sharma entered the classroom just then, carrying another stack of files.
“I’m glad some of you are still here.”
Everyone straightened slightly.
“The Club Fair isn’t just for fun.”
She looked around the room before continuing.
“This year’s activities will count toward your final assessment.”
A wave of shocked whispers spread through the classroom.
“So choose carefully.”
She placed several registration forms on the teacher’s desk.
“You have until Friday to decide.”
As soon as she left…
Nesmin grabbed a form.
“I’m joining Football again.”
Stevan picked another.
“Photography.”
Rubi quietly reached for one.
Her fingers stopped on the words…
Fine Arts Club
A soft smile appeared on her face.
Without hesitation…
She wrote her name.
When she looked up again…
Takoru still hadn’t touched a form.
“Aren’t you choosing anything?” she asked gently.
He looked at the papers.
Then looked away.
“…Doesn’t matter.”
“It does.”
“No.”
“It doesn’t.”
His answer came so quickly…
So automatically…
That Rubi wondered how many times he had convinced himself of those words.
She slowly pushed one empty form toward him.
“You said yesterday…”
“…that studying wasn’t impossible.”
He looked at her.
“And?”
“So maybe…”
“…trying something new isn’t impossible either.”
Silence settled between them.
Takoru stared at the blank registration sheet.
His fingers slowly reached toward it…
Only to stop halfway.
Before he could decide…
The dismissal bell echoed through the building.
Students rushed through the hallway outside.
The peaceful atmosphere disappeared in seconds.
Takoru stood up.
“I’ll think about it.”
He placed the untouched form inside his notebook.
It wasn’t a yes.
But…
For someone who always walked away…
It wasn’t a no either.
Rubi smiled to herself.
Sometimes…
The smallest step forward…
Was still a step.
As they walked out of the classroom together…
Neither of them noticed a pair of students watching from the opposite corridor.
One girl folded her arms.
“So…”
“That’s the transfer student?”
Her friend nodded slowly.
“…Looks like she’s getting awfully close to Ryuzaki.”
The girl’s eyes narrowed.
“I don’t like that.”
Far ahead…
Rubi and Takoru continued walking without realizing…
That not everyone in Mirae Academy was happy to see them growing closer.
And somewhere in the shadows…
A new chapter of their story had quietly begun.
To Be Continued…
Thank you so much for reading Chapter 18!
The story is slowly moving forward, and today we saw another small step in Rubi and Takoru’s journey.
Sometimes, trust isn’t built through grand moments—it grows through simple conversations and quiet understanding.
Now I have a few questions for you: • Do you think Takoru will actually join a school club?
• Which club do you think suits him the most?
• Who do you think were the two students watching Rubi and Takoru from the corridor?
Share your thoughts in the comments.
I always enjoy reading your theories!
