The second examination arrived sooner than anyone wanted.
By Tuesday morning, the excitement that had filled the school corridors had completely disappeared.
Students walked through the gates carrying thick notebooks, their faces filled with determination…
or panic.
Rubi adjusted the strap of her bag as she entered Classroom 2-A.
Almost everyone was already revising.
Emmi was reading her chemistry notes so quickly that she nearly skipped every third line.
“No…
no…
wait…”
She flipped back two pages.
“I already forgot the first chapter.”
Yuri smiled as he closed his own notebook.
“You’ve said that at least ten times this morning.”
“Because it’s true.”
“If chemistry had feelings, it would probably hate me.”
Nesmin walked into the classroom carrying two bottles of water.
“I’ve decided hydration improves intelligence.”
Stevan looked up from his notes.
“Has it worked?”
Nesmin thought seriously for a moment.
“…Ask me after the exam.”
The group laughed.
Even the nervous atmosphere became a little lighter.
Rubi quietly took her seat.
Almost instinctively…
She looked toward the window.
Takoru was already there.
But today…
He wasn’t sleeping.
His notebook lay open in front of him.
Instead of sketching motorcycle parts…
He was actually revising yesterday’s formulas.
His lips moved silently as he read each line.
Rubi couldn’t hide her surprise.
“…You’re studying before class?”
Takoru looked up.
“I forgot one equation yesterday.”
“So I’m making sure I don’t forget another one.”
His answer was simple.
But hearing those words from him felt almost unbelievable.
Before Rubi could respond…
Ms.
Kim entered the classroom.
She looked around with satisfaction.
“I see everyone came prepared today.”
Her eyes briefly met Takoru’s.
She noticed the open notebook.
A faint smile crossed her face, but she didn’t say anything.
Instead, she placed several answer sheets on the teacher’s desk.
“Yesterday’s attendance was excellent.”
“I hope today’s effort matches it.”
The class nodded quietly.
A few minutes later…
The examination papers arrived once again.
The familiar silence returned.
Question papers were placed upside down.
Pens were uncapped.
Hearts beat a little faster.
Ms.
Kim looked at the classroom one final time.
“You may begin.”
Rubi slowly turned over her paper.
Chemistry.
She smiled faintly.
It wasn’t easy…
Around her…
Pens immediately began moving.
She glanced sideways for only a second.
Takoru was already writing.
Not hesitating.
Not staring blankly.
Writing.
Maybe not as quickly as Yuri.
Maybe not as confidently as Rubi.
But far differently than the boy who once left entire pages empty.
For the first time…
Rubi wasn’t hoping that Takoru would pass.
She believed…
That he could.
The classroom remained silent except for the steady scratching of pens.
Every student was completely focused.
The chemistry paper wasn’t impossible, but it demanded careful thinking.
One careless mistake could cost several marks.
Rubi slowly completed the first page before turning to the next.
She reminded herself not to rush.
One answer at a time.
A few desks ahead…
Emmi stared at Question Nine as though it had personally offended her.
She quietly whispered to herself,
“I know this…”
“I definitely know this…”
Then suddenly her face brightened.
“Oh!”
She immediately began writing.
Beside her, Yuri continued answering at his usual calm pace.
He never seemed hurried.
Every line was neat.
Every answer was carefully organized.
Even the invigilator paused for a moment while walking past his desk.
At the back of the classroom…
Nesmin was chewing the end of his pen.
He looked at the ceiling.
Then at the paper.
Then at the ceiling again.
Stevan noticed without lifting his head.
“The answer isn’t on the roof.”
Nesmin sighed dramatically.
“It might be.”
“I’m checking every possibility.”
Without warning, the invigilator stopped beside them.
“Eyes on your own paper.”
“Yes, sir.”
Nesmin immediately lowered his head, making Stevan hide a small smile.
The examination continued peacefully.
Nearly thirty minutes passed.
Rubi reached the final section.
They were application-based questions.
Slightly more difficult.
She carefully read each one before writing.
A few seconds later…
She accidentally looked toward the window seat.
Takoru had paused.
His pencil rested above the paper.
He wasn’t frozen like before.
Instead…
He was quietly thinking.
His eyes moved between the question and the rough work page.
Then…
He wrote another line.
Crossed it out.
Tried again.
Finally…
He underlined the answer.
But he refused to leave it blank.
That alone made Rubi smile.
Sometimes…
Trying was more important than getting everything right.
The classroom clock slowly moved toward the final ten minutes.
The invigilator announced,
“Ten minutes remaining.”
Several students immediately began checking their answers.
Pages turned quickly.
Pens moved faster.
Emmi almost dropped her eraser in panic.
“I forgot to label the diagram!”
She quickly corrected it.
Yuri quietly checked every page one last time.
Stevan had already finished and was patiently reviewing his calculations.
Nesmin looked exhausted.
“I’ve officially used my entire brain.”
No one answered.
Everyone was too busy writing.
The final bell echoed through the classroom.
“Stop writing.”
The invigilator began collecting the answer sheets.
This time…
Takoru didn’t hesitate.
He placed his paper on the pile with calm eyes.
As he leaned back in his chair, he quietly let out a long breath.
“…That was harder than yesterday.”
Rubi nodded.
“But you finished it.”
He looked toward her.
“…Yeah.”
“I finished it.”
There wasn’t any excitement in his voice.
No pride.
Just quiet satisfaction.
And somehow…
That simple feeling was enough.
As the students slowly packed their bags, Ms.
Kim looked around the room.
“I’m proud of all of you.”
“This examination wasn’t easy.”
“But I could see every one of you trying until the very last minute.”
Her eyes briefly rested on Takoru.
He noticed…
But simply gave a small nod.
No words were needed.
Sometimes…
A teacher understood a student’s progress long before the report card did.
Outside the classroom…
The afternoon breeze carried away another day of tension.
Only two examinations remained.
And with each passing day…
The fear inside Classroom 2-A was slowly being replaced by something much stronger.
Confidence.
To Be Continued…
Welcome to Chapter 24!
Today’s chapter wasn’t about getting the highest marks.
It was about something much more important—growth.
Takoru is no longer running away from challenges.
He’s learning to face them, one step at a time, and Rubi is slowly realizing that real change doesn’t happen overnight.
Now I have a few questions for you: • What was your favorite moment in today’s chapter?
• Do you think Takoru is finally starting to believe in himself?
• Which friendship in this story do you enjoy the most—Rubi & Takoru, Yuri & Emmi, or Takoru, Nesmin & Stevan?
I’d love to hear all your opinions and theories in the comments!
See you soon in the next chapter!
