The morning after a storm always brings a different kind of silence.

Sunrise washed over the puddles scattered across Blackstone Estate, turning dew clinging to the grass into thousands of glittering gold crystals.

But inside the ranch’s small clinic, where the air smelled of antiseptic and cedar, the peace didn’t reach.Full novel: THE BILLIONAIRE’S FORBIDDEN JUMP — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The air felt like a minefield, primed and ready to blow.

Alesya was preparing a glass bottle of pure arnica oil and a warm compress when the wooden door creaked open.

Revan walked in.

He’d showered and shaved, but the dark circles beneath his gray eyes betrayed the long night they’d spent together out in the straw.

He wore a thin black cotton shirt, sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

But Alesya noticed it instantly.

The way his left arm hung stiff at his side.

The way he held his breath every time he moved his shoulder more than a few degrees.

“Phantom finished breakfast,” Revan’s voice cut through the quiet.

Low.

Distant.

As if he were desperately trying to rebuild the thick walls between them after everything that happened last night.

“Marcus said his pulse is back to normal.”

Alesya set the oil bottle down on the stainless steel table with a soft clink.

She turned, crossing her arms over her chest, and looked him straight in the eye.

“And yours?” she asked sharply.

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t come here for a medical exam.”

“You came here because you can’t even button the top three buttons of your shirt without wincing in pain.”

Her gaze dropped to his chest.

The top three buttons of Revan’s black shirt were indeed undone, revealing the strong line of his neck and the faint, pale scar peeking out from beneath the fabric.

Revan clenched his jaw so hard the muscle beneath his ear twitched.

“I’m fine.”

“Sit on the exam table, Revan.”

“Alesya…”

“Sit,” she said firmly, her voice calm but carrying an unshakable weight of authority.

“Or I’ll cancel Phantom’s entire evaluation schedule today and tell Marcus that his owner is too proud to admit his tendon is severely inflamed.”

Revan’s gray eyes narrowed, dangerous.

There was a flash of dark anger there—the anger of a man accustomed to giving orders, not taking ultimatums from a woman who only reached his chest.

But beneath that anger, Alesya saw weary resignation.

Without a word, Revan walked across the linoleum floor.

He sat on the edge of the black leather exam table.

“Take off your shirt,” she ordered, stepping closer.

Revan held her gaze for three long seconds.

Then, slowly, he undid the rest of the buttons one by one.

Deliberate.

Careful.

When he pulled the black fabric down off his left shoulder, the air in the clinic suddenly felt thin.

His broad chest was bare under the bright halogen lights.

His solid pecs, the defined line of his ribs, his warm tanned skin all of it filled her vision.

And on his left shoulder…

The skin around the six-inch surgical scar was red and swollen.

The scar tissue was pulled tight, stretched to its limit from bearing Phantom’s weight in the storm last night.

Alesya drew a shaky breath.

She stepped forward, standing right between his spread knees.

It was an unbearably intimate position.

His expensive scent cedarwood, clean skin, and warm male heat wrapped around her instantly, making her heart race.

Alesya poured a few drops of warm arnica oil into her palms, rubbed her hands together until they were warm, then rested her hands gently on his left shoulder.

Hhh.

Revan hissed through clenched teeth as her warm hands touched the inflamed area.

Every muscle in his neck and back went rigid as steel cables.

“Relax,” she whispered, her voice softening without her meaning to.

“If you hold your breath, your supraspinatus muscle will keep pinching the nerve.”

She began to work.

Her thumbs moved in slow, deep, deliberate circles, feeling along the inflamed muscle fibers beneath his skin.

Every time her fingers found a tight knot, Revan let out a stifled groan.

His head bowed forward, his forehead nearly resting against her shoulder.

The scent of her hair lavender and vanilla clouded his senses, making his breathing ragged and heavy.

“You feel it?” she whispered near his ear.

Her index and middle finger pressed into the space between his collarbone and shoulder joint.

“There’s fluid buildup in the subacromial bursa.

Your tendon isn’t torn again, but everything around it is inflamed because you forced it to carry hundreds of pounds last night.”

“I… had no choice,” Revan rasped, his voice breaking under the sharp pain and the burning sensation of her hands on him.

“You always have a choice, Revan,” she said gently, her fingers moving down, tracing the length of the surgical scar from his neck to the top of his deltoid.

“But you always choose to sacrifice yourself first.”

His body trembled faintly at her words.

Revan lifted his head slowly.

His gray eyes, usually so cold and untouchable, shone dark and intense, stripped bare.

Their faces were only inches apart.

Alesya could feel his warm breath fanning her lips every time he exhaled.

She could see the pulse beating wildly in his throat just as wild as her own.

Her medical touch began to soften, losing its clinical edge.

Her hands weren’t just working out tight muscles anymore; her palms brushed over his chest and shoulder with a tenderness heavy with forbidden longing and grief.

Alesya traced the scar on his shoulder.

And then she realized something that shattered her heart:

Revan Caldwell had spent his entire life surrounded by people who only cared about what his body could produce.

His father cared about medals and multimillion-dollar sponsorships.

Victoria cared about social status and the family name.

The federation cared about world rankings.

No one had ever touched this wound simply to heal it, asking for nothing in return.

Alesya’s eyes burned with unshed tears.

“Why didn’t you have your doctors re-operate in Germany?” she whispered, her thumb brushing the hard line of his jaw.

“Because a second surgery means eighteen months of total rest,” Revan answered, his voice rough and heavy, staring straight into her honey-brown eyes.

“And if I was gone that long, my father would sell Phantom to a breeding syndicate in the Middle East.

I can’t let anyone else touch my horse.”

Alesya caught her breath.

Admiration, sorrow, and an undeniable pull all tangled together in her chest, drowning out every last bit of reason.

This man wasn’t a monster.

He was a protector, willing to break himself apart for the things he loved.

Revan’s right hand moved slowly from the edge of the table.

His rough, calloused fingers settled at her slim waist.

Not a rough grip, like before.

Hesitant.

Softer than she’d ever thought him capable of.

As if this powerful man was afraid she might shatter if he held her too tightly.

His thumb brushed her hip through the thin fabric of her shirt, drawing her a fraction closer to his bare chest.

They were nearly touching.

His body heat radiated into her, setting every nerve ending in her skin alight with a deep, ancient hunger she couldn’t fight.

“Alesya,” he whispered brokenly.

His voice shook with raw, exposed desperation.

“Tell me what you’re doing to me,” he murmured, his eyes fixed on her full, slightly parted lips.

“Since the first day you stepped into my arena… I can’t breathe without smelling your damn scent everywhere I go.”

Her heart hammered so hard it hurt.

Her hands on his shoulder tightened, gripping his warm skin.

“I’m not doing anything, Revan,” she breathed, her voice barely more than a sigh between their mingling breaths.

“You’re doing everything,” he countered, pulling her flush against him, no space left between them.

Revan lowered his head slowly.

His lips hovered barely a millimeter above hers.

So close she could feel the vibration of his voice against her skin when he whispered:

“You make me want to jump off a cliff, Alesya.

And for the first time in my life… I don’t care if I hit the bottom.”

Alesya’s eyes fluttered shut.

Every defense she’d built over two years in America crumbled completely.

She didn’t care about the contract anymore.

She didn’t care about the chasm between their worlds.

She just wanted him.

Right now.

Their lips were just about to meet skin to skin, heat to heat when a harsh sound split the silence.

BZZZZT!

BZZZZT!

BZZZZT!

Revan’s phone, lying on the metal table beside them, buzzed violently.

The screen lit up bright, casting cold white light across the room.

A name flashed in bold capital letters:

VICTORIA ASHWORTH

The ringtone blared like a fire alarm in the quiet room.

But Revan didn’t move.

He didn’t glance toward the phone.

His hands at her waist didn’t loosen by a fraction.

His gray eyes stayed locked on her lips, parted and trembling before him.

His breathing was ragged, filled with a fierce, wild refusal to be pulled back into the gilded cage waiting for him.

BZZZZT!

BZZZZT!

The second call came louder.

Insisten

t.

Demanding.

And there, between ragged breaths, with his lips still a hair’s breadth from hers…

Alesya opened her eyes, looked at the man who was seconds away from kissing her, and realized this forbidden kiss was the real cliff.
